Radio Host Calls Rice 'Aunt Jemima'
Fri Nov 19,12:33 AM ET
By JAMES A. CARLSON, Associated
Press Writer
MILWAUKEE - A radio talk show host
drew criticism Thursday after
calling Condoleezza Rice (news - web
sites) an "Aunt Jemima" and saying
she isn't competent to be secretary
of state.
John Sylvester, the program director
and morning personality on WTDY-AM
in Madison, said in a phone
interview Thursday that he used the
term on Wednesday's show to describe
Rice and other blacks as having only
a subservient role in the Bush
administration.
Rice has served as President Bush
(news - web sites)'s national
security adviser and was named this
week to replace the departing Colin
Powell (news - web sites) as
secretary of state.
Sylvester, who is white, also
referred to Powell as an "Uncle Tom"
— a contemptuous term for a black
whose behavior toward whites is
regarded as fawning or servile.
He said Thursday night that he was
referring to remarks by singer and
civil rights activist Harry
Belafonte that the price of
admittance for blacks to the Bush
White House was subservience.
As for Rice, "they're using her for
an illusion of inclusion," he said,
adding that he feels her history as
national security adviser showed a
lack of competence.
Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called
the remarks "racially insensitive,"
while Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio,
voting record), D-Wis., said in a
statement he joined "all
Wisconsinites in rejecting" the
statements.
Linda Hoskins of the NAACP's Madison
branch said she could not comment on
Sylvester's remarks until she had
heard them in their entirety.
The station's corporate office
received about 100 calls about his
comments, Sylvester said.
He added that he has a long history
of commitment to civil rights and
has supported Madison's black
community.
He said he was planning a giveaway
on Friday's show of Aunt Jemima
pancake mix and syrup. "I will
apologize to Aunt Jemima," he said.
The incident came after a radio host
in Milwaukee had his talk show taken
off the air all of last week after
he used word "wetback" to refer to
undocumented Mexican immigrants,
sparking protests from Hispanics.

Associated Press writer JR Ross in
Madison contributed to this story.
If this is the guy from Sly in the Morning here in
Madison then he doesn't deserve the attention.
Pretend the comments and his own existence never
happened.
This guy is a moron. Rice is a very well educated
and from what I understand outspoken person who has
been invaluable as national security advisor. I
don't like what the administration wants to do, but
she is far from an Aunt Jemima.

Some proof, they tagged the wall of my
building..
I see this tag everywhere across Westbury and
Carle Place. Haven't a clue what it means, but
it can't be good.

Cmmon, it's not funny!
It's the sad fact of life here in Nasty
county . The gang tags have been popping up
all over Westbury and Carle Place. Usually they
say SE 516 or MS 13 X3.
People just don't understand that gang activity
is thriving on Long Island. They think it's the
suburbs and they're safe. Walk around my town at
night, you'll see lots of vagrants hanging out
wearing doo rags, sometimes they're blasting rap
music with those thumping speakers. I just saw
one guy flash some sort of sign to
another guy earlier this evening.
I don't see so many ppl like this, even in NYC.
There's less thugs at 179st/Jamaica than here.
A guy was killed in Hempstead not too long ago,
they say he was wearing the wrong color. Then
you had 2 gang murders with bodies dumped in Old
Bethpage and Old Westbury. Then another recent
gang attack in Brentwood.
News 12 has done several "at issue" programs
about the growing gang violence on Long Island.
And Roosevelt Field is still a thug mall, I
don't care what anyone else says. Compared to
Garden State Plaza, Palisades Center,
Willowbrook Mall, Queens Center, etc RF is pretty
thugged out.
It's not Roosevelt Field's fault, they're just
reflecting the changes on Long Island.

The front door to our apartment building is
covered in graffiti. I always know what door it
is as I have memorized the graffiti on there.

Hempstead residents march for an end to gang
violence
(11/19/04) HEMPSTEAD – Hempstead parents and
community leaders took to the streets Friday
with one strong, unified message – stop gang
violence now.
The march is a response to Tuesday’s fatal
stabbing of 17-year-old Olman Herrera and other
instances of gang violence in the Hempstead
area. Although police are not positive the
assault on Herrera is gang related, they have
arrested a member of the gang Salvadorians With
Pride in connection with the attack.
Those present at the march say more needs to be
done to positively influence young adults. They
hope by doing this, teens will not be seducted
by the gang lifestyle.
One member of the Bloods street gang says gang
violence will only be halted if gang members
themselves want the bloodshed stopped. According
to the member, no amount of outside influence
will be able to stop gang-related attacks.
Arrest made in connection with fatal stabbing of
Hempstead High School teen
(11/17/04) HEMPSTEAD - Police arrested a
self-admitted former member of the violent
street gang Salvadorans With Pride (SWP) on
Wednesday in connection with the stabbing death
of a Hempstead High School student. Jack Pineda,
18, of Hempstead has been charged with gang
assault.
The victim's family had suspected gangs were
involved in their son's murder. Cops are still
searching for other suspects including the
killer of 17-year-old Olman Herrera of
Hempstead.
Herrera's mother believes her son (pictured) had
not been attending classes lately because he was
afraid of gang members at his school. Other
Hempstead High School students tell News 12 Long
Island that gangs are a serious problem at their
school.
Police say Herrera was stabbed several times
Tuesday during an altercation with 6-8 other
teens on Linden Avenue, close to the school. He
was taken to Mercy Medical Center and later
died.
Local leaders, residents take a stand in
Uniondale to stop gang violence
(09/24/04) UNIONDALE – Local leaders and
anti-gang activists held a rally Friday in
Uniondale to address the issue of gang violence
on Long Island.
The rally takes place in the aftermath of
several possible gang-related incidents on Long
Island. The violent acts have made some
residents more aware of what anti-gang activists
are calling a growing problem.
Last week, a 16-year-old innocent bystander was
shot in the chest and hospitalized after being
caught in the crossfire of a possible
gang-related attack. Two people affiliated with
the street gang MS-13 have also turned up dead.
The leaders and activists at Friday’s rally say
the community needs to get involved and give
kids an alternative to the gang lifestyle. They
say all communities need to work together and
show solidarity to combat the problem before it
gets worse.
String of violent acts may be sign of escalating
gang war on Long Island
(09/23/04) MINEOLA – Nassau and Suffolk police
departments are investigating the possibility of
an escalating gang war on Long Island.
A recent string of violent incidents has raised
the specter of gang violence in some Long Island
communities. Police are now trying to determine
if the acts are related to each other in any
way. Two people with connections to the gang
MS-13 have been killed during the outbreak,
while one innocent bystander was shot in the
chest and hospitalized after being caught in the
middle an apparent gang-related attack.
Police officials say they are investigating
various scenarios in all of the attacks. Gang
experts, however, say the recent string of
incidents should serve as a wakeup call to
authorities. They say the amount of gang members
on Long Island is increasing and the violence
will only get worse.
Experts say gang violence spreading through
quiet streets of Long Island
(09/30/04) HEMPSTEAD – Police officials and
community advocates say gang activity is
spreading throughout the communities of Long
Island.
According to experts on gang activities, the
proliferation of guns throughout the U.S. is
upping the ante on gang violence. They say what
scores that used to be settled with hand-to-hand
combat are now being resolved with deadly
shootouts.
Both police officials and community advocates
agree that parental and community involvement
are both necessary to curb gang violence on Long
Island.

You think its any different here? Look anywhere.
Almost every apartment building is tagged if you
look closely, sometimes they are in hidden
areas.

Most of that don't look like gang grafitti
though, more like from taggers who just like to
do it. There's a difference between taggers and
gangstas.
As much as I hate graffitti, I have to admit
some of that is artistic.
Most of the grafitti here is merely gang tags,
and is not as elaborate.

I hate tags. Its just an annoying piece of ****
that makes something look ugly and you can't
even read it. I'll try to take some pics of it
around my neighborhood.

Theres plenty of that crap around here.
Actually, it seems like most stuff around here
is covered in tags or graffiti, and while I
think it looks crappy in the suburbs, I actually
think that in the city it's another thing that
adds to the urbanity of the city itself.
Have you guys seen some of the new art up on
that building? Someone painted the fronts of an
R-36 in both its red and white/blue
counterparts, side-by-side. There's also a mural
with Luigi, Donkey Kong, and a mini-Mario. And
there used to be a mural with a bunch of
Transformers in it.
You get great views from of the (7) going
Manhattan-bound.
