Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is the first Argonaut game to come along in awhile. The last Argonaut game I played was FX Fighter on the PC, a so-so 3D fighting game. Of course, Argonaut is still most famous for the original Star Fox on the SNES. Croc has to be one of the top three graphically impressive third party games on the Saturn. Sprites are sparsely used; almost everything is polygonal. Croc also makes good use of gouraud shading and even some lightsourcing. There are some problems, though. Some textures seem too dark (Tomb Raider had a similar problem); this is really out of place in a colorful happy-cutesy game like Croc. Slowdown is a problem as well, in large areas. Croc also manages to capture the same kiddy feeling that Mario does. When you attack you can hear Croc shout, "Ka-zaam! Ka-pow! Ka-boom!" However, your average licensed Acclaim game has more originality than Croc does. Almost everything in Croc is blatantly ripped off from another game. Croc's gem's work like in Sonic the Hedgehog, where if you get hit you loose them (although Croc can only recover six or so gems, regardless of how many you had). And, if you are hit without any gems, you die. The overall feeling is still very Mario-like. Croc's biggest problem is the camera system--it's horrible! You can choose between three camera angles (low, middle, and high). There is also a 'Croc-cam', which lets you look around (more or less). The problem with the Croc-cam is that you have 360o movement horizontally, but very restricted movement vertically. This makes no sense whatsoever. If you're on a ledge and you want to see if there's a platform to fall on, you're out of luck. Looking up is even worse; you can only level the camera, which means you really can't look up at all! The only way to see if there's something above you is to look at the shadows. Platform jumping is frustrating, too, because the camera will level itself while jumping. This means you're jumping blind! Croc would be many times more enjoyable if these things were fixed. Ultimately, Croc is a disappointing game. Croc makes me wonder if the developers ever play their own game. I have a hard time believing the developers wanted frustrating camera angles and even more frustrating platform jumping. Not to say Croc is a bad game, but it has lots of unused potential. If you like heavy platform jumping games, you should definitely check out Croc. |
