Dreamcast's RAM
From Victor Ireland:

a reader wrote:" Why have Sega gone for such a small piece of memory for the Dreamcast? Most PC games tend to use a lot of memory (RAM). Do they not want as many games to get for success. 16Mbytes of main memory is too short to handle games that you get now. Do you Know why and can you tell me."

I don't know WHY you didn't answer this. If you remove the OS bloat that is Windows 95/98/NT which has to be everything to everyone you can get by just fine on 16 MB. Granted, 32 would be nice, but 16 is FINE, especially if you can the Wince layer in the Dreamcast and program using custom libraries, as virtually ALL the SoJ developed titles have done thus far.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Heya Vic... I didn't answer it because, well, the I was in a Dave Z kind of mood, and didn't like the way the reader phrased the question:

"Do you Know why and can you tell me."

Can you tell me? I guess I could, but..

Anyhow, just felt like being a smart arse, I supposed it worked out in the end.. hey, you wrote me an e-mail didn't you? Thanks for setting it straight.

Wake Up AM!
From Milan Frani:

With Dreamcast's launch a month away, Sega's AM division has only confirmed three arcade translations (Spike Out, Virtua Fighter 3, Sega Rally). My question is how big a team is the AM division and what is the maximum number of games can they work on? This question came to mind because there's more great Sega arcade titles than just those three.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:

In a move that demonstrates the power of restructuring more than anything else, the much vaunted Sega of Japan AM divisions have been separated into eight parts. The eight parts of AM make up what is arguably the most potent arcade development in the industry. Here's a brief description of each of the divisions:

AM 1 through 3 is arcade game software development.

AM4 is arcade game hardware development; they make the cabinets.

AM5 is coin operation machine development.

AM6 is amusement-theme-park development.

AM11 and AM12 are new arcade game software sections; AM11 is made up of ex-AM2 members. They are currently working on Spike Out (which hasn't been confirmed for Dreamcast).

Getting to your question, Sega doesn't want to port "old" arcade titles to Dreamcast, so a lot of Model 3 stuff might get left behind; Sega will pick up the arcade ports once the Naomi products start rolling in (they might even release arcade and DC titles at the same time, the two systems are that compatible!). On a related note, AM's two big creators, Yu Suzuki and Tetsuya Mizuguchi are working on home titles! Should be interesting...

Settle Down Sparky!
From D. Lake:

I'm writing this letter in response to all of the letters that I read in all the Dreamcast sites from worried gamers. I'm a diehard Sega fan, and have been ever since the Genesis first came out. I've been through the best with Sega (Genesis), the worst (Sega CD, and 32X), and the unfortunate (Saturn), yet I am still highly ecstatic about the Dreamcast. The reason for this unabandoned loyalty? Faith.

I have an unwavering faith in Sega. I know that no one else can give me kind of excellent games, Arcade OR Console, that Sega has. I think that it wouldn't be such a stretch to say that Sega is the best software creator, EVER (if you take into account all of their home and arcade games). Yeah, Nintendo has Miyamoto, but he only makes one or two games a year. Sony has Square and Namco, but now (hopefully they will make some games THIS time) we also have Namco; and Square is a great company, don't get me wrong, but with the other 300 companies making games for the Dreamcast, we should have plenty of Quality RPG's (Climax Landers, anybody?). Plus, the Saturn has GREAT RPG's ( Panzer Saga, Shining Force 3, Grandia, Lunar, the list goes on... ), all without Square's support. What am I trying to say? Have faith in Sega.

Now to calm down worried gamers about the Dreamcast's first batch of games:

Virtua Fighter 3TB- Have you seen the new pics at the Hardcore Gaming site? The game looks freaking UNBELIEVABLE!!! And even if the game is not perfect for the JAPANESE launch, Sega still has time to fix up the game for the AMERICAN launch. Do you remember VF 1 for the Saturn? It was rushed for the Japanese launch, yet it was improved for the American launch ( less polygon breakup, etc.) . Believe me, Sega doesn't want to disappoint their fans now that everything's on the line. Plus, do you really think that Yu Suzuki, the master of all things Virtua, would want a half-done port of one of his masterpieces?

Sega Rally 2- The same thing goes for this game. And even if it's not 100% perfect, it will still look better than ANY other racing game for the home consoles. Plus they've still got time to polish up the games graphics (especially if they have people working on the game 'round the clock like I've heard).

Sonic Adventure- Do I need to say anything but: THIS IS THE ONE, FOLKS!!! I have no worries here, and neither should you, being that Yuji Naka is Sega's Miyamoto.

As for the other games: If some of the First-Generation games aren't the best games in existence, so what?!? Just remember that they are First-Generation Games. The developers need time to learn the intricate details of developing for this system, even if it is easy to develop for. Plus, if I were Sony or Nintendo, I'd LOVE to have my First-Generation games look this good! I'm sorry, but what the HELL is up with all of these people saying that ANY of the games can be done on the PSX or N64?!? Excuse me, but you would have to be BLIND, BIAS, or TOTALLY OUT OF YOUR MIND to honestly believe that foolish statement. I'm not bias, ( being that I own a Playstation ) but it just isn't possible. Wake up, people! The Dreamcast is probably more powerful that PSX AND N64 COMBINED! Stop daydreaming and face reality. By the way, who does that jerk, Andrew Romano, think he is, Shigeru Miyamoto?!? That just goes to show you how ignorant game players ruined the Saturn's chances at success in America just as much as Sega's foolish mistakes ( More on that in another letter. ). Hey, if you don't like Sega, then stop irritating the hell out of Sega's true fans and play your 32-Bit Playstation, with it's outdated, yet somehow "Superior" graphics. "Yeah, Res Evil 2 and FF7 has better graphics than Dreamcast, even though it only has pre-rendered backgrounds!" ( Phew! Sorry about that, but I can get carried away sometimes.).

Look at it this way: Sega has learned from their mistakes, and are ready to repent for their sins two-fold. They are doing everything right now, and they know the consequences if they screw it up now. I believe that Sony is oversaturating the market with too many bad games, as compared to great, and Nintendo is not oversaturating the market with ENOUGH games, never mind great games. The gaming scene NEEDS this system right now. So I feel that the Dreamcast will be a welcome breeze of fresh air for the industry.

Send me your responses to my little rant here. I welcome all to talk about the thing I love: Video Games. Email me at:
theblackman6@hotmail.com
( Yes, even you PSX and N64 Owners. )

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I agree, the current game market is getting stale (great Playstation titles aside), and it's more than time for some added spice. Like many other gamers, I'm banking on Dreamcast to provide that spice. Perhaps not so much this year, but more throughout '99. Sonic, VF3, Rally, and Blue Stinger will probably be the most popular titles this year, I can't imagine what '99 holds. Oh man, oh man, oh Manny Lee.

Dreamcast Q & A
From Mehrpore:

Hello Fernando,

What's with all these rumors about developers not having Set 5 kits yet? Isn't this supposed to be the new & improved Sega dedicated to serving 3rd parties?

Who started that stupid rumor that the PSX2 will use the same SH4 and PVR2 chips as DC, but run twice as fast?? As if Sega doesn't have exclusive contracts with both Hitachi and NEC; or that Sony would buy "off-the-shelf" when they have their own multi-billion dollar R&D facilities.

What do you think will happen to Sega if DC fails?(we all hope it doesn't but...) Could a behemoth like NEC or Microsoft swallow it up??

What are the real chances that Sega will offer an upgrade for the DC? It seems that only systems that are in decline(Genesis 32X, SegaCD) or utter failures(N64 Ram pack, TG16 CD, Jaguar CD) get upgrades.

Do you think that Square is really going for DC development or just pulling our chains? Could they just do some half-assed port of a second-rate game (SaGa Frontier 2)?

Finally, do Blizzard or LucasArts have any DC projects? Imagine playing Diablo 2 or Jedi Knight over the net on your DC....

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
-It's not a rumor, many developers are still on the Set 4. It's not through any faults of Sega, Sega is delivering the kits to developers as soon as they have them to give out, you got to remember that Set 5 was finalized just a month or so ago. Don't worry, for the most part Dreamcast developers are more than happy with Sega's support.

-Probably some Playstation page that didn't get their copy of Metal Gear Solid yet. You would think with so many great games out for the system, Playstation webmasters would report on those instead of making up stupid rumors.

-If the Dreamcast fails? Depends how badly it fails. Worst case scenario Sega sticks to the arcades and licensing their titles for home ports to other companies. I don't see it happening though.

-There's an expansion port on the Dreamcast, so if the need arises, Sega can upgrade the thing.. but god damn the thing isn't even out yet, why the fuck are people talking about upgrades already! Any upgrade is at least a year off, probably even more than that if at all.. blah.

-I think Square is evaluating the system, nothing more, nothing less. They have development kits and they're tooling around; who knows if they'll actually do anything though? My crystal ball is broken so I ain't saying.

-Blizzard? Doubtful right now, they got enough problems as it is. LucasArts, yes; Sega said as much at the Babbages managers meeting. Expect some Dreamcast games to go along with the new movies.

Dricas.com
From George Esteban:

I think you're being too hard on the Dricas page. Personally, I like the design: the Dricas logo looks like it belongs on a detergent label, but it follows the kind of "tasteful cheesiness" found on MTV these days. You also have to take into consideration that the page is designed for Dreamcast users. This means that it'll run on an inferior browser which will need the low-res images for convenient navigation. Hopefully, Sega and Microsoft will have Internet Explorer ready for the US launch. And finally, you complain about the bland previews section...what do you expect from Sega? Hopefully we can change the startup page to SegaNet.

Also, I was wondering if there were any news you could dig up about Apaloosa's Ecco the Dolphin for DC.

Keep up the good work,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I guess I was hoping for at least some new shots, I mean, the official SOJ page does a better job with covering the Dreamcast than this crap. Shoddy browser or not, what's up with those damn backgrounds? The index one looks like something out of Twister, the one on the burn page looks like the Master System trying to do fire effects; disgusting!

I'll do some digging, but I doubt much will turn up; Sega has a tight leash on what Dreamcast info developers can give out to the press: several developers have already been verbally reprimanded. Ouch baby, guess Sega has the whips and chains out this time around.

Thanks, I'll do my best to maintain some level of quality around here, muhahaha!

D & D Canned?
From Amitav Chowdhury:

According to NCS (national console support) D&D Collection for Saturn has been cancelled? it said it is no longer on pre order lists or anything... say it aint so? (though i saw a preview or someting on your site saying there was a playable demo somewhere..) reply soon if can. :)

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
D & D Collection has been on and off for as long as I can remember, something tells me it's not cancelled just yet. The game was on Capcom's TGS brochure, it's on the TBA list on Capcom's Japanese webpage, and it was on display at a recent Capcom show in Hong Kong. Perhaps it has disappeared from NCS's list because it's not coming out until '99? If I were fan of the game, I wouldn't give up hope just yet, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it either.

Saturn Owners Are Lucky
From Yuri Tacher:

I used ot be a big Sega fan, ever since the Master System days. Got me a Genesis when possible, even got the SegaCD, and 32X. As you can imagine, those last 2 turned me off on Sega completly for a while, and I got myself a PSX. Then the day Sega reared up and bit me in the ass: The day X-men vs SF came out with the memory cart. I foolishly looked at the PSX version, puked, and thank my lucky stars, found a used Saturn (the fool) for 50 bucks and am now happyliy buying all these CapCom fighters I so dearly love to play for hours on end (Just this minute got Marvel vs SF). And my god, how can a system that made Radiant Silvergun possible perish? It's so sad that I finally got the system near the end of it's lifetime, but at least I'm getting a chance.

So you guys that HAVE been playing on your Saturns for a while now, remember how lucky you really are.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I still remember the day I got Sega Rally, man, I must of played that games for hours and hours. Ah, the memories..

More DC Questions
From am2guy@hotmail.com:

I've reserved my Sega Dreamcast, so the only thing now is the torturous 4 week wait! There's a couple of issues regarding the Dreamcast that I'm curious about:

1. I wont be able to use the net modem on the import Dreamcast, but do you someone will find a way to make this modem work on our phonelines (like an adapter)? They've found a way to play imports on the Saturn, PSX, and N64.

2. Will Sega Rally 2 feature online play?

3. Will Virtual On 2?

4. What are the status of these potential Dreamcast games: Lost World, Harley Davidson & L.A. Riders, GunBlade, and Sonic Fighters.

Thanks in advance,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. Who said it wouldn't work? The Japanese Netlink worked fine on US Saturns so I don't see why the Dreamcast modem won't work over here. 2. Yes, it's the first game to take advantage of it.

3. Well, the Netlink version of Virtual On did, so I would guess the Dreamcast sequel would as well.

4. Hum, not much I'm afraid. I think you'll find that Sega wants to leave the "older" arcade games behind and concentrate on newer titles, mainly new Dreamcast exclusive games and Naomi ports.

The Forum's #1 Poster Sends An E-mail
From Mina Guzman:

Well, to that one guy who sent mail about my mail, I was referring to what the casual gamer might think of DC, not me. I am already happy with VF3 on DC, and even if SEGA RALLY 2 looked the way it did, I would still get it. I think he should pay more attention.

Anyways, no Cavedog for DC? Why? That's no fair! I hate this! I wanted to play Total Annihilation (with/out lag) on DC! It would be so perfect, I was happy to hear rumors of Cavegod signing on with DC, but now the evil news. Damn. This sucks!

Fernando! Help me! Please! I need TA for DC! (Not T & A mind you!)

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, TA on DC without lag? What makes you so sure it would of been? The DC's modem is 33.6, we have no idea how well the net play is supported. Perhaps (actually, it better be) the US plan will be much more developed, but the current Japanese net support is minimal. The applications (browser, e-mail) are horrible and the netplay isn't proven. I hate to say it, but for the best TA online experience, get a nice PC and a fast net connection (cable modem, asdl, t1). Laney is a school right? Don't they have a good t1 connection for you to use? Or at least a LAN?

Okay, I'll strap on my Dreamcast leather jacket and go kick some Cave Dog tail! Or not...tehee.

Sega Focus Group Hits Chicago
From Chaos:

Last Wednesday the 22nd a friend of mine went downtown to the John Hancok building I think to be part of a focus group about the Dreamcast like the one you reported about in New York. He got to play Sonic Adventures for a little bit but he also told me that the Sega reps talked about there marketing plans he said they will set up booths like the ones we see today for N64 and PSX but it will work with some kind of card system were you slide the card through a reader to play the game you want the cards will be by the demo display. He also said he saw a booklet or something in witch he saw a box of Fifth Element video game for DC. I know he went to the focus group thing for sure but the display case stuff and the Fifth Element info could be made up but I don't think so he is a trusted friend. This is probably just considered rumor but it's still cool.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I'd comment extensively on this very interesting e-mail, but I'm afraid Sega would try to chop off my head if I did. They're really touchy about people talking to the public about their focus groups, which is strange because the attendees don't have to sign any NDAs. I suppose it's nice that Sega is trying to find out what the public thinks about Dreamcast, but you have to remember, these are the same focus groups which agreed that the big Saturn boxes were better than normal jewel cases...

Fifth Element on Dreamcast? As far as I know, Kalisto (French developer) owns the rights to Fifth Element video games. Interestingly enough, people have hinted that Kalisto would do some Dreamcast development. Somehow I don't see Fifth Element being released on Sega's console. Not only did the PC/PSX games get horrible reviews, by the time the system is out in fall of '99 the license would be horribly outdated.

Doom, Quake, And Other Fun Stuff
From Shuichi James:

hello, love your site.
when Duke Nukem & Quake were released for the saturn, i got them rightaway and i love them both, but i play Doom more often despite the slow-down and poor graphics because the enemies in Doom seem to attack in greater numbers. i was wondering if Quake & Duke Nukem look and play better because the enemies are in smaller groups or is it just a coincidence? could you recommend a game a largest groups of enemies attacking at the same time? thanx :-}

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, Quake and Duke are often called the pinnacle of first person shooters on Saturn, so it's hard to find any game better than those two. I suggest checking out PowerSlave though; it's a first person shooter using the same sort of engine as Duke, it's tons of fun. Good luck trying to find it though, PowerSlave is one of the rarer Saturn titles. From there you'll probably have to move up to PC gaming or perhaps Dreamcast for good first person shooting action.

Neo Pocket
From Adam Chance:

Maybe I am just stupid. But this whole Neo-Geo Pocket thing dosen't make sense to me.

Okay here is my understanding. Neo-Geo Pocket is a handheld in the grand tradition of Game Boy (and Game Boy will stomp this thing, no doubt in my mind about that). It is manufactured by SNK which has absolutely no ties with Sega. However it also doubles as some sort of plug in (Virtual Memory maybe?) with the Dreamcast. Apparently it will enhance some sort of existing Dreamcast Games (I am gonna guess just SNK games and no others).

I just don't get it. Why is Sega allowing this unit to exist? It would make more sense if the Dreamcast was on the market for some time (there is nothing stopping people from buying a Dreamcast, reverse engineering and creating add-ons without Sega's go ahead, that is what the whole deal was with Galloob and Nintendo in the early '90's) but if the peripheal is already in existence than this suggests cooperation with Sega.

This seems to me like Nintendo creating an add-on for the PSX that works with the Game Boy. Cold day in Hades before that happens.

So my question is 2 fold. 1. What did I get wrong? Please correct me, if I have a screwed up understanding than that is probably why I am confused.

2. What is the deal with SNK making an add on for a Sega product that is not released:?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
The Neo Geo Pocket is not really an add-on for Dreamcast, it's just compatible with the console in some way (SNK is not saying how). As you noted, it will probably enhance SNK Dreamcast titles but not much else. The primary function of the unit is as a stand-alone portable machine. When SNK feels like talking about the Neo's Dreamcast ties, we'll report it on it.

Dreamcast Rumors, Woohoo!
From Andre Henderson:

I've heard rumors that Sega will upgrade the Sega Dreamcast after it's release in Japan ( a higher modem from 33.6 to 56, 300 MHz instead of 200 etc). Is there any truth to this or is it just rumors and if there is any truth to it, what will the upgrades be?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
The modem is upgradeable, and Sega could very well release a modem update in Japan but don't expect it for at least a year. The US system is a different story; at the very least we'll see a 56K on that sucker, maybe even the option to use cable modems and other high bandwidth devices.

The processor rumor is pure crap; Sega isn't going to update the Hitachi SH-4 chip. The new generation of SH series is in the works though but don't expect it to be used for Dreamcast. On the other hand Sega could upgrade the Power VR 2 via the Dreamcast's expansion port. Don't expect any of this to come to fruition until at least late '99.

A Few Kind Words
From Darkstalker:

I just finished your mailbag section [the section i really love (decided to say that, since i haven't heard a single mention about the readers of this site liking it or not) and read ever day] for Oct 26. And i have one thing to say to you about your witty response to a Playstation-brainwashed-dweeb-lets-give-more-MONEY-to-Sony-because- they-are-so-cool emailer named, "Andrew Romano" The subject titled,"Dreamcast Is Nothin." (I say we kill the basterd right here and now)

FUCK YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, i know that was 2 things, but i actually feel sorry for this dweeb. First of all, who does this guy think he is??? Oh yah, I know, he is the almighty wisest person on Earth, and he know what game system is crap or not(I've been praying to that game god all my life, and not once has he bestowed apun me such grand knowledge). I don't want to go on and on and on, talking about such, such.... whats the word, an ignorant individual, and make this email longer than when first percived. I said my peace, and keep up the excellant work.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Thanks for the kind words, they bring a smile to my face. I'm glad you like the mailbag section, it seems the rest of the visitors enjoy it as well; it's the second most popular section (behind the forum!). As for your comments on Andy, well, I'll let Andy speak for himself... FUCK YAH!:)

Why?
From Alasdair MacPhail:

Why have Sega gone for such a small piece of memory for the Dreamcast? Most PC games tend to use a lot of memory (RAM). Do they not want as many games to get for success. 16Mbytes of main memory is too short to handle games that you get now. Do you Know why and can you tell me.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I know why but I can't tell you, hah (you deserve as much for such a poorly written e-mail)!

Dreamcast Is Not So Nothing?
From Andrew Romano:

I was a little to critical. Sorry, I didn't say I wasn't going to buy the system. It's because Sega has always brought out new systems and didn't support them enough. I'll have to see what comes next year when the system is released in the states.

Dreamcast at INNOVATIONS
From Sean Kennedy:

Hello,

I was reading your article about Sega having a Dreamcast Innovations Exibit and wanted to ask a question about it. Do you know if this will only be at the Walt Disney World Innovations, or if it will also be at the Disneyland Innovations here in California? The Innovations at Disneyland just opened, I think at the beginning of October, in the new Tomorrowland.

Thanks in advance for reading my letter.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
From what I hear, the exhibit is only planned for EPCOT. It's scheduled to open in late-November. Nothing on a Disneyland equivalent so far, but I wouldn't count it out.

Dreamcast Unreal
From Kain:

I like other 1st person shooting fan like to change the look of my character "Spawn or Venom...", And like others I download the skins and models from the game fan site... Do you know anything about DC Unreal if it has the ability to download and use skins or models from the internet and use it on the console? And how we can backup the skins in a console? we need DC HD maybe?

And think of other types of games "RPG's, Adventure, Racing...etc!" if it has the ability to download "Tracks, Cars, Characters, Quests..."

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
It's a good question, but one that no one has addressed yet; Unreal on Dreamcast may be running, but no one is talking on the record about it. Possibilities do exist. Perhaps they could be saved on the Dreamcast's 16 Megs of RAM (you'd have to re-download the files every time though). The VM unit might be another option... the DC HD is an outside shot. Don't expect it to be released in the US unless the Dreamcast is a mammoth success (I mean, greater than Genesis/SNES type of success).

Dreamcast is Nothing!
From Andrew Romano:

I've been looking at the screen shots for half of these Dreamcast games, and I can tell you I can produce better graphics with a PC based 3D modeling program such as Metacreations Raydream Studio. Sega's Dreamcast might sell big in the Homeland but remember Playstation has such a hold on the market in the states that another system ain't going to take it away from them. Nintendo beat out Sega years ago with a slower and less advanced system. The SNES was not as fast as the Gen. Dreamcast has some amazing tech specs but I don't see any of it being used in the games. Playstation puts out better graphics now as a 32 bit system, and Zelda 64 makes these games look 16 bit. Sega has more to learn then to release another system. Is this their 5th system with in a 6 year time frame. Come on Sega cripped off the america public once before and I'm not wasting my money on another.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
That e-mail was almost coherent, almost. If you're such a great 3D modeler, why don't you go make a Sonic Adventure-like demo in real-time... thought so. As for "Dreamcast has some amazing tech specs but I don't see any of it being used in the games," you seen it in person have you? If you have such a disdain for Sega, why the hell are you browsing the site? Blah, get lost.

Attitude!
From razv2@netcom.ca:

I just wanna talk about the attiutde about gamers these day's. It seems that everyone has something to complain about. Someone named Mina wrote to your site and said that games like Sega Rally2 and VF3 didn't look all that great. I'm am still trying to figure out how someone can be so picky!!! Even if the games don't look completely UMBELIEVABLE, that doesn't mean that they look disappointing. Compare how those games look to every other game on the home console market, they look 3 times better than Mario64 and those are just early shots of the games!!! I think that gamers are becoming too greedy and unappreciative of games these day's. It's like everyone is a all intelligent video game smart ass who's knows everything there is to know about games. It's fussy, picky gamers like that who made the saturn bomb even worse than Magic Johnsons TV career.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I don't think this is exactly the case, and I do think that Mina had good intentions with her e-mail.. but I would agree that some gamers, mostly online, take things too seriously. When people start saying they won't be able to enjoy VF3tb because a few polygons are off, well, um, I feel sorry for that person. Of course it might be relevant to point out graphics flaws like this in a news report or game review, but when it's something so minor, I can't really it affecting the game experience at all. Like I always say, just play the games and let everything else take care of itself.

Shining Force Q
From Cutie2moon@aol.com:

I do agree with Mina's desire for feminine touch =) But anyways, I beated Shining Force 3 Scenario 1 (my brother got me into playing it) and I was wondering if all 3 scenarios will still be released in Europe. I would love to continue the Shining story in english.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Feminine touch eh, well, the new design is two weeks away; I think you'll like it. And if you don't, well, go design your own damn page:) Sorry about Shining Force, but you better start learning some Japanese... doh!

Random Q & A
From Brenda Chua:

Dear Fernando,

It is nice to see that you managed to handle all the work in your website, though you claimed that it has been a rough week for you.

Anyway, I have a few qwuestions for you:
1.) Is MSH vs. SF the last great Capcom game for the SS? I hope there's more.
2.) What other great games can I look forward to before DC arrives?
3.) Personally, do you think DC will succeed? Sega has done their homework thus far. I hope they can sustain it by having a consistent arrivals of great games. This is something the Saturn and Genesis lacks and a reason why both systems did not become number one.
4.) Can you update us on the any basketball titles. I once saw a screenshot of NBA Action 2000 by core concepts and it looks awesome. Are there other basketball games planned for DC?
5.) After Sonic Adventures, what is Yuji Naka's next project?

Well, I hope you answer my mail and thanks.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I'll do my best..

1. There's a few titles from Capcom left. Dungeons & Dragons Collection (TBA) and the last two Capcom Collection volumes.

2. Other Saturn games between now and Dreamcast launch? Nothing that really excited I'm afraid, at least nothing that pops into my mind.

3. They certainly have the capability to succeed, then again, you have to look at what you mean by "succeed." If you mean release lots of fun, playable titles, then yes, they certainly will. If you mean take the greatest share of the video game market, well, it's possible, but it will be hard, especially in the US.

4. A month ago I had several shots of Visual Concepts' basketball title, but I have been asked to take that down. I'm afraid US developers are extremely quiet when it comes to Dreamcast development details... it's hard enough to confirm who's onboard, let alone individual projects.

5. The next project is probably a nice long vacation. Sonic Adventure has been very demanding for Naka-san, I'm sure he'll want a respite, no matter how brief. After that, who knows.. Burning Rangers 2? NiGHTS 2? Another original series?

Sonic and VF3tb
From EWeber98@aol.com:

I hear constantly how the VF3tb conversion will not be arcade perfect (hopefully I won't notice since I haven't played it in about 4 months) and excuses that these are first generation tittles. The question is, if the game(s) aren't arcade perfect for the Dreamcast in Japan, will SOJ or SOA fix the small problems and make the game(s) better for the American Public?

Also, I asked this before but you didn't have the answer at the time. Whats up the enemies in Sonic Adventure, are they sporadic or are they jumping out at you around every corner?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Sega of America might tweak some stuff, but don't expect any drastic changes. That's the way it usually works, or at least how it worked on Saturn.

I haven't played the game so I can't comment.

Console Questions
From Rick Smith:

Q1. why do consoles & games come out in japan first? Q2. do consoles & games sell more in america or japan? Q3. why is it that 3rd party game makers had a hard time making excellent looking games for the saturn & sega was able to do it?....just a thought...sega should keep their mouth shut & surprise every1 when they come out with the dreamcast in america.(like before summer.) thanx. keep up tha good work.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. A seemingly simple question, but it actually requires a long response for a complete answer. Here's the quickie version: consoles are made in Japan/Japanese are more open to new technology. Games come out sooner in Japan for the same reasons, the games are developed there, so they come out there. Also take into consideration translation issues.

2. They sell to a greater percent of the population in Japan, but do more units in the US.

3. Because the Saturn was hard to develop for, the tools Sega provided were meager. In order to get anything out of the machine, developers really had to push it, and most third parties weren't willing to do that.

Um, surprise launch before summer? That's what they did for Saturn, and that worked really well, didn't it?

What's this? DC Ramblings!
From Mina:

No I'm not Sailor V, but I am prettier!

Hi Fernando, nice site, needs a woman's touch, but nice anyways. My reason for mailing you is that I am concerned for SEGA and it's upcoming Monster of a Console the Dreamcast. The Specs of the system itself are impressive enough to make me want one and the Sonic Adventures Images and Mpegs floating around the Net are spectacular, but as for the other games that are to be out at DC's Launch, they do not look anymore impressive than the current 32-Bit/64-Bit games that are out now.

First off with VF3. We get mixed views in this, Good and Bad. Good that it FEELS like VF3, it plays like VF3 and the background are in 3D. But the characters really show some limitiaion in the game. It makes you think if Sega isn't all talk and just hype. After so much praising of NEC's PowerVR 2 DC Chip, VF3 makes you want to swallow your own words, and for Sega Rally 2, my most favorite Arcade Racer, such a pitty, for being on a system that out specs the Model 3, it's a shame to see it on Video and at only PC Quality. And I know, everyone's excuse, "But it's the Gameplay that matters..." will be geared at this e-mail, but the matter of the fact is, no one will be happy unless SEGA's games looks better than anything in this market. Of course I totaly agree with Gamplay over Graphics, which is why River Raid on the Atari is my favorite game. But I'm referring to SEGA's success, only hardcore gamers will go for Gameplay over Graphics, while all 30 Million 'Casual' gamers (on the PSX now) jump to best looking thing on the Market. So far the only game that does what Sega says the DC can do is Sonic Adventures. But is that Enough? Can one game bring DC into the spotlight just long enough for SEGA and 3rd Parties to crank out their games? Or will the current PSX owners keep their system's seeing that most DC games dont look different from their PSX game because they dont know better.

I know that SEGA will be spending about 1/2 a Billion on Marketing, Advertising and such, but will it be enough? Sony's TV Ads are way awesome and they always include some sort of humor. Like MGS, I loved that Commercial because it was just funny. And they show the game in action (Psssst, I saw some polygon breakup).

What I think Sega needs to do is bring back the badass attitude that they had with the Genesis. I'm talking Side by Side comparison, like Genesis vs SNES (Sonic vs Mario). Also that, "Plaything, UrNot Red(e)," was a good start, but why did they stop there?

And the other hand, SEGA needs to make a whole new scene, just Dreamcast. In otherwords, Sega should make like DC is the only thing of it's kind in this world, that there is nothing more for you to get after a DC. What they need to do is a 1/2 hour Show on DC. A lot like that S&K Contest on MTv on Alcatraz, where they hyped up Sonic & Knuckles to death and has these people play live on TV from Alcatraz Island. That made me go out and get the game just because it was the cool thing to do! And I loved Sega for that because that shows they #1 Know how to party, #2 Grab Attention, and #3 Shows that they are not your ordinary Video Game Company. And it was an overall goodtime. Sega needs to do that. Interact with people, hold beach parties with DC Booths out there, have a every weekend DC challange on TV, have people play games on DC for Prizes broadcasted on TV!! Sega needs to go insane with what they have now, because if they keep holding back, being arrogant and stuck up like the Big N, then they will surely die in the corner thier faces are stuck in, because they need everyone here to know what a DC is, or they're dead... Game Over.

This site has a lot of visitors and probably has an influence on Hardcore Gamers, I suggest perhaps sometime that you try to get these People at SEGA of America to come here, in this Seganet.com Forum, also other Sega Sites as well. Is that really hard? I mean, they got nothing to do till the DC comes here, so is it hard for them to possibly spend a small amount of time with the people that made them? Us?

If only people at Sega would visit our Forum here... I think that would make many people here happy, at least read the posts, see what we want. After all, we're going to buy the DC and they don't want to disappoint us. Everytime I e-mail Sega, I just get a response saying thank you. I feel that I am being ignored. Fernando, is it possible for you to help us with that? Is there in anyway in this world that you can get SOA to perhaps listen to these people here? I'm sure your charming personality should grab somone's attention at SOA. =)

What has to happen is Interaction between SOA and us, the gamers. We're going to help make or break them. The Customer is Always Right.

- Mina

PS. I think you should start a Fan Art Section on this site. That would be sooo neato, not that I could draw anyways, but it would be fun since I see a lot of great Fan Art in the Forum.

Thanks for your time.

BTW - Will Games like Command & Conquere and Total Annihilation come to DC?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Women's touch? Well it certainly need a redesign, which we are working on. Look for it mid-November, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The thing is, the game's do look better than anything else in the console market, just not as good as Model 3. Fact of the matter is, you don't learn how to program for a system overnight, the final kits weren't even available until a month or so ago! Give Sega some time, the second wave of titles will look much better; right now, Sega is just pressing to meet the due dates.

Sega's adverts in Japan are excellent; the Sega Saturn Shiro line and the current Yukawa Dreamcast stuff is extremely popular. Hopefully some of that will rub off on Sega of America.

The marketing push in the US will start in '99, through the summer, up to launch. Believe you me, Sega is pulling out all the guns for the American launch; should be fun to watch.

Actually, SoA is quite busy preparing for the launch. Setting up marketing plans, getting distribution channels ready, hyping retailers and developers up, developing games, etc. etc. I doubt a Sega PR rep would take the time to come to a third-party site such as SegaNet, if anything, they'll post on sega.com or perhaps usenet (which they used to do back when the Saturn launched).

Various people from Sega visit the site everyday, and I usually have phone conversations with Sega once a week or so, so yes, it is possible to get in touch with them. I can imagine it's a bit more difficult to approach Sega from a strictly fan position and I don't think there's enough I can do to help that. It's not my business to tell Sega how to turn their PR department.

With the redesign, we'll be taking on affiliate Sega sites, so, if you want to start working on a Video Game Art site, we might be able to host and publicize your site come mid-November (if it's any good that is).

TA, a Microsoft property might be headed our way.. though it's too early to tell. I think those games play better on a PC than a console anyways.. but that's me.

Rally 2 -Game Over YEAAAH!-
From Nagi:

Dear Fernando and gang,

Does not the Sega Rally 2 problem remind you of the Virtua Racing conversion for the Saturn? While the UK magazines raved on about how many tracks and how many cars there were, the game had the worst collision detection and physics - someone could hit you from behind and you would go into a spin. It sucked. Nevertheless, to ensure I got the maximum value AND the maximum second hand price (before others found out what a crap game it was) I spent 7 days playing the thing to get as many "extras" as possible, and then sold it. Time Warner Interactive simply had no idea, and that was the last game I bought that was developed by them.

Now Virtua Racing was already old hat by the time it was released on the Saturn, so I could understand why Sega did not handle the conversion themselves. But it is beyond me why the conversion of Sega Rally 2 is left to some third party. I would rather play the game late than to have to avoid the game altogether because it was half done. Even if it had 20 tracks, the game would suck if the graphics are not the best, because that's the least people expect from the DC. If I had to choose between a straight (perfect) conversion of the arcade and a not so perfect conversion but with lots of extras, I would choose the former (then again I guess it also depends on the level of inperfection...). Sega Touring Car suffered from the same problem - why bother with the rear view mirror when the in game graphics are so crap? The programmers should have concentrated on the graphics rather than wasting time on a rear view mirror that looks positively awful anyway. Don't get me wrong: I like STC (beats both Daytona CCE any day), but it feels like a rush job whichever way you look at it, and that's a real shame.

My conclusion? I am concerned about the whole DC thing. I can only keep my fingers crossed that Sega makes no more mistakes.

Have a nice weekend!

Regards,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Way back when the Saturn was in its first year in the US, I used to buy nearly every decent-ish game released. One of those titles was Time Warner's Virtua Racing. Now, I know it had a lot of flaws, but it was half-way fun to play; lot's of tracks, decent 2-player mode, I dunno, I enjoyed it.

Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast is a different story. Sega is working on the conversion, just not the original Rally 2 arcade team (I have no idea who's actually doing the work). There's still a bit of time left to fix some of the problems in the game; worst case scenario, the game looks like a high-end PC title. That's that, for now.. let's wait for the release.

VMS at the Arcades
From Big Wave Dave:

From what I understand... We will be able to design custom sport plays, fight moves, cars, ect. and store them on the VMS, take them to Arcade and use them on the Arcade machines. What about the people who have not bought a DREAMCAST? (yet)

Why not sell the VMS units at the Arcades and have a device that lets one customize the different cars or moves at the Arcade?

After playing at the Arcade with a custom car the person will buy a DREAMCAST so they can try it out at home.

I know that SEGA wants to sell the VMS units to people who own DREAMCASTS but couldn't it work the other way around also?

What do you think?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Actually Sega isn't calling the Dreamcast PDA units "VMS" anymore, they're just "VM" now...

Selling VM units at the arcade, you know what, I never thought of that. I don't think Sega has either, or if they have, I think they have concluded it wouldn't work. Think about it like this: when you're at the arcade, you want a quick gaming fix. You want to sit down, step on the accelerator and zoom off. The last thing I would want to do at an arcade is say, "hold on, let me buy a 20-30 dollar VM unit, customize my silly car and then race." At least I'm pretty sure that's what the general public would say to the idea...

Dreamcast US Market Speculation
From :

IMHO, there are a few factors that will kill or cripple the DC when it launches here:

Sport games are crucial since they are a big chunk of the market and also help sell hardware. Sega needs quality football, basketball and hockey titles to match Sony's PSX2 line-up. But, SOA has a track record of CRAPPY sports titles(NHL All-Star Hockey, NBA '98, Joe Montana FB). EA, whose sports games are getting shittier all the time, hasn't said much about it's DC development plans. The only other option is the VR Sports line(shudder).

SOA itself-the mindset is probably the same as in the Saturn and Genesis days. Remember how they would create shit games(Taz, X-men, Bug, 3 Dirty Dwarves) and promote their own shit instead of quality SOJ games (Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Panzer Zwei). You can see it again with Geist Force. The game looked worse at TGS than what they showed at E3(which was probably a FMV clip). Not to mention the fact that the title is being designed with a Hollywood company specializing in special effects(SOA+Hollywood=Shit game). Imagine how much advertising will be wasted on this piece of turd next fall.

An early launch of PSX2-Sega needs at least a year headstart to gain a decent userbase and a good library of titles. We all know that Sony's machine will churn out more polygons, have more memory and possibly include DVD. But, if Sony can get their machine out early, with more features, plus add their marketing muscle to it, Sega has no chance. You guys know that the average gamer thinks Sega is another word for failure, while Sony is king right now. So, which machine would most people buy if they both launched at nearly the same time.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Sports: Visual Concepts is working on a football and basketball title for the US launch. If you were lucky enough to see the images of the two games before Sega made me take them down, well, they look great. Visual Concepts developed the NBA Action '98 on Saturn, which wasn't half-bad. The company isn't proven at football titles though. EA Sports, thought not officially announced, will be on board the Dreamcast development boat come next year. Let's face it, EA ports their games to any viable format; the ease of portability from PC to Dreamcast is probably making EA drool right now.

Well, Geist Force hits Japan this December, and if it's as bad as it was at TGS expect it to get absolutely panned by Japanese publication and US websites. Something tells me Geist Force is in contention for worst selling Dreamcast title in Japan. Let's hope Sega of America gets the message.

Too true, but if Sega has fall of '99 all to themselves I think they'll be able to win back that user base.

Controller Triggers
From Chaos:

People have been bitchin about how the DC controller is bad for this and sucks at that I dont know if its true or not cause I have only heard reports but thats not what I'm writing about. I wanted to express my hope of what can be done with it, mainly the dual analog trigger buttons under the controller. Imagine a racing game where you can control the gas and brake perfectly and get that semi-arcade feel or a 1st person game wich lets you control your gunfire from a few shots every couple of seconds to fifthty in half a second. This could be used for so many other things its just great maybe revolutionary. What do you guys at seganet think. Also is there anything new about Metal Gear DC.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
It's a little known fact, but the NiGHTS pad also had analog triggers. That was used in what, two, three games? Besides, using the trigger for accel. and brake isn't comfortable for me; I rather use the triggers for shifting.

Castlevania on DC
From Sujith Thankappan:

It was great to read how a new version of Caslevania is going to be developed for the Dreamcast. However, your reliable source told you that Konami's American division is making it. What the hell is Konami thinking? No offense to the guys at Konami's American division, but this is a distinctly Japanese series and I cannot foresee the greatness of something like the last Castlevania being overshadowed by a non-Japanese developed Castlevania. We all know why no one plays Contra on the PSX. So, please tell me that the game is being overseen by one of the original guys from Konami's Japanese branch.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Ack, ack, ack. Yes, my source was as shocked as you are to be informed that Konami of America is working on the title. The reasoning behind this is beyond me, maybe it's because American programmers have a better grasp of Direct X and Konami wants to code to WinCE instead of SegAPI? I just can't imagine what's going on, but the game is so "secret" right now, there's no way Konami would make an official comment on it. We're just going to have to wait and see until Konami goes on the record with the game.

Assorted Questions and Ramblings
From GoodCow:

Hello again. Today I have a few more questions.

1. Will there be a Street of Rage 4? Yes, I know they're making Dynamite Deka 2 but what about the original Streets of Rage? I would rather take that in 3D that some gay thing called Dynamite Deka with a Die Hard license on it.

2. I'm a little worried about the launch titles for the Dreamcast. We know that the Dreamcast is much more powerful than Model 3 but if the games are hard to translate, and those are the first games, it'll make the Dreamcast look like it isn't powerful like the Virtua Fighter port for the Saturn. Also EGM played some of the Dreamcast games and said they were disappointed. According to them Godzilla sucks because there's a 2 second delay between your button press and onscreen movement, (since Sega wanted to make it realistic) Pen-Pen is supposivley boring, etc. Really they just liked Sonic and Blue Stinger. Your comments?

3. Yes, I know your going to reply with "your a crack head" or "what the hell is wrong with you?!?" but I was wondering if the Saturn BASIC kit can make FMV games. I know I would need a seperate program to convert them to CPKs, but could Saturn BASIC program that? If so, what program would I use to convert the videos to CPK?

4. What about a Lunar 3?

5. Since Saturn games are un-copiable (spelling???) how do people that make games in Saturn BASIC put their game on a CD? I tried backing up SF3 on my CD Recorder (BACKUP...I already own it!) but it wouldn't work. Do the games only have copy protection if their liscenced?

6. This is really just a statement but, I know the perfect game that should have been translated to all the systems. Yes this is old and you probably haven't heard of it, but Strife. It used the Doom engine so it wuldn't be hard to port, but it used interlinking maps to create an RPG world. You could go from the twon map to the prison map and back and so on. There were over 30 locations (maps) and it lasted about 40 hours, and since it used the Doom engine it wouldn't have been hard to port. So...why didn't they? Any answers?

7. I think that Sonic Adventure video on the Sega of America website would be perfect as a commercial. It's got almost ALL game footage, it has music that will draw people in, and it's 34 seconds. Just cut a second of it since commercials can be 33 seconds and that would be a perfect commercial. By the way, I know they would never do this but this would be a funny commercial to advertise the Dreamcast system itself: They should have all gameplay shots in the background and have an announcer say something like "We here at Sega know we've had problems in the past. But we fired those CRACK HEADS" (Cut to shot of people smoking crack) "who thought of the Sega CD and 32X." (Cut to shot of Bernie Stolar saying "Your fired bitch!" to old Sega employees.) "We're a brand new Sega ... yadda yadda yadda ..." Point out how good the system is, and how they'll actually stick by it. Mention Namco, a Resident Evil Dreamcast Exclusive and that's basically it. Sega has to make a deal where Tekken 4 is a DReamcast only game and that along with Sonic Adventure, and a RE Exclusive will sell the system in America. As for Japan, VF will sell the system there. My main point...well I dunno. The Dreamcast will do real good in the begining but then as usual I think Sega of AMERICA will FUDGE it up! They FUDGED up everything except the Genises. Wow Sega of America....1 (In most people's opinions) for God only knows how many systems. 8 I think. Pico...that was gay. Game Gear...they killed it themselves! I still don't understand how that piece of sh't Game Boy with its no color games beat out the Game Gear. 32X...What the FUDGE was Sega SMOKING??? Sega CD...Yeah that was ok. Saturn...I love(d) it. Etc. Well those are my ramblings. Please comment.

Well I guess that's it. I'll probably ramble on more next week.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. My magic 8-ball broke today, so you'll have to ask me again when I buy a new one; feel free to mail me one to get an answer faster!

2. I haven't played any Dreamcast titles, so I'll reserve comments for now. If you're interested in varying opinions on what Sega had to offer, go to most major sites and read everyone's report, not just EGM's. Also, try to keep in mind that what you read was the opinion of one person at IGN. Other EGM staffers have significantly different opinions about some of the DC titles.

3. Hum, to be honest, I don't know. Perhaps you should send the question to Romar, or post in the GB Forum?

4. Game Arts has its hands full with Grandia 2 and Sankoshi (strategy RPG). Once these two titles are wrapped up (what, mid-99?), then we can start thinking about Lunar 3. Right now, Lunar 3 probably consists of design sketches and rejected concept proposals. 5. You can copy Saturn games, else, how would game makers burn different builds of their development titles? They got to test their games somehow before going to final print. Case in point, Working Designs sent me a pre-production Rayearth to review, it's just a basic CDR. The thing with Saturn CDRs is that you can't copy the copy-protection track, so you need to either swap, use a key-disc, or get a mod-chip installed to play the things. There's a Saturn-swapping FAQ in the FAQs page.

6. Strife eh? Probably because game companies didn't think it would be viable in the console market. If they don't think they can make money with it, it doesn't get made.

7. Haha, good points, bad spelling. Sega's marketing, I thought, was fairly good for Saturn, it just didn't get enough air time. Now, for the Hard Stuff campaign, oh man, that was the worst piece of shit in the world. The guys who thought that thing up are asses (go read the logs) and the campaign was generally bad. I'm happy to see those guys go. As for me, I think Sega should air the Japanese Dreamcast ads with English sub-titles but, um, heh, I don't think the American public will buy it.

About Software and Netplay
From WizKid:

First of All I just want to say that Seganet rocks keep up the good work. One of the best Arcade Machines of the year if not the best is Top Skater, is it coming out for the Dreamcast(please say yes). My second question is referring to the modem and playing over the net. With the Dreamcast will I have to pay Sega and log into their server or can I use my own ISP which could be good as long as you don't have to play someone with massive packet loss and getting all Lag. Finally will the modem have flash ROM in it to upgrade later on.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Top Skater? Sadly, no. The game is a Model 2 arcade game, and Sega isn't looking to reach back that far in its arcade line-up for Dreamcast titles (they have enough Model 3 and Naomi titles to port as it is). Perhaps we'll see a Top Skater 2 for Naomi or something; worse comes to worse, you'll have to make do with Cool Boarders, a neat snowboarding title.

You can use your own ISP for games that support TCP/IP, the other option is direct dial. The modem won't employ flash ROM, but it will be upgradeable (you can remove it and add a new one).

Controller Complaints
From Doug Baughman:

Ok, I've been pumped up for the Dreamcast release just as much as anyone else is, but I'm still really pissed off about the controller's lack of buttons. This is almost enough for me to wait for Playstation2. I mean, I'm not saying that every game needs an overwhelming amount of buttons, there are a lot of good ones, like Resident Evil. However, Tomb Raider seemed to have just enough buttons to cover Laura Croft's moves. I couldn't imagine playing that with two less buttons.

Then, a few days ago I made a realization while playing Turok. The digital pad can act as a set of four extra buttons, as well, if the programmers really need it. And then I thought "Duh! It's coming out with a keyboard and a mouse!" That seems like more control than anyone needs. But then I thought of something else.

The reason why Sega probably decided cut down on the buttons was because the idiot gamer kept getting confused. With a keyboard and mouse, sure, you can have ton of extra gaming possibilites, but how many games can you make with a keyboard and mouse AND a controller being both compatable? If they make a game that can use the keyboard and mouse, it's going to have to be able to fit on the controller first. People getting pumped over the PC conversions? I don't see how a lot can be done with six buttons and a start button.

So, I guess I have to thank here is Sega, for deciding that people weren't smart enought to discern more than 7 or 8 buttons on a controller, and all you idiots who couldn't play games in the first place and made Sega accomodate your lack of talent.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
On the behalf of idiot gamers everywhere: you welcome! Wait, no...

DC/Saturn Controller Converter
From Dave Flonex:

Do you know if the Saturn controller converter will come out in the US? I really like my Saturn pads. They're so much better than the PSX one, and much better for Capcom games. I'm planning on getting a DC, but I hope it doesn't fall into the computer game rut of releasing a buggy game, then patching it. I know that Accolade signed on, and I'm really mad at them for releasing buggy games and not fixing them.

PS - Which side of the Potomac do you live on? I live in Fairfax County.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
The Saturn controller converter coming to the US? Well, it's hard to say at the moment, considering the device isn't even confirmed for Japan! Though, if it does materialize in Japan, I think we'll see it here (probably in limited quantities though).

Well, console games are different beasts than PC titles, I mean, internet capabilities aside, it's still pretty hard to release a patch for a Dreamcast game. So, what does this mean? The responsible companies will make sure their game works fine when it gets released, the shoddy companies release crappy product that can't be fixed. Fun fun fun.

I'm in good old "Merryland", oh yeah, just happy to be here.

Dreamcast Modding
From ProfRev777@aol.com:

Hey there Fernando,

Like most Segaphiles I'm planning on importing a DC( reserved at both NCS and The Rage for good measure). So of course the big question is, do you think someone will have found a way to MOD the DC before the US release? On a similiar note, how long did it take for the SAT and PS( boo! =P) to get their MODifications?

One more Q, what would be the easiest way to get around the voltage difference? Can I just stroll into a local Radio Shack and pick up a converter of some kind? Or can I just play it in short intervals, if possible, so it doesn't overheat?

Love the site...

PS Didn't it give ya a tingly feeling to see Sonic back on the cover of a vid game mag?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
No way, the Dreamcast JP/USA modification won't be out (if ever) until the system is released in the states. If you remember, the Saturn US/JP solution that first hit the market was a converter cart by the GameShark/PAR people. The cart was released a month or two after the Saturn's May release in the US. Playstation import solutions came around the same time frames: first the swap-method, then the chips.

The voltage difference will not cause you any problems; the difference is so minimal that everything should run fine on our American outlets.

Sonic on mags? It's nice, for sure, but it's nothing out of this world for me, especially knowing some of the guys that write the mags (hehe, just kidding).

Dreamcast in Canada, eh?
From Derek Moseley:

Hello my name is derek i have a few questions how much does dreamcast cost in canada and will there be any new games for it by th year 2000?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
The Dreamcast is not out in Canada, but it will see a joint release with the American unit in fall of '99. Expect prices similar to the Yankee one's, save the exchange rate. New games by the year 2k? Of course!

Heck Yeah!
From Loren Smith:

1) I absolutely agree with your point on Namco. I just want them to release any damn thing to prove to my own unbelieving self that they are actually doing it. I didn't know how to react when I was reading the various reports of Namco-Sega partnership until I went to the IGN PSX page and saw "Namco Goes Over to the Dark Side." Slowly, a smile spread across my face. Another point needs to be made about this, I believe. SoJ's guy said, publicly, "I have faith in Namco," or something very close to that. And Namco has pledged their support. Now, I am no expert on Japanese culture, but for Namco to jump ship for the PSX2 before they have released at least several high-quality...mmm...high-LINE (I realized that I was about to apply the term "high-quality" to Tekken) titles such as Tekken 4, Soul Calibur, and whatever else good they got would be dishonor of the FIRST order. Not that they would necessarily be punished for such behavior, but I tend to doubt that it would occur to them as a serious idea in the first place. HOWEVER...I still doubt. Sony and its allies are a crafty bunch...much like I wish Sega was. Again, though, to sell out Sega at this point would not make Namco crafty, but dirty.

2) I can't find where you reported on a DC-bound 2D Castlevania, but I distinctly remember it being reported somewhere, and I was quite sure that it was you. So you think a Metal Gear game is on the way? Maybe a Castlevania SotN sequel afterwards? Contra? Anything?

3) Does SNK have anything planned other than KoF '98? 3a)That's on the new Neo-Geo64 hardware, right? 3b) So will it be an exact port, or will they go for some extra characters and modes and stuff, like the PSX versions lately have?

4) Maybe Crystal Dynamics should make another Legacy of Kain for DC. Are they a DC developer too?

5) Are you considering putting up some kind of release list or "rumored" list on the front? Obviously the last eight months (well, since May '95, actually) have proven for the Saturn that release dates and 35 cents will let you make a phone call, but they are still nice as a general reference. Maybe when DreamcastNet (DCNet? DreamNet? DeezNutzNet?) launches?

6) I guess at this point I'm just suggesting more work for you, but maybe you could set up some sort of "great games" lists. Maybe do an editorial on your favorites. Yeah, I know other sites do these things, but yours is the only one I look at regularly.

7) They had better stop screwing around and announce Marvel versus Capcom for DC.

8) Doug Erickson is right on. Sega continues its awe-inspiring game design and production on the way to DC glory, but what the HELL were they thinking by not yelling from the ramparts (and, more importantly, knowing themselves) that VF3 would indeed be a launch title from the moment it hit the arcades? Maybe they could have created Fighter's Gigamix w/Fighting Vipers 2, but it looks like FV2 isn't ready and, besides, the game needs to have changed beyond a ripoff of VF anyway.

9) Marvel Super Heroes rules! Does the 4 meg cart do anything different from the 1 meg?

Loren Smith

P. S. Please don't kill me for bringing this up here, AGAIN, but J. M. Vargas was quite correct to point out to me that Howie Kurtz is, at least as far as I can tell, not precisely a liberal, and not particularly a hardcore one. He is more a moderate, just-to-the-left-of-center Democrat whose reasonably fair-minded (not totally, but mostly) criticisms of this President and his administration I found compelling.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. This Namco thing confuses me to no end, on one hand, Iri-san said, "I have faith in Namco." On the other hand, this sort of drastic change for a game company is usually well announced. You know, we're used to Warp-style changing of sides (Kenji Eno dissing Sony at a Sony game show to announce Enemy Zero for Saturn). Anyhow, I think Namco will slowly, but surely become a true third party developer, cross-platforming titles as much as possible, and generally supporting all viable systems.

2. I think Sega-X or something mentioned it. Strangely enough, your e-mail prompted an informer to step up and let me know that Konami is working on a Dreamcast Castlevania.

"A reliable informant confirms that Konami is working on a Castlevania title for Dreamcast, it has been in the works for five months already! Konami's American development team is handling the game, but nothing beyond that is known."

3. KoF '98, as far as I know, runs on standard NeoGeo hardware in the arcades. It's being ported to both the NeoGeo home units, as well as Dreamcast. The Dreamcast version will have some added story modes and some other fun junk to fill up the 1 Gig CD-ROM. SNK isn't talking about any Dreamcast project beyond KoF, but you can be sure they're working on something.

4. Crystal is currently busy working on Soul Rever: Legacy of Kain for Playstation. They need to wrap up work on this project before even considering starting on Dreamcast project.

5. I'll probably be doing weekly/monthly release lists for the Dreamcast starting with the week of launch. It will be done like the Saturn import release lists, but more consistent.

6. Ack, maybe, but right now I got too much going on to stop and smell the roses; Christ, I still have three more queries to go!

9. MSH wasn't optimized for the 4-megger, so I don't think it does anything for it.

Virtua Fighter 3tb: More Logical Thinking
From Wes Ruscher:

My main concern of now is Sega's Dream Cast and its games. People in my opinion are being too judge mental on the software as of now. Sega came out saying that the power of the DC is 3 times as greater than Model 3. Well now everyone is seeing a non-arcade port of Virtual Fighter 3 and they are being way too fucking skeptical too its power. People need to remember that theese games are 1st generation DC games. The hardware is still new and learning to yield all its powers may still be tricky. Was VF1 arcade perfect when it came to the Saturn. Hell no! But then look at what they did with a year of knowledge on VF2. That game was amazingly awesome. It wasn't arcade perfect but then again the Saturn wasn't even supposed to be up to that task. So people  when VF3 comes out and its not perfect just remember that VF4 or any other model 3 game comes along it will have VF3 for its help to push out those perfect arcade emulates. With time knowledge progresses.

Someone's been taking those smart pills again, good e-mail!

I want my Street Fighter
From Denzil Lamp:

After reading your article on Alpha 3, I was flooded with thoughts of anger, disgust, even assassination attempts! Its bad enough that Saturn was dumped in the U.S., but now I can't even get my gaming fix from Japan! I have waited for ages to play Alpha 3. Now I'm going to have to settle for a hacked up, turd of an excuse, PSX version! I read in your story that in order for a game to be profitable, it has to be on the top 10 charts for weeks. If this is true, how is the gaming industry profitable as a whole? Lots of great games get released, but not too many make it to the top 10. I guess Capcom could also share a little blame. After nickel and diming people to death, buying update after update to its fighting games, people just grew tired of it resulting in slumoed sales. I for one will buy Streetfighter updates till the end of time!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
You read that profitable statement wrong, here's what I said:

"in order for a title to be profitable, it must sustain sales for a long period of time."

I didn't say top ten numbers, just sales, meaning decent sales; only one or two Saturn titles have been able to do this in '98 (Sakura Wars 2, and, um..). You will have one last Street Fighter fix on Saturn: the final Capcom Generation volume is all Street Fighter titles! Hooray!

Ruminations about Dreamcast, etc.
From Loren Smith:

1) Why are you getting your DC from NCS instead of Rage?  I thought they were your import hook-up.  What are the price comparisons?

2) What about Game Cave?  I got XvSF and VS with the 4-megger for just over a hundred from them.  I was very pleased with the speed of delivery and also that when I called before it arrived (being very antsy), they were very professional and gave me the name and number of their mail carrier, along with the tracking number.  The people at the carrier (I forget the name) were also very professional and helpful.

3) You reported last month that a 2D Castlevania game was in the works for DC.  What's all this business I see on IGNDC and elsewhere about a 3D Castlevania?  3D blows.  I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that.  What I mean is, they MUST make a sequel to Symphony of the Night.  If they won't do the damn thing on DC, then...do it on Playstation.  Ulp!  What I mean is...Konami pisses me off.  And make your own damn Contra games!

3b)...uh, anyway, assuming they do develop (or port from N64) a 3D Castlevania, maybe a 2D game could also be made?

4) I must credit J. M. Vargas on his literary stylings.  Keep it up!

5) So Capcom DID announce SFA3!  Oh well, even the best game developer isn't perfect...

6) VF3tb: Thanks a whole bunch to Richard Leadbetter for writing and Fernando for printing!  As a longtime Sega owner, I see all the signs that success is upon them.  However, until DC eats PSX and PSX2, I will be trembling in fear of Sega's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.  I appreciate all of you setting the facts straight, since even though I knew that VF3tb would be awesome, the idea of even slight flaws made me worry.  As a resident of Washington, DC, I view at closehand how the evil Clintonista spin machine (as chronicled by, of all people, liberal Democrat Howie Kurtz in the terrifying bestseller, Spin Cycle) warps truth and I can only imagine that something similar might happen to a DC launch if propaganda based on non-flaws like this one was to flood the marketplace.

7) Back to the controllers...in your opinion, is the reduction to six buttons going to damage the games in some way?  The more recent Capcom games would be very irritating to play under those conditions.  This simply strikes me as unacceptable.  A third party controller with many thousands of buttons will hopefully be published immediately.  Hey, maybe what was discussed the other day, a Saturn controller connector?

8) I'm sorry if I am repeating myself, but do you know anything about planned ports for Soul Calibur?  That would be a great game for Namco to cut its DC teeth on, rather than the abominable Tekken.  Of course, I suppose Tekken 4 will look nice, even if its "gameplay" resembles the rest of the series.

Keep fighting the good fight!

P.S. 9) I hope I didn't offend anyone by bringing that hideous fiend, Politics, into the pure and good realm of video games.  I figured I might be safe by strictly saying something that had been said by a member of a political group about one of his own.  Besides,      J. M. Vargas is already dropping reality bombs here...

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. Well, I pre-ordered from NCS first; neither of the two shops have confirmed a price, but I'm sure it will all be pretty much the same.

2. Your mileage may vary with Game Cave, they are known for high prices, so I can't really recommend them. Sticking with NCS and TheRage will do you just fine, unless you don't mind risking dependability to score a deal.

3. When did I report a 2D Castlevania being in the works for Dreamcast? Show me the story, because I don't remember ever reporting this; I think you're referring to the Sega X rumor about it. Which is just that, a rumor. Konami hasn't confirmed any future plans for Castlevania, or any of their series; heavy speculation is hinting at a Metal Gear Dreamcast title of some sort though. Like everyone else, I'll have to wait and see what happens.

6. Ouch, you live in DC? Just a short thirty minutes or so from where I am at; scary thought no? All Loren has to do is look up my address on InterNIC and... the horror, the horror!

7. People who have played VF3tb at TGS have said that the standard Dreamcast pad makes the game difficult to play; same probably applies to Capcom titles. The immediate fix: the arcade stick, which suits Virtua Fighter and other fighters quite well.

8. Right now any announcement from Namco will do, I just want to see if they're actually serious about developing for Dreamcast (which I think they are). Tekken 4, Ridge Racer, whatever Namco, bring it on!

Virtua Fighter 3tb: Setting it Straight
From Richard Leadbetter:

Hello

I have just got back from Tokyo, so was quite curious to see how the fan sites had covered Dreamcast games. So here is some news for you. It's all a load of shite. VF3 especially is being vilified by people who don't have a clue as to what they are talking about.

I have a great deal of experience with this game since we had the coin-op in the office for a few months. The Dreamcast port is astoundingly good. Unfortunately, people have been getting confused because so far THREE versions of the game have been revealed.

1. Screenshot Edition
This is where the official screenshots have come from. They demonstrate the backgrounds and sheer rendering power of VF3tb's Dreamcast engine. They are not gameplay shots. And they are of an old version.

2. Video Edition
This is the version shown on video at the New Challenge Conference and on video screens at the TGS. People would have camcorded this one... but again, it's an earlier version. Taka looks smaller than Jacky and Shun is taller than Akira!

3. The Playable One
This is the one running on Dreamcast and the subject of my reports on Game Online. Bear in mind that most web reporters would not have gotten in on press day and also that 80,000 people per day crammed into the hall on the public days. I very much doubt that any of these "journalists" would have got more than five minutes on the game. Personally, I played it for an hour after the NCC2 and an hour at TGS. This game is amazing - all the moans about textures, size of characters, 3d backgronds etc are perfectly relevant for the video version, but NOT for the one I played.

Everyone's a expert by the look of it, but I really doubt that most of these guys have actually got a look (or a play) at the "proper" version. Hey ho. The conversion will be stunning, the backgrounds are brilliant, the characters are almost entirely identical to the coin-op's... and basically it's just an ace game.

I have spoken!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
There you have it, the British gaming authority has spoken; now, how about them penalty kicks...

DC in Asia
From Ralf:

Hi there. My names Ralf and I really need the help of someone who is in the know. I know you you receive bucketloads of e-mail daily but if you just help me out a little I would greatly appreciate it. Here's my situation. My sister and her husband are travelling to Spain in December. Along the way they will be stopping in Singapore. I need to know if the Dreamcast will be in Singapore at this point in time and if there is a possibility it could be purchased in the airport itself in a duty free store ( one of those stores where you buy stuff and its 10% cheaper). Also I need to know if its going to be pal or NTSC. If it is pal, will I be able to buy DC games that are released in Australia in the near future. Please give me an answer, I've asked a few sites before and I haven't received any answers. You're my last hope. Thanks.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, as far as I know, the Asian version of Dreamcast will be released in Singapore (English docs, NTSC). Most people think that a SCART cable of some sort will also be available. The Asian system is compatible with all Japanese releases; Auzzie games won't be released until late '99: your system will require modifications to play those. I doubt the Dreamcast will be available at duty free shops, so you'll have to venture into the real world Singapore to pick one up. Good luck, and enjoy Spain!

Saturn RPGs/Hard To Find Games
From Petie Martin:

1) What were the RPGs that came out in the US for Saturn, and of them, which ones were considered very bad? I heard that Virtual Hydlide reaked.

2) If there's a game that is impossible to find, like Saturn Bomberman, am I just SOL, or is there anywhere that will print more copies of the game if I threaten their loved ones?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. While it's true that not that many Saturn RPGs were released, there were enough out there to make out inconvenient for me to go through them all in here. Just checkout the reviews and reader reviews sections and see what's good, and what's not.

2. Well, you're not out of luck, yet. No one will print more legit copies of Saturn games, but you can try to find copies of these rare games. Post in forums, usenet, etc. asking for the titles. Also try out the retailers in our links section, they might have some of the games you're looking for somewhere. Chances are, if you look hard enough, you'll find your games.

Street Fighter 3 Alpha
From Rik:

Hello,

I am very devastated about the news. But after reading capcom's interview in last month's sega saturn magazine, they did clearly state that it would be saturn's last game, and also they will continue to release games until april '99. People did not make the assumption based on the psx release but on this interview. I remember for the Super Famicom Capcom released a new game called Rockman and Forte just this year, and surely the Super Famicom market has been dead for more than a year now. Also, I don't expect the saturn market in japan to compleletly disappear after november 27th, it is still running a distant 2nd, but still 2nd in the market place ahead of the Big N.

Thanks for reading the mail, and the great WEBSITE.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I stand correct, I guess someone at Capcom did announce the game on the record. Kind of funny, because the people I've talked to (mainly journalists who went to TGS) kept on insisting Capcom never announced the game; they eventually convinced me they were right, silly me! Anyhow, that still doesn't take away from the fact that the game wasn't at the show and that it wasn't in Capcom's TGS '98 brochure.

Wonder Boy
From Hauke Fischer:

Hi,
I just wanted to respond to Chep's questions on the Wonderboy sequel issue.

You're right. The game had a sequel on the Genisis called Wonderboy in Monsterworld, much in the style of Dragon's Trap, except for less transformations. There is only one transformation in the game, turning you into miniboy. It is a good game; it has only one flaw: The final boss is MUCH to hard. The game was even ported to Master System.

There is another sequel called Wonderboy 6, also an action adventure. Unfortunately it only appeared in Japan (I guess we all know that tune by now :-(. Main character of that game is Wonderboy's sister AFAIK. But hey, there's a game missing! Yup there's also an arcade jump and shoot a bit similar to the original Wonderboy. It has that vitality bar. The game is called Wonderboy in Dragon's Lair or something like that. It was also ported to Genisis.

From Spot1:

I was reading the letter in the mailbag section asking about wonderboy 4.  It reminded me of an idea for a game that only a company like Sega could make.  I got the idea after playing Virtua fighter 3 when I was living in Iceland.

There's this guy who makes music using this old synth called a moog; he is basically a one-man group called Joy Electric(you may be asking yourself, "what the hell does this have to do with anything?".....just keep reading.).  A moog is a true synth.  there are no sampled sounds; it's all completely electronic.  If you ever saw that old Disney film Escape to Witch Mountain, you'd know what I'm talking about.  Anyway, a Moog sounds almost exactly like a cleaner version of the sound chip used in the Sega Master System.  Joy Electric is one of my favorite groups because listening to them brings back fond memories when the graphics of games were merely the foundation--and our imagination was the true processor.  That's what prompted the general idea Žfor this game, which I named Nostalgia(having nothing to do with the Japanese Sega CD game).

Playing those old games on a pc with emulation software got me thinking.  Part of the reason games like that(Wonderboy 2, Phantasy Star, Y's, Mario, Goonies, etc.) were so enjoyable was that the graphics were too primitive to truly create a world, as many games seem to nowadays.  Almost without conscious thought, the imagination kicked in and aided in creating that world for us.   Anyway, here's my idea.  This was origionally planned to be a game for the Arcade, because only the model 3 hardware could handle something like this(at the time).  Also, I wish the arcade companies would move back in the direction of action games(like Shadow Dancer) and adventure games(like Cadash and Willow).  It would take a monumental game like Nostalgia to do it.

I thought the perfect character for a game like this would be Wonder Boy.  He has a history, and I think a lot of older gamers would be warmly familiar to him(not sure about his status in the eyes of the Japanese, I'd have to check up on it).  Anyway, when the game starts out, everything is flat.  Much the same way Parappa is--everything looks like a cardboard cutout.  However, unlike Parappa, EVERYTHING would be flat.  The backgrounds, the characers, the Sun, and everything else.  I'm currently working on my design degree in college, so I'm a very visual, ambience-conscious person.  Everything would look like an old arcade game: very pastel, Very Wonder Boy 2-esque.  But it would be in 3-d, and you could see that by the perspective.  But everything would be flat.  And of course the music would have that moog sound I'm talking about--high fidelity, with possibly some modern drum sounds, but with that nostalgic, 8-bit feel to it.

As the game progresses, the game begins to have more depth.  The music gragually gets better as you reach the higher levels, and more 3-d elements are introduced.  By the time the game reaches the final stage, we have orchestrated BGM with fully fleshed out, cartoony, 3-d characters, enemies and BG's.

As you can see, it's all a bunch of pipe dream bullshit.  I gave up on the idea of becoming a videogame designer when I was in the 8th grade, partly due to the fact that computers were replacing hand-drawn art everywhere, especially in videogames.  Also partly due to the fact that I liked the quality and style of the Japanese games, and companies like Shiny, Naughty dog, and Ubi Soft weren't around.  And have you ever heard of an american videogame designer making games for a Japanese company(Square aside)?  Exactly.  So I've set more modest, more easily attainable goals for myself.  I'm going to be the  American equivelant of Hayao Miyazaki.  :D

Keep up the excellent work.  The only other online videogame site I go to is GameFan Online, and you have better sources, and update more frequently.  Go figure....PS.  Are you importing your Dreamcast?  and which import company are you going through(if any)?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Thanks for the details, and rambling pipe dreams, it's what the mailbag is all about! And yes, my DC is already reserved with NCS!

Angry Rant of the Day
From Jay Dillon:

I would appreciate if somebody would forward me the E@mail address of someone at Sega so that I can give them a piece of my mind. Every time I get a new import game I get upset at the fact that these people abandoned us with allot of good games to go yet. Unfair is an understatement, when describing this situation. Sega Lost I believe hundreds of thousands As much as I don't like the attitude that Sega has taken toward it's customers I am a believer in "the benefit of the doubt". I have analyzed the current state of the industry and I think that now is a great time to introduce the Dreamcast. Sega is really doing their homework and I believe that it is going to pay off. Someone really had their thinking cap on when they brainstormed the Naomi arcade board. I just read somewhere that Sega is going to be in business with Web TV for online gaming. I expected that they would since they are in bed with Microsoft and Web TV is one of Microsoft's subsidiaries. I seems to me as if Sega of America and Sega Ltd. are both collaborating a lot  more these days than they used to, and I mean that in a good way.

I just read Chris Johnstons [from VGS] first hands on impressions with the Dreamcast  hardware, and games presented at the Tokyo Show.  He loved the controller ergonomics and had plenty of positive things to say about the system in general. He did however have a lack of good things to say about the games in their preliminary stages. In fact the only games that he could say anything I wanted to hear about was Virtua Fighter 3tb and Sonic Adventure of course. I understand that these are only preliminary comments but damn, D-day is only a month away in Japan.  The only game to be released at system launch time is VFtb that anybody had anything good to say about. Sega, I think need's to put a stricter hold on what comes out on the DC. We all know that bad games can kill a system very easily. The DC is too powerful to have any shovel ware tarnish it's high-powered image. I don't need any of those good for nothing Sega bashers getting any rocks to throw at me. I plan to evangelize the Dreamcast to the fullest and all I want to do is be able to show off a slew of outrageous games. Hopefully Sega and the third parties can iron out any ruff edges on these games before they are released. I want the dreamcast to be a world wide success, and good software is the most important part of that. I also want to tell you that I LOVE YOUR SITE. I think that all of you guys do a damn good job of reporting what's going on in the industry from a fair and rationale perspective.

Thank You, Your good friend Jay

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
First of all, thanks for the e-mail and your kind words; they're appreciated.

As for your concerns about the Dreamcast's launch, I think you're right; importers of the machine might be disappointed by some of the early games. Thing is, in Japan, most people won't care what the launch titles look like: as long as they play fine they'll be happy. Take a look at the Saturn launch and Virtua Fighter. The port was horrible, glitchy, etc., but it played fine. The game sold one to one with the system; the Saturn and Playstation were pretty much tied for market share. Morale of the story: Sega knows what it's doing for the Japanese launch, they're doing what they need to do to be successful there. When it comes to the US launch, a different strategy will have to be employed; let's hope Sega of America executes.

Saturn Controllers on DC?
From Caliburn:

I heard that Sega is planning a converter device for allowing SS controllers to be used on the DC. Is it true?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Nothing confirmed yet, but I suppose it could happen. Don't see any technical reason why Saturn devices couldn't work on Dreamcast, but then again, I'm not an engineer. It would certainly be a nice gesture on Sega's part of a converter did come out...

Gaming Speculation
From Loren Smith:

1) to FMulder, who suggested that the Soul Edge series     was better than VF, I find that to be a     very interesting comparison.  I have always thought     that the two games were fairly alike compared to     other 3D fighters.  However, I feel there can be no     realistic comparison of depth-of-gameplay.     Soul Edge is kind of like Virtua Fighter 1.5,     as in, deeper than the first but hardly the second     or (slight chuckle) Megamix.  VF3, naturally, is     in a vast universe all its own.

Soul Edge has GREAT features, however, from     the storyline (some of it, anyway) to the music,     which is perhaps the best of any fighter (save     Cinder's theme from Killer Instinct), to Edge Master     Mode.

As for Soul Calibur, has anyone really played it enough     to know yet?  I am skeptical that it has improved     that much (certainly the graphics are still childish scrawl     compared to Model 3), however, I am certain that it     still towers over its deformed half-brother, the Tekken     series.  Oh well, here's hoping it winds up on DC.

2) J.M. Vargas has an excellent point about cheap games.     If anyone who has not played Powerslave is reading,     go find that damn game NOW and play it.  Dare I     suggest heresy by supposing that the PSX version     might be purchased if you can't find the Saturn one?     Play that damn game and pray for Powerslave 2.     Lobotomy rules!  Saturn Duke and Quake are     other excellent examples of their talent (oh, if only     Doom and Hexen had been given Lobotomies...)

I can't find MSH anywhere!  Well, one place had it for     $50, but that doesn't count. Oh, are the tales of     slowdown true?  Is it better with or  without the cart?

By the way, you write great reviews.  Did you ever     do one for the excellent movie-on-wheels Solar Eclipse?     I know you are big on 3DO adaptations.

3) Phatasy Star V.  Speak out on this matter.

4) when MSHvSF?

5) when SFA3?

6) when they bring Shining Force III 2 & 3 over here? nownownow!

7) not that it bothers me overlymuch, but as I stated in my email     a week or so ago, I am a 21 year-old male college graduate.     I'm not gay when I call you "the man," merely complimenting     you on a well-run website.     Actually, when I was applying to colleges, my Congressman,     James P. Moran (D-Virginia), wrote saying that he would like     to sponsor me for the Naval Academy, a Ms. Loren A. Smith.     This got better a month later, when I was solicited by an all-girls     school.  Anyway, Lauren=female, Loren=male.

8) As a fighting game fan, this business of only four thumb buttons angers     me greatly.  How many buttons are believed/known to be on the     control total?  Also,

9) any word yet on an additional controller, perhaps     a third party one, that would somehow compensate for Sega's mighty     slap in the face of Capcom and fans?

Thanks for listening!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Ack, sorry for calling you a girl last time, well, let me try to answer some of these questions.

3. Rumors, rumors, rumors. There's nothing anywhere near concrete on the game, at least that I have heard. If it happens, it will be 3D, but there's not that much else to go on..

4. October 23rd.

5. Never, read today's news.

6. Never.

7. Again, sorry about that.

8/9. Did you look at some of TGS coverage? Sega's releasing an arcade stick at launch, which should be great for fighters! The standard pad has four on the face, and two triggers, the arcade stick has six on the face and no triggers (it's an arcade stick!).

Gaming In Hell
From jsttn@concentric.net:

Just wanted to drop a line about this article.  I think it's a great idea to wake some of us to the fact that not every one is as blessed as we are in general in America.  Whereas we may bitch when the price of gas goes up, we ought to be thankful we can even afford to have a car.  Looking forward to parts 2-4, and wouldn't mind pieces done on other parts of the world .

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Yep, Vargas did a great job on it (save a few spelling errors), hey, it might prompt me to do one about gaming in Argentina!

A Basic Question
From Shayne L Pinnace:

About the Game Basic: Can you make your own videogames with this? If so, do you need the computer you wrote the game on to play it or does it make a disc?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Something tells me you didn't read the Game Basic FAQ before sending this e-mail. If you have genuine interest in the product, try doing some damn research before sending e-mails. Ack, here's an excerpt from the FAQ:

"The Game Basic or Saturn Basic is a programming language for the Sega Saturn by ASCII/Bits Laboratory/ESP Inc. and is based on BASIC..."

Head on over to the Game Basic Site for the full story.

SC on DC?
From FMulder:

Since Namco's teamed up with Sega we can assume they're only using the Dreamcast as a stopgap before the PSX2 comes or just to get the Noami hardware. But everyones always saying "I beat Tekken 4 is coming to the DC" but I want to know is if Soul Calibur is coming. That games kicks the crap out of every Vitrua Fighter and Tekken ever.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Magic crystal ball says, "How the hell should I know? If anything develops, it would be posted in the news section."

Crystal balls these days, no manners, sigh, I remember in the old days those balls would never talk back to you like that...

Wonder Boy!
From Cshep:

Hi, I've been wondering for a while now, was a sequel to Wonderboy 3, the Dragon Trap ever made?  If so, how many?  I used to love that series back in the good old days of Sega Master System.  I think it would make a cool 3D game on Dreamcast... and if you could play on networks...

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Someone told me Wonder Boy 4 was released on the Genny/MegaDrive, but I'm no so sure as to the "official" name; any Wonder Boy fans want to help me out? As for a Dreamcast version, ouch, I wouldn't count on it. Sorry.

Hot Shot, Hot Short? What?!
From Link:

Hello, shot and to the point: Any chance that new Indianan jones game will be coming to Dreamcast?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, Lucas Arts is a Dreamcast developer (according to many sources who know this kind of stuff), so it is a possibility. Of course, I'd rather Lucas work on a Dreamcast exclusive game from scratch than port a PC title, wouldn't you?

Dreamcast or PC?
From Mr. Brown:

I was recently debating whether i should save up for a computer, or  buy myself a Dreamcast.  My computer would have all of the fancy graphics cards and such and there are a couple of great games for the pc as well, but the Dreamcast's graphics are not to shabby either..... So, what i was wondering is, will the Dreamcast get such games as Rainbow Six or Vigilance....  I guess it would aid in my search for the right decision PC vs. Console, the everlasting battle.  Thanks.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Depends, will you be buying this PC solely for gaming, or for online and other uses as well? What games interest you on Dreamcast?

My advice would be to buy the system/console not for the games that might come out, but for the games that are out. If Sonic, VF3, and Rally are enough to please you, then by all means by a Dreamcast. If that's not enough yet, then wait until more games you want come out.

Down to the PC vs. Console debate, there's no right answer. Basically, if you're an enthusiast gamer, you need both. The PC for online, graphics editing, word processing, and other uses, the consoles for the console exclusive games (Mario, Sonic, etc.). Buying a console based on "expected" PC ports is just plain silly. Use your head, make your own decisions: you're the person who's in the best position to analyze the situation, after all, it is your purchase. Go with what feels right, and I'm sure you'll have a good time.

Cool Dreamcast
From Rick:

Cool Boarders for Dreamcast?   The Playstation game?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Yep. The creators of the series (UEP) have moved on from Playstation development to Dreamcast work. Cool Boarders 3 will probably be the last Playstation Boarders title (CB3 isn't even handled by UEP, it's a 989 Studios production). Dreamcast Cool Boarders is still way early, but from what was shown at TGS '98 looks promising. Hey, not every Playstation game is owned by Sony you know.

Sega's Quick Development
From Arden:

On October 9, you guys showed 5 pics of Sega Rally 2 that looked no where close than its arcade counterpart and you guys said that those pics were in early beta version.  Later that day, you guys updated with more Sega Rally 2 pics...but this time the pics have that arcade-style with them.  And I think it's impossible for Sega to make that big graphical change just in one day. Is it possible that you guys just posted the wrong pics the first time and those pics WERE probably from the PC?  Those 5 pics scared me...I thought Sega Rally 2 wouldn't look good on Dreamcast.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
No, they're both from Dreamcast. The first images came from a way early build, the second batch from the TGS '98 build of the game. Just because the images were released one day apart doesn't mean the builds were compiled one day apart. That said, those TGS stills could be deceiving; people who have seen Rally 2 DC in motion (TGS tape footage) said the game looks like Voodoo 2 PC graphics (i.e. nowhere near Model 3 quality).

Sonic's Enemies
From Weber:

I've seen almost all the Sonic Adventure movies and one thing keeps on buggin me, I can't see Sonic fighting all the regular badies on a regular basis. Remember encountering over 50 badies on each level of each stage in Sonic 1. I hope there are more than just stage bosses, because the use of bad guys is the key to the Sonic series. I more than welcome the puzzles and huge bosses i.e. the whale(awesome), but I am praying there are levels full of badies just waiting to kill me, Please say they'll be there!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
This actually worries me too, but not having played the game, I can't really comment, just restate what others have said. Every report from TGS says that the game play is classic Sonic, so I assume this means the baddies are in. Kind of funny that they're not in the images all that much; we'll have to wait until November 27th to know for sure.

DC Save Games
From Leon Thomas:

One of the most overlooked yet very useful features of the Saturn was the internal RAM. Pricy and sometimes unreliable memory cards just aren't doing it for me. Any word on possible internal RAM for the Dreamcast?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Internal save space for Dreamcast? No way. Sega is really pushing the VM units, so they'll want to make sure you buy one. It's a shame too, cause the Saturn's internal RAM was nice. Oh well.

More Questions, More Answers
From Loren Smith:

1) Colin Duffy.  Back off of Powerslave, tuffguy.  That game kicks ass!     And not just because of Deathtank.  Great music, loved that     Egyptian Indiana Jones theme, the M-60, the levels were awesome,     the graphics were damn respectable, especially at the time, and     so forth.

It is too bad they didn't have a shotgun, though.  The rest of the weapons     ruled.  As for the use of sprites, that's your opinion.  Until Unreal,     and even still, the 3D characters do not look all that impressive.     I'll always take some well-drawn (and they were fairly good,     especially the wolf-women and that disgusting insect-woman boss).

1a) Fernando, this guy has it right about Lobotomy.  They are the best!        What is the scoop on their upcoming projects especially...

    1b) Powerslave 2 and...

    1c) More Deathtank!

2) Would you please consider changing the letters page to regular/bold from     italics/regular on question/answer?  Reading italics sucks.

3) MSHvSF in a few weeks.  SFA3 this Christmas.  Am I right about that,     and can we expect any more for Saturn?

4) For the DC, will any of these come souped up, or will they pick right up     where the Saturn leaves off with SFIII:2i, MvC, and SFEX2?

5) You haven't said a word about KoF collection.  Where's the report, the     review?

6) Do you know anything about Star Gladiator 2?

You are the man, Fernando.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. Lobotomy, eh? Been in touch with Dan Jevons (designer there) on and off the past few weeks and he let me in on some of the stuff they're working on/considering. They need to wrap up their N64 gambling title, Ceaser's Palace 64; should ship first quarter '99 (watch out for it, my namesake will be in it, wooo!). After that, it's onto next-generation development, but nothing the company can talk about pubilicly at the moment.

2. Okay, I'll consider it, it's probably something I should do for when the redesign launches. That is, if it ever launches, the design guy is kind of stalling on it; doubtful we'll make the DC launch with it. More than worth the wait though, it's looking great right now.

3. Don't forget the Capcom Generation titles, but, um after the last of those ship, it's pretty much over for Capcom on Saturn.

4. No idea on what Capcom plans for 2D titles on Dreamcast. They're working on Biohazard: Code Veronica, and some mini-rpg titles. We'll have to wait and see unfortunetly.

5. I'm not a big fighting game fan, and I don't really have the cash for it right now; draw your own conclusions.

6. It's an arcade game by Capcom, it's been out for awhile, and it won't be coming to Dreamcast. Heh.

The man eh? Well, I try to do my best. Just wondering Loren, you are female right? That makes you what, the only female reader of SegaNet to actually write in. Congrats, I think, hum.. need sleep.

Bargain Bin Shopping
From J.M. Vargas:

Now it's the time to get cheap Saturn software from American retailers and specialty stores before they are buried in an Arizona ditch; not the one's everyone should already have in their collection ("VF2", "Panzer" trilogy, "Guardian Heroes", etc.), but the one's that snuck under the radar because of a saturated 32-bit market.  I recently got "Dark Savior", a game I remember passing back in 1996 because there were other better games worth my $50; for $20 it was one of the better buys I've made in recent months, and there are dozens like out still available on the Saturn.  "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo" for $20 anyone? Can you, beloved SegaNet webmaster, share with us what UNDERHYPED and SLEEPER Saturn games we should be on the lookout before their domestic supplies dindle to nothing (personal preferences)?  I'm on the lookout for "Legend of Oasis" and "Marvel Super Heroes" (good luck!) since they seem attractive 'B' titles worth $20 and a permanent space in my Saturn shelf.  Thanks for answering and God bless the United States of America (??!!).

P.D.: Next week I will be posting a series of editorials on SegaNet about the state of gaming on a third-world country, and the prospects of Dreamcast in the Latin America region.  Pending approval from the beloved webmaster (did I mention Maradona is worshipped in my household morning/noon/night??!! :-P), I cordially invite you to check them out and see what the tastes of fellow gamers in under-developed nations are compared with us, wealthy Yankee capitalists.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Sleep, what, uhm. Oh yeah, e-mails. Hum, bargain bin Saturn titles, well, I haven't been able to find much around here, so I don't know what I would reccomend. Basically, if you something cheap, and it looks halfway fun, pick it up. If you have doubts about something, read the reviews on the site (half of which are written by you it seems). Ack, I really need to stop doing the mailbag last... That's it, I'll do the rest of the mailbag on Monday. Um, sorry!
