Compatibility Questions
From Thomas S:

Hey Fernando,
I would like to start out by saying, that you have the best Dreamcast news and previews site on the net. I visit your site every day to read the updates, and enjoy reading your editorials. I have some questions regarding the DC, and it would be much appreciated if you could answer them.

First, I am probably going to import a Dreamcast( just because I have played out my Saturn, and will never purchase any console made by nintendo or sony), I wanted to know what I will need to purchase in addition to the console and games. Will I need a power converter of some sort, or a video input converter? Will American peripherals work with the Japanese system, as well as the japanese modem? I have never been to a foreign country, and know next to nothing about their electrical or phone systems. If you are able to answer any of these questions, it would be very helpful.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this sort of question, well, let's just say I wouldn't care about the Dreamcast's incredibly high import price.

Since the Japanese phone and video standards are pretty similar to the one's we have in the USA, you will not need any additional hardware to make your import Dreamcast work. It will plug in fine, and it will hook up to your TV's A/V jacks just as well.

The modem is still a question mark I'm afraid. If Sega allows Dreamcast users to use whatever ISP we wish, then yes, you'll be able to use the Dreamcast Japanese modem with no trouble at all. If, on the other hand, Sega makes all Dreamcast owners use their custom internet service, we'll be in a load of trouble. Don't know if this will make you feel any better, but Japanese Netlink's work fine in the USA.

Looking For A Saturn!!
From Mark Pereira:

This probably sounds more like a FAQ than an e-mail but please respond! Where can i find a Saturn? I have checked out all majour and minor retailers in my PROVINCE {ontario}Even SoA! Each of them said "Nope, but we have some games!". Now with this in mind i began to wonder, why did saturn fail if there's no more systems left? Can you answer this? and i have another question, Could you plese FIND ME SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO SELL THERE SATURN {though thats probably impossible}, i f i don't get one i'll never have the privillage to play "Panzar Dragoon Saga", "Steep Slope Sliders", and "Grandia"!

HEAVENS NO!!!!

p.s.plese hurry with the release of the dreamcast comming soon the saturn seems to be selling like hotcakes! {2 used were in this morning at Electronic Boutique and within an hour, during working/school day, they were both GONE!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I'll tell you what I tell everyone who wants to buy a Sega product:

Check the retailers in SegaNet's link section - call them, e-mail them, get them to sell you what you want.

Post in the forum, in usenet, and in auction websites.

Call all your local shops.

If that doesn't turn up a Saturn, then you can have mine for 500 USD... hahaha!

Dreamcast Is So Close I Can Smell It
From Albert Robles:

Greetings Mr. Mosquera,

Wow, I'd like to express my appreciation for allowing my thoughts on HOTD2 and Spikeout to appear on the net. I got a real kick out of it and it only shows that some sites can be as respectful to their readers as others. Anyways, I was meaning to get my first review out to you but I've been swamped with work. Damn Zelda gets launched tommorro and that'll be hell on earth down at the store. Lets hope I get that done soon...

I noticed your mailbag inquiry asking where everyone is getting their dreamcast from. Well, I for one am getting mine ON SUNDAY. It's going to take a disaster of major proportions to stop my DC from arriving late. Where am I getting it? Well, I did have to make a deal with the devil at a local import shop. I'm not going to spell out any names, but most of my colleagues at work in EB were shocked to know that I had spent 400 dollars. Even I looked at myself and said "400 dollars?!" But after a week of torment, I'm actually glad I bought it at that price. Most import shops (namely NCS) are quoting prices in the 600-800 range. That just makes my $400 seem like a sale price. My importer flew to Japan last week and is due in on Sunday night. As far as I know, he DOES have units secure in Japan and I am 1 of 5 DC's that he is bringing back. I paid full price in cash up front and I have few doubts into whether or not I'm getting one. If I didn't get one, my body will be found on my driveway after lunging out of my second story window. I am eager to send in my thoughts on the DC and the games I'm getting with it (VF3 only unfortunately).

And finally, the highly criticized Marty Chinn of Gaming Age stopped by our EB the other day and gave us a copy of his Live footage of the Tokyo Game Show '98. I recommend that you take a look at it because it does contain the most DC coverage on tape anywhere. It even has an incredibly long segment on Sonic Adventure which is done in direct feed. I still cant stop watching this tape because it's incredible to watch it on TV rather than a problematic Quicktime. Other titles include Frame Gride, the over criticized Geist force, VF3, PEn Pen, Blue Stinger, Sega Rally 2, & several more. I was wondering if you wanted to hear additional thoughts on what I saw in the footage? Happy Gaming.

Iceman

6 days and counting...

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Heya Albert, I loved those initial impressions you sent in on HOTD 2 and Spike Out - I've said it once and I'll say it again: you readers make SegaNet what it is, this page wouldn't be half as fun without your links, your e-mails, the forum, reader reviews, and contributions like yours.

400 USD for a launch Dreamcast is a steal right now, good job on scoring that! Crap, it looks like most "gotta have it" sort of folks will be getting stuck with a 600 dollar bill... it's nuts! I'm still flip-flopping on what to do, maybe I'll have to make do with one of you guys making me a tape of VF3tb and Project Berkley until the Dreamcast price comes down. Which reminds me, if anyone (including you Albert) is 100% they'll get a Dreamcast next week, please send me an e-mail; I have a few favors to ask of you guys.

As for the offer on your thoughts on Marty's tape, well, that would make a fine mailbag contribution but I don't think I'll post that sort of thing in the news page. Most of us have had a shot to take a look at the Dreamcast videos for ourselves and have already drawn our own conclusions.

Thanks for all your help thus far, I appreciate it.

DC Hardware Issues
From Rodan:

Hi, I'd like to give some thoughts on some hardware issues regarding the DC. First off, the Voodoo 3 sounds like an incredible piece of hardware. The raw hardware sounds more powerful than the DC, but that doesent make it better. Since its a PC card, it won't be used as fully as the DC hardware will be. I think that despite Voodoo3's muscle, we won't see a game for it that is as good (graphically) as a DC game until sometime in 2000. As for the PlayStation 2, it will almost definately be more powerful than the DC. I think this will create an interesting hardware war. Sony will be saying how great their hardware is, and SEGA will be pointing to all the great games already out for the DC. Sounds kinda like the PSX-N64 hardware war of the last couple of years doesent it? And we all know who came out on top of that battle. Anyway, here's my hardware-related question. The DC has a expansion port, could it be used for a RAM pack a-la Nintendo? I think a real expansion (like the 32X or 64DD) is suicide, but I think Nintendo will do real will with the RAM pack. If they do, isn't it likely that SEGA will follow suit three of four years down the road? Thanks for listening and keep up the great work!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
That's an interesting question... Sega has said many times that the Dreamcast is fully scalable - so if the need comes for an upgrade it can be done (like add another Power VR 2 chip, like the Naomi is capable of). Here's what Neil Robinson (SoA's director of developer technical support) said in an interview with GameCenter:

GC: Will it be possible to pop a RAM pack into the system if the need should arise?

N. R.: We've given ourselves a lot of flexibility. We gave the system 16MB RAM with 8MB of texture memory. PC users might scoff at that, but this is the most RAM console developers have ever had at their disposal. You can take any N64 game and we can fit the whole thing in our video memory. But to answer your question, we've given the idea of additional RAM thought in the design of the system architecture. We just don't think it will be necessary.

Take that as you will.

More on GD-ROM
From Gareth Handa:

Hi,

I mean that this software will let you format a CD-R into over 1Gb. It is fairly new and has only been properly available for about 5 months.

The reason why PC games companies don't use the 1Gb of space is because the current CD-ROM's are not capable of being formatted this way.

They also could not use it because older drive readers like under 16x will not read the 1Gb format, however 20x+ will read them just fine, so will DVD drives!

Remember CD-R (Home USE) writing and CD-ROM (Commercial Use) writing are very different!

The Dreamcast drive has been configured to use Sega's 1Gb + discs as well as standard 650Mb Discs.

This 1Gb way for PC's is only designed for hard drive backup and file backup! However as Dreamcast games become available then people will be able to copy them, which I think is not right!

My point is that Sega should have designed a better way of writing their CD's or GD's as they call it. People will be able to copy games and that will push the price up for me when buying them!

OK Sega will hopefully put some sort of protection on their CD's just like Saturn, but people will always get around it this way.

If Sega made them DVD's, then people would find it difficult to copy as DVD-R's are very very expensive and are hard to copy!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, if this is the case, then folks who want to make copies of Dreamcast games will need to purchase the special GD-ROM media, media which is sure to be more expensive than simple old CDRs. And who says that the media is going to be widely available? Believe me, Sega knows that piracy is a problem, they looked at the PSX scene, and they're doing what they feel is best to prevent that from happening with Dreamcast. Chances are that the Dreamcast will offer the best copy protection to date... which still doesn't mean it won't be defeated. It's a lose lose situation my friend.

Where WAS Waldo (when he wrote that)?
From Tactic Yakuza:

Man, oh man.......
What was the deal with David Waldo's Dreamcast editorial. Am I the only one feeling dizzy after reading it? If he's trying to get a spot on the "segaNet Team", I wish him all the luck in the world...but that editorial was just plain painful to read. People really need to do a bit more research before having their stuff published on the Web. It was stuffed full of misinformantion and contradictions. The saturn debuted for "about $500"? Where was that? The Saturn, PSX, and N64 released almost simultaneously in fall '96? Huh? Um, not quite. The NES was apparently superior to the SMS in most respects hardware-wise (according to him), although he admits to not really knowing the specs. No kidding. Then, after explaining how the Genesis was the first 16-bit system on the market, and the SNES came out later with superior hardware and killed the Genny, he later insists that the DC is in a unique position, because previously Sega and Nintendo released all their systems at the same time. Huh? Huh??? That's just the tip of the ice berg, and my head hurts just thinking about it. Doesn't he realize that it's stuff like this that creates a bunch of gaming know-it-alls who actually know nothing, because they hop around the Net reading error-filled (though unbeknownst to them) information. I'm not trying to rip him, but please people--let's be a bit more careful about what we write (especially if it's supposed to serve as an example of the thoroughness of the staff-hopeful). I know it's only an 'editorial', but using obvious false facts in your piece renders your whole opinion "thoughtless".

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
There were other mistakes as well... let's just say that the fact that I took the piece down speaks for itself.

The Truth Behind SegaCon!
From The Truth Behind SegaCon!:

Fernando,

Here, here! I'm glad that SOMEONE out there finally posted the truth about SegaCon. Having dealt with Paul before, having been asked for time and money, it warms my jaded heart to see someone educating the masses in denial. THe number of people posting to Paul's website about how "thiz site rulez!" and "r0ck 0n man!" and other such commentary astounds me.

On another note, Paul has made mention several times (including on his site) about how he has received promotional items from various companies, etc. Do you believe this to be the case? If so, what do you think he'll do with it? What will he do with the monies received from unsuspecting Con-goes who have already bought their tickets?

Ah well, enough of that. Thanks for publicly stating what many of us have been thinking ever since the August. Regards,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
It's sad, it really is, that such a great concept is being dragged through the mud by an unorganized and uncoordinated individual. I think I said everything I wanted to say on the matter in the news article, all money issues should be addressed to Paul, I'm in no position to speculate... *cough* screwed *cough*

DC In USA
From NigHTs1000@aol.com:

when exactly is it gonna come out in the US...dont tell me this time next year...

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
November 23, 2001 - My psychic guarantees it!

SegaCon Hoax or Happening?
From Ashby Herman:

I thought I read somewhere that you were going to help with it and then dropped out. I'm hoping you may have some info though. The con is to be Dec 5-6 but as yet no convention site is announced. Also no updates to segacon.com since early Nov. and the guy will not return my e-mails.

Have you heard anything?Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I quit the project when:

-I realized I couldn't make the then planned summer date.
-I understood how unorganized things were at the time.

Sadly, I would have to advice most folks to NOT make plans to attend if you have to go out of your way to get there. If you live in the area, than fine, drop by and see if it's set up, but as it stands now...

The SegaCon team has let down a lot of people many times already, I hope for the best, and wish that things go smoothly, but I have a hard time telling people to drive to NC with the track record the 'Con has had so far.

Square on Dreamcast
From RockBot5@aol.com:

Ok I want to ask one question and that is all. Why doesnt Sega try to get Squaresoft tp make games for them? I mean i have already heard reaports of Grandia 2 coming to Dreamcast as well as Sukioden 3!! If they singed with Square that would almost complete the domination factor in Japan wouldn't it? Not to mention that games like FF9 Grandia 2 and Sukiosen 3 would do great in the US. So please answer this question and tell me whether or not Sega is trying to get Square or not. If they do sing them it will undoubtedly end the reing of the Playstation. If they can't sign Square then they will still dominate but not as bad. So what are ur thoughts on this subject?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Ack, and people wonder why AOL has a less than stellar rep on the net...

Grandia 2 is confirmed for Dreamcast, pictures have been available for about a month now. I haven't heard anything about Konami bringing Suidoken to Dreamcast, mind telling me where you got this little tidbit from?

Square, Square, they make the RPG world go 'round. Since you haven't read the news all that carefully I'll give you the scoop right here: Sega is in fact pursuing Square, quite actively if you believe the reports that have surfaced on many websites (GameFan for one). Square currently has Dreamcast development kits and is evaluating the technology; this means that Square might just be finding out what Dreamcast is all about, or that they have a genuine interest in developing for Dreamcast. We'll see what happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Final Fantasy on Dreamcast.

BTW: and this goes out to everyone, in the future, spellcheck your e-mails - you'll look better, and SegaNet's readers in general will look better.

JP Reviews of DC Games
From Caliburn:

Hi to all,
I guess everyone may have read the 1st reviews report on DC games. It is rather disheartening. 3 out of 4 games got a mere score of around 6.2 . And, only VF3 got a 9+ . I don't what this shows, but it sort of dampens the DC launch "mood".

Afterall, DC is a new console. Have a look at the PS launch titles some years back, their review scores were incredible. So, I really would expect reviewers to give DC games rather good scores.

Anyway, their opinions are not reflective of how well the 4 games play. We will still have to play all the 4 ,before we can know whether these games are good or not.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I think you're pretty much correct, the reviews in the Japanese publications only reflect the opinions of those specific editors. By posting the reviews of those publications on the site, I was merely giving my readers an early take on how the Japanese press was receiving the Dreamcast launch titles - nothing more, nothing less. The real truth will come when each and everyone of us gets to sit down and play the games for ourselves, after all, you can't judge a game unless you have played it.

X-Men 3D DC?
From Ken Siu-Chong:

Seeing as X-Men 3D for PSX is being delayed until Q3 99, is there any chance there could be a Dreamcast version?

Thanks!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
There's always the chance that a game will be ported to Dreamcast; I mean, pretty much every action-oriented PC game is heading to Sega's console in one shape or another. I'm willing to guarantee that throughout the Dreamcast's life-span, we'll see at least one X-Men licensed game on the system; if not X-Men 3D, some other title...

Policenauts/Snatcher in the US
From Nick:

Fernando,

You run a nice site, and I don't want to come down on you too hard, but your response to Petie's question about Policenauts (no "gh") and Snatcher smacked of Oblomovism to me.

While it's indeed doubtful we'll ever get to see Hideo's masterpieces on these shores, there IS a small but substantial petition drive running to try to get Konami to bring either (or both) of these games here on the PlayStation.

I hope this doesn't sound too combative, but telling people "Don't even bother asking Konami for the English version" is pretty weak. It requires very little time and effort to sign the petition, or even write an email or letter to Konami, as I've done myself. What can you lose? Sitting around and doing nothing while lamenting about the situation is a bigger waste of time then actually signing the damn thing. Do you think we'd have gotten Xenogears without sounding off? Probably not. Sure, the chances that we'll see the games are slight, to say the least, but at least it's hope.

For those interested, the Policenauts and Snatcher petition drive can be found at:

http://homepage.interaccess.com/~dlaatz/

Thanks for your time,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Call me a cynic, but I don't see Konami responding to this petition at all; this isn't the first time gamers have rallied around Policenauts, and we all know how well the first effort went. Let's just face it, Konami is not a company which actively listens to its fans, at least not here in the states. Snatcher has already been released, on the Sega CD - if you want it so badly, play it there. Policenauts has long been scrapped from Konami's possible releases; it's over, live with it and move on.

GD-ROM
From Gareth Handa:

Hi,

I have just read you article about the Sega Dreamcast GD-ROM drive.

The GD discs used on dreamcast are standard CD's but written in a special way. The same way can be used by CD-writers using a software called packet CD. This software formats the CD so it can hold up to 1.2Gb worth of information. All Sega have done is made the dreamcast capable of using these CD's that are formatted for 1.2Gb use by SEA. Obviously not CD-R disc's but their own made ones. My point is that Sea have not designed their own type of CD, they are just using an old method!

If you look carefully Sego's early CD-ROM discs were just standard CD-R discs when they were on demonstration!

I am sure Sea will put copy protection on their CD-ROM discs still, so least the prices of games wont go up to counteract. Which I really hate.

Sega should have gone with DVD so people could not copy games that easily!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Wait a minute, I don't quite understand what you're saying; are you telling me that the CD writing software known as "Packet CD" formats the CD-ROMs for 1 gig use, or that the manufacturer of the CDs formats the disc for the gig usage?

If the Dreamcast CDs are just normal CDs formatted differently, then why aren't all CDs and CD-Rs formatted for 1 gig? Doesn't make any sense to me; if this technology is so easy to employ as you make it sound, then surely PC users would be using it. Heck, I know I'd kill for a gig of writing space on my CDs.

I think a detailed explanation is in order here...

Sonic Adventure Q's
From Colin:

Hello,

It's me again. But instead of asking about first-person shooters, this time I'm going to reeaaaally annoying and ask you questions you just *don't* know the answer to, mainly about Sonic Adventure.

1:) What are the possibilities, after hearing the new SA TV ads, of SoA employing good voice actors to play Sonic and Co. in SA? I mean, they have to be as good as the Japanese ones... they rock!

2:) What are the chances of Sonic Team releasing the SA soundtrack in the UK?

3:) Do you know if the different theme tunes belonging to each character play as you play as them?

4:) Which will be better: PS2 or Dreamcast? (HAHAHAHAHAAhehhahahaahheeeheeheeheehehehehehee! I'm so evil).

Ta very much,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Questions I don't know how to answer, man, that's just like the entire mailbag - piece of cake!

1. I would hope Sega goes all out with the translation of SA and hires some good actors. Rumor has it that a new Sonic cartoon will start airing in the US, so perhaps the folks who are doing the voice acting for that will lend a hand. Maybe Sega will do us all a favor and go the Panzer Dragoon Saga route: subtitles!

2. Well, the chances of the Sonic music CD showing up in the UK are nil right now... maybe in '99 when the release of the system will make for more hype towards the Sonic franchise.

3. Um, I think that's the idea... the main theme for each character plays while you play as that character (at least once I would guess).

4. Bah, that's online with the questions asking what I think about the Voodoo 3 and Dreamcast. I mean, I haven't played any of these systems, Playstation 2 hasn't even been announced - do I need to go on? As far as V3 goes, it will be nice for Quake 3 and the like, but it still won't be the same as a console.

For the record, I own a Voodoo 2 and enjoy it for what it is.

DOA PSX | Snatcher
From Petie Martin:

Wow, I can't believe you're a student and have time to run this web site. I'm a student and have little time to do much of anything. I have even more respect for you now! Thanks for keeping the site updated like you do.

Two things:

1)I have read here several times about people destroying PlayStations for fun/ for photo ops and I'd like to say to those people that when you do that you destroy a $129 system that a lot of people would love to have but can't afford. I'd urge anyone who has a hankerin' to maim their PSX to buy a broken one off the internet for ~$5 . There's a fair amount from people who have messed up lenses or have tried and failed to MOD them. Video tape destroying that, and donate your good (read: usable) PSX to a foster child or a child from a low income family, someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to play video games at home. It's not like you're giving them your Saturn, but its an improvement over nothing.

2) Second, what's the deal with Snatcher? I came into the post-NES scene late and missed the SegaCD game. What was the plot/gameplay? Why did Konami never bother to release the updated versions / sequel (Policenaughts) here? Would writing to them help get the games released here or will they let them rot in a back room somewhere? (I heard that they had Policenaughts 90% translated when they canned it's US release)

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Man *in whiny voice*, I can't believe I have time to run this page either. It's the early hours of the morning and I'm here answering e-mail. Now everyone knows why this section is the less coherent of all...

1. I would hope the people that are destroying Playstations for "fun" are either bashing broken systems, or just joking when they say that. Heck, even Playstations with a broken CD drive can be fixed; just buy a new drive from NCS! I'm sorry, if you're bashing a perfect Playstation you have serious problems. Give them away to charity, sell them for money, send them to me - anything but bash them for no good reason.

2. Snatcher is a heavily anime influenced adventure game; cool design, cool story, nice voice. Don't even bother asking Konami for the English version; the translation is complete, but Konami decided not to release it for "unspecified reasons." Go figure...

Dreamcast 2D Fan
From Mickey Hannibal:

I am a diehard Segafan. Ever since that fateful day so long ago when I purchased my Sega Megadrive, I have been a Sega soldier. (I am also ex-military, if you must know!) I am also a diehard 2D fighter fanatic. When I purchased my Saturn, I KNEW that my system would be the king of fighters(pun not intended....maybe it is!!). I have all of the greatest fighters on the Saturn: KOF'95, KOF'96, KOF'97, Street Fighter Zero, SFZ2, SF Collection, X-MenCOTA, MSH, X-Men vs Street Fighter, MSH vs SF, Great Dragon Ball Legends, Groove On Fight, Vampire Hunter and Vampire Saviour. My list goes on. Anyway, Capcom and SNK have stood by Sega because they know that only Sega can do 2D fighting games justice. And now, enter the Dreamcast. A 2D fighter fanatic's wet dream come true. Can you imagine the fighters coming to the DC? Street Fighter Zero 3, Marvel vs Capcom, King of Fighters 98, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 (I own EVERY Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting that came out on the Saturn), Last Blade 2, Cyberbots Revenge (I saw this in a Japanese gaming mag, not sure which one. Said that it'll hit the arcades March 1999, DC September 1999), JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and the motherlode, Street Fighter 3: Second Impact. I am so glad that Capcom and SNK have decided to stick with Sega, because the future of 2D fighting, and 2D gaming in general, lies with the Dreamcast. May Sega regain his crown as King of the Fighters, and terminate his so-called competition. I am Saiyajin11, and post this where ever you want to. P.S. Don't even think about the PSX version of Street Fighter Zero 3. It will NOT compare to the Dreamcast version.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
2D fighters are all well and good but how about some side-scrollers. Sonic Adventure looks like it could be a great game, but how a 2D Sonic game as well? Or maybe a Streets of Rage; ack, forget that, how about an original game? Think about, does the world really need ten freaking Capcom fighters a year... I certainly hope not.

MKR first impressions and RE on DC
From Charlie:

Hi there,
Just wondering, how do you disable "shockwave"? Another thing is, you had the reviewable copy of Magic Knight Rayearth? Then why didn't you review it? Is that the final copy of the game that will be released to the public? Also, you said in your first impressions of the game at SegaNet that "The first thing you'll notice when playing Rayearth is the quality of the anime cutscenes: it's first-generation Saturn video at its worse. Low-framerates and less than ideal compression take away from the richness that these scenes must have held in their original form. It's hard to appreciate anime when it's running at half the framerate that it should be running at, and letterboxed at that". Is it true? Is the game really that bad?

One last thing is that I read from videogames.com a few weeks ago that Resident Evil 2 on Saturn is being cancelled as the system is not able to handle the game's 3D environments, and as a result, Resident Evil: Veronica on Dreamcast is developed instead. Does this mean that both games will be almost identical with the same storylines?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Boy do I feel stupid, the only way to "disable" shockwave is to uninstall it. Lame ass macromedia... don't worry, the new design will get rid of our spinning Sonic soon enough.

Yes, I have a reviewable Rayearth, why else would I say that I did? As for why I haven't reviewed it yet, well, I haven't beaten it yet! Been spending too much time working on SegaNet to have time to go play Rayearth, I'll try to finish it up before it gets released in December of 2010...

The game isn't that bad, I haven't played through it all to review it though; the anime cutscenes are THAT bad. You'll see when you play it, or if you pick up the import.

Um, no. Biohazard: Code Veronica is a continuation of the Biohazard saga. It seems Claire has headed of to Europe to find her brother... finds a whole lot of zombies instead.

NiGHTS 2?
From Sheridan Hortness:

I've been looking at those pics you posted from the new Dreamcast Magazine in Japan. Are those last two pics from Sonic Adaventures or are they from Nights 2? It looks like a sequel to Nights for the following reasons. 1. The first picture has rings hanging in the air that look an awful lot like the rings from Nights. The tower also looks like the tower from Nights. 2. The second picture has an Ideya capture in the back and the circular platform has a picture of Reala's head on it. This means either Sega is currently working on a Nights 2, or they are reusing some ideas from Nights in Sonic Adventures.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Yep, I noticed that too; could mean a lot of things:

-Sonic Team is goofing around with ideas for NiGHTS 2

-Sonic Team is implementing NiGHTS design into Sonic

-Sonic Team is giving one of their other mascots a cameo appearance in Sonic's game

Whichever it is, it's good news for gamers.

Dreamcast Browser
From Caliburn:

Hey, good job on posting the VF3 mpegs. It sure gave people out there a rough idea on how VF3tb DC is coming up.

My first impression of the VF3tb Mpeg was it mirrors the arcade counterpart pretty well. However, it gave me this feeling that the programmers in charge of the VF3tb DC has not done a good job on syncing the music with the introduction motion. By this, I do not mean that the quality of the music or sound effects was pretty. I am rather referring to the point that the music is not synchronised with the graphical motions. To elaborate, the music was a bit short for the introduction. And, it ended before the VF3tb word came out.

My opinion is that the rather short intro music has sort of left the last bit of the VF3tb intro in silence. It is a bit disheartening. But, I am sure that more can be done to improve on it before the Nov release. :)

And, the sound effects is a up to standard judging by the mpeg posted. It sounds like the arcade, but it is a bit "soft"(not volume!). I think it is probably the encoding. Anyway, it reflects well on the graphical abilities of the DC. Best regards.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
The movies SOJ put out have impressed all; I think there's no doubt in anyone's mind that VF3tb will be a great game, arcade perfect or not. The music, hum, wait until the final version is out to judge, it could be just the way the movie was captured and compressed.

Adult titles & Online censorship
From Nathan Edwards:

I'm a bit confused by Sega's recent announcement about the Dreamcast's browser blocking access to adult sites. First of all, unless all adult sites in Japan have a unique domain name (like ---.xxx instead of ---.com) how will Sega block it? Second of all, how will they stop non-commercial sites? My third point is that won't this probably dissapear when everyone switches to MSIE4? Finally there seem to be two other contradictions in this policy. Sega already allows the release of Adult titles on the Saturn, and doesn't Sega want this system to be used for more than games? It's being billed as an entertainment system, meant to appeal to adults as well as children. In Japan, it may well become the computer that everyone owns, for web browsing, word processing (with documents saved over Sega's networks) and family entertainment. Censoring certain content just seems to be bad policy on Sega's part. What are your thoughts on this? I'm sure that Sega will allow DC users to attach pictures to their emails anyway, so horny little Japanese kids will find a way around Sega's policy without a problem. So why is Sega doing it? Are they worried about Japanese people joining Adult sites and spending all of their money online instead of buying games? I could care less about accessing net porn since I'd much rather enjoy my Japanese girlfriend but censorship really pisses me off. Since Microsoft probably doesn't block adult sites with WebTV, and the DC system is so similar, (especially with the Sega/Microsoft partnership) why is Sega playing BIG BROTHER? What does everyone else think?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
While it is true that adult titles get released on Saturn, they are censored. Sega came under heavy pressure from a consumer group in Japan for allowing the release of hentai games on Saturn; not wanting a bad PR story, SOJ has cut out most nudity from all licensed releases. Compare some mahjong titles released in the arcade and on Saturn, you'll see.

I think the internet porn deal on Dreamcast is just Sega watching their backs. They don't want the Dreamcast's launch to be overshadowed by protests claiming the machine is a vehicle for giving children access to porn. I'm guessing Sega will use some sort of propriety application similar to "NetNanny" and the other porn blocking agents; they look for keywords in the content and block them out/block the site out. Sega could even go as far as updating the blocked out database through the net.

Segacon and Controller Rants
From Mark Steelman:

Love the site. I was just wondering if there has been any more news about the Sega show in NC in the first part of December. Will there be any announcements, what 3rd parties will be represented, etc. I live near there and am planning to attend. The main reason I wrote in was I just wanted to do my small part to contribute, since there is obviously a shortage of viewer mail (I say this because you printed a note that flamed WD which is such a tired subject I think Vic wouldn't even mention it to someone standing near by when he read it, much less respond)

While I'm here I just wanted to make a quick response to the "What's wrong with the DC control pad" editorial. I am, what you call, a casual gamer. I play once every few days and on the weekends because that's what I have time for. I think that less is more when it comes to buttons. You probably remember the old Commodore 64, (not to be confused with the Nintendo 64 for the new-be gamer :^ D ) That controller had so many buttons, it looked like it had a built in telephone. If you remember, that system made the "Nintendo Goggle-Gear" look like a success. So when Sega redesigns the control of the game, makes no difference to me, I learned it once I will learn it again. As for buttons needed for fighters, I saw somewhere that there will be a periphera l for a Virtua Sick style controller so it's no big deal. Anyone who had the Saturn Virtua Stick will tell you that the L and R buttons were hard to use on that thing and whenever you needed to use the L and R buttons you would rather use the Nights controller or even the original controller than the Virtua Stick! As far as the conversions from PC go, if you have a PC, play it on the PC, if you don't, then you won't care, because you won't know what you're missing. To coin a phrase, "a game console is not a dumbed down PC," thus learning to use a game console should not require typing lessons. As Sega works to pick up the adult audience, they have to assume that we have jobs and families and will only be playing for short periods of time. I already have limited myself to games that I can play ten minutes at a time, which rules out RPGs, I don't want to have to spend my ten minutes refreshing my memory on controls. To ensure this, I'm starting my own committee called the Casual-Gamer's Peoples Front. The CGPF will see to it that the casual gamer will continue to be represented in the gaming world. We will meet by phone-tag once a month and vote on the next big video game hit, (like MYST III!) based on commercials we saw on TV or by the picture on the box, or by the display at Best Buy. (Wua-ha-ha-ha!) Sorry dude them's the brakes, they force the CGPF out and that leaves kids and hard-core gamers and we have seen from what happened with the Saturn, that doesn't cut it.

Long live Sega! Long live Seganet! Peace to El Salvador! I'm out!

Thanks,
Mark (President, Founder and Social Coordinator for the CGPF)

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Oh, you're talking about the Segacon; head on over to the official site at www.segacon.com for details. Shortage of e-mails? No way! I have way too many to get through, it's just that I'm lazy when it comes to getting them done. Let's see if I can try to respond to yours...

Well, um, sounds good, I agree; anyone else have a different opinion?

Dreamcast Browser
From Tristan Doyle:

Does anyone else see the irony of SOJ taking those sample pics in netscape? Just a thought.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Man, you had me rolling for a good hour with that e-mail. Heh, silly Sega... they make a deal with the devil and they still can't accept it; I'm sure Bill will rush over to Japan and make sure they uninstall Netscape and put in Windows 98 with IE 5 in time for IE's debut on Dreamcast.

Saturnfanatic Has A Point (not a coherent one, but a point nevertheless)
From Darrius Joiner:

Hey I just finished Robin Toledo's letter posted on 11-2-98. And while at first it does sound like rabid burst from a Sega lunatic, there are some valid points that are address by the author. We all know that the previous incarnation of Sega of America screwed the Saturn from launch and they did make some terrible and unforgivable mistakes. The bad press that the Saturn received from various publications as well as brainwashed new-generation gamers kinda helped to exacerbate the whole failure of the Saturn. C'mon think back to the #sega days Fernando...how many morons (wanna be 'gaming gurus') did you and I both run into on IRC! There were people who never even played the Saturn and were slamming it based on what they either read or heard, not on what they SAW! And US publications really were full of it when they ranked the systems...what a load of BS. I remember UGP gave the Saturn a 6, while giving the N64 a 9 based on that system's POTENTIAL!! The Saturn had a lot of titles out first party and 3rd party, and the N64 didn't even have a RPG or fighting game and they gave it a 9......there's something wrong with that! Next Generation never even gave the Saturn a chance, saying crap like Nights was a good game but can it save the Saturn....how about just telling us how awesome the game is and leave it at that. You don't see a magazine saying Zelda is an awesome game but will it save the N64....system war hype and nonsense.

Then you had the developers looking for an excuse to jump ship. Shiny claiming that Wild 9 (mediocre title at best anyway) was superior on the Saturn but they weren't gonna release it due to the state of the Saturn. Understandable, but at the time at felt that the Saturn still had a chance if some software showcasing the systems abilitites had emerged (like now on the import side). And how about Eidos (not Core the awesome developers who brought us awesome Sega CD games, the publisher who bought them), talked some crap about how Tomb Raider2 wasn't coming to the Saturn because of it's inability to do 'Mode 7' doors?! What the hell? I don't remember seeing any SNES scaling effects in TR2?!

Hey I admit SOA screwed up royally but the system was never given a chance, none of it's quality titles were ever showcased in publications. I don't remeber seeing any hype for Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, Nights, Decathelete, Duke Nukem, Quake, etc. at least not nearly as much as you see for crap like Spawn, Cruisin USA, Rascal or Iggy's Wreckin Balls. I remember many saying that the Saturns 2D capabilites were overatted and compared it 'buzzwords' like Blast Processing. Then along came Metal Slug, Thunderforce 5, Silhouette Mirage, Radiant Silvergun and X-Men vs. SF. And not many would admit that they said negative things about the Saturn. Now I laugh when I look through publications like this months Gamepro, who talk about how awesome the Saturn is and what import games to get...you should have done that 2 freaking years ago!! Instead of hyping up mediocrity and creating this system war non-sense, publications would have sold more good game period, and the Saturn would be just a little better off. I laugh when I read usenet post on how many like MegaMan X4, Shining Force 3 and Burning Rangers. All I can say is welcome to the party but you're a little late. If you had gotten a clue sooner, chances are you'd be playing Marvel vs. Capcom on your Saturn in the near future. The Saturn may not have been a success, but it I don't think it would be dead after 2 years.

But I do agree with Robin, that it is sickening that all these Saturn fans have come out of the wood work. Look how many DC sites have popped up in the past 4 months (and we won't even begin to question the quality or accuracy of information). We all know that when the next hot system comes along they'll be gone faster than a fat lady after a Snicker's bar. I won't go as far as to say they don't deserve the Saturn or it's software, but 'fair-weather' fans do make my stomch turn. The Saturn bombed because it was mis-managed not becuase it didn't have quality software. Remember that when your playing your hacked up Marvel vs. SF EX on PSX with Dual Shock support!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, the media didn't really give the Saturn a fair shot, at least not at the beginning. I remember Next-Gen was saying all sorts of stuff about the Saturn that first year; Christ they had people talking about a replacement already (and not just development talk, retail talk, as in releasing a replace in the near future)! Sadly, most people read such speculation as fact, and you end up with a bunch of babbling EB guys talking about Saturn 2 instead of praising Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 2.

Developers just went where they saw the support, and where they saw the money. Sony kicked Sega's ass in third party relations; they had better tools, better deals, better everything. Sega was stuck with a cocky attitude after the Genesis' success and it didn't help them one bit. As for Tomb Raider 2, well, the founder of Core went on the record at Tomb Raider's 3 unveiling in England and said Tomb Raider 2 wasn't possible on Saturn. It's in the news archives somewhere, go ahead and find it; I dare ya! Teehee.

The Saturn's lack of coverage/hype in publications has to be partly the fault of Sega's PR strategy. Of course, true gamers at these magazine gave Sega a fair shot at things; I know there were plenty of Sega fans at EGM, GameFan, etc. but they were just drowned out by the mountain of Sony stuff.

Fair-weather Saturn fans? I don't know, I think it's just gamers trying to find good games at the right price. You can't blame anyone for picking up a Saturn with 5 games for around 100 bucks. At full retail price, the Saturn wasn't a enticing purchase; drop the price, and it's only natural that more people will be drawn to it. You can't point the finger at these new Saturn owners for Sega's own mistakes: plan and simple, Sega didn't make the Saturn enticing for all these potential buyers way back when the system could of been profitable for the company.

Dreamcast Cometh (and a rant that I had to get of my chest)
From Iceman:

Good Evening (Or Whatever) Mr. Mosquera,

Hopefully my letter will grace your site in the days to come, but I'll be satisfied if you just read it. I am, of course, a rabid Sega fan. They make top quality games and arcade games to boot. I've been through the good and the bad (32X) and am eagerly awaiting the DC. I am getting very sick of all the DC hype that has been circulating around the internet. I know that it's a hot topic, but when certain sites start reporting about rumors and insignificant stories relating to the DC, I really get irritated. Recently, one of your affiliates in IGN reported a bunch of DC related crap that was considered to be a top story. "Programming Bugs" and "Company X says they do not plan to work for DC". Really, who gives a rat's ass? Sure, if this "bug" were any kind of a story, everyone would be talking about it (this site even went on to say that the developers were already fixing the problem). And who cares if a company isnt developing games for DC? There are a ton of developers not making games for it! Sure if somebody like Square jumped ship, I guess that would make a headline or two, but enough with rumors (Saga Frontier 2 for DC...gimme a break ). At least Seganet acknowledges that the news is slow on DC and doesn't want to report on crap like that. I for one have high expectations for the DC and am patient enough to wait for it. I work at a local game store (EB) and my manager had the oppurtunity to attend a vendor show last weekend that showcased DC on two large moniters. I'm telling you, my manager is no fan of sega or their products, but he said that Sonic Adventure left him speechless. He had nothing but praise for the DC and everyone had high expectations for it. When the DC launches here in the US, all it needs is an arcade perfect port of NFL Blitz '99 ( for the mindless sports fanatics (hey, I work in a game store, and that sold well)), Resident Evil Code:Veronica (for those All-American Action purists who bought Playstation for RE1), and Sonic Adventure for both those catagories plus anyone I left out. I'm even leaving out plenty of games that deserve note and ones that have yet to appear, but that only reinforces my faith in DC. PSX launched with a bunch of games (mostly crap..cough Toshinden..cough cough) and Nintendo had no games exept for one extraodinary title in its time (mario). DC has Sonic which is the perfect flagship title, and many others for the US launch. But of course, you probably already knew that, right?

Thanks for your time and here are a few questions:

1. Will the modem allow you to play direct modem play for games such as Virtua On2, or do you have to play on something like Heat.net for multiplayer (I had to ask a modem question) ?

2. Whats the deal on importing a DC? Theres only 26 days left and I'm the only one that notices a complete deadlock from US Importers. Forget about price, and tell us if they're available!! (NCS said they gauranteed all orders up till October 2 months ago and they still remain quiet.)

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I completely agree with your comments about the Dreamcast sites and the content that they're producing. Yes, there are slow news days, but that's no reason to start silly speculation. Ahem, ahem. I think a lot of other people in the industry feel the same way; we're sick of the stupid rumors and speculations posted as legit news. I think you should head on over to Dimension-S and read their little editorial on the matter; pretty dead on.

I think, that once and for all, Sega is going to get this American launch right. They're starting the proper hype with the retailers and the media, and I think they'll have the line-up that American gamers want. Visual Concepts is doing a fine job on the football and basketball titles, Sonic Adventure is Sonic, Climax Landers will fill the RPG niche. With the strong third party support, well, there's going to be a bit of everything for everybody next fall.

1. From the little that has been released on online play, I assume we'll get the option to do direct-dial or tcp/ip. This is just an assumption though.

2. I think things were looking pretty solid when the release date was the 20th, but the pushback the 28th and the recent system shortages has thrown the importers for a loop. They have no idea how many systems they'll be able to get or how much they'll pay for them!

Grandia and Forum Q's
From Douglas Cootey:

Fernando,
Two things: 1) Kudos for putting up with so many fanboys and wingdings. Having hosted web sites for 3.5 years, I know how inane people can get. I sometimes wonder if the mailbag section isn't just therapy for you as opposed to a public service! :) I just wanted to thank you for continuing to support your site even tho' you get some pretty insipid email...

2) Speaking of insipid email, I have another problem.. You remember that I wanted to know if you could have access to Saturnworld's Grandia walkthru? Well, I saw a posting about that from one of Saturnworld's former editors on your forum. Unfortunately, it was at the bottom of the forum page and it was in a quote. I posted asking if anybody knew the URL that Jeremy ? posted for Grandia's walkthru, but then my wife went and had a baby. Some nerve, ne? :) So I never saw anybody's replies to my posting. My original letter got rolled off (Hey, do you do that manually, or have you configured Matt's wwwboard to automatically do that for you?) Have you heard anything about the walkthru's new URL? Do you have Jeremy's email address? I sure would like to contact him... If there was a new address, then that would even be news, I guess. Hope you can help. Thanks.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Hey, if you guys take the time to write e-mails to me, the least I can do is respond. Sure, some of the e-mails I get make me want to hit something, but most of them are pretty good, like the one's I been posting so far today.

Before I answer your question, congrats on the birth of your child, I'm sure you're really proud. Be sure to teach it how to play video games from a young age, I mean, look how well we all turned out!

The wwwboard management? Well, it's easy, I just look for all the messages written by you and delete them.. I'm out to get you buddy! Nah, I just delete them manually when it gets over 200 messages. No idea on Jeremy's post/e-mail/walkthrough.

WD Ranting
From Joe Zeppo:

After reading yesterday's mailbag I felt inspired to write down my own thoughts regarding Working Designs, the "gift from God" company.

Gift from Hell is more like it! Working Design's behavior can be likened to that of an extremely selfish tantrum-throwing infant. Allow me to illustrate. If memory serves, I believe the reason they finally called it quits with Sega was because they didn't get a big enough booth at the E3 show, or whatever it was. I submit that they did not deserve a better booth in the first place. As wiser friends of mine pointed out, WD had exactly TWO good games out for the Saturn, Iron Storm and Dragon Force. That was it. They also cite Bernie's infamous "the Saturn is not our future" line as another reason for leaving Sega.

Now, at the time, I must confess that this statement enraged me to no end. Upon reflection, I realize the policy makes perfect sense. If Sega can start afresh with a new console, correcting all types of mistakes they made in the past (marketing, hardware, software, etc.) then more power to them! I, too, felt bitter about buying the less-than-stellar 32X and Sega CD. I am willing to forgive and forget if Sega does it right this time...and all inclinations lead me to believe this is the case.

Yet, WD continues with their immature behavior. They won't develop on Dreamcast? Good. You do that, Vic. Great strategy. Release games like Elemental Gearbolt for PSX. Gee, that'll bring in great revenue for your precious little company! (snicker) To quote Kahn from Star Trek II: "I cannot help but be touched."

Well, Vic, it is time for the fans to treat you as you deserve to be treated: you will be punished. Whereas once ago I actually anticipated buying Rayearth, now I will do no such thing. It's time for the infant known as WD to get a good old-fashioned spankin'!!!

Why? I believe a line from The Godfather best sums up how I feel about WD's antics: "It insults my intelligence...and it makes me very angry."

Well, that is all. Join me, Sega fans...Just Say NO to Rayearth!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Ack, not this WD thing again, lord please no. Ack, I'm not even going to bother explaining it yet again... someone needs to release a FAQ about this damn thing.

Nathan Edwards
From Nathan Edwards:

I know everyone, except the terminally rich, is in agony over the latest price estimates for imported Dreamcasts. However, there are other ways to get one. If you can make a friend with a Japanese student studying in America or make connections with people in your local Japanese community, you might be able to get your hands on a DC for only about $50-100 more than the price in Japan. I've found that the more I've studied about Japan, the more I realized that there were many Japanese people in San Diego. I've got a Japanese girlfriend now who studies at San Diego State University. I met her because the International Center at my old school (UCSD) has a Language Exchange Program where you can learn Japanese for free in exchange for helping Japanese people practice their english. If you like video games then you already love Japanese culture so making friends with Japanese people is pretty easy. Most Japanese people really love American culture so they want to make American friends but they are a bit shy and won't approach you on their own. I probably won't be able to get my DC in November because we didn't call my girlfriend's family in Japan early enough for them to pre-order a unit for me but I'll be ready when pre-orders open again.

If you love videogames then expand your mind a little bit and find out if you have a Japanese community in your city. In San Diego there's several stores including one big plaza called Yaohan where I can buy about 12 different import magazines (some of them with demo discs!) at lower prices than import shops, including weekly Saturn and PSX mags. If you make a Japanese friend, you can give them money and they can send it to their families in Japan, who will buy you a Dreamcast when they're available. I'm not really sure how much shipping will cost them but I'm thinking about $50-100 depending on how fast you want it. I hope this helps my fellow videogame addicts. I've already given up on getting a Dreamcast at launch, but since the only really decent launch title is VF3TB, I'll just play Zelda until Sonic Adventure arrives in December.

Nathan Edwards

P.S. Please don't email me asking if I can get you a Dreamcast too. I would never do anything to offend my girlfriend's family, and asking them to get me more than one DC would show that I was trying to make a profit rather than just asking them for a personal favor. Good luck in waiting, and remember: Sonic is the truth, the light and the way.....

Saturn MPEG Card
From Rene Gamez:

Hey,
I recently bought Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete (MPEG version) for the Saturn since Working Designs(I hate those guys) canned the Saturn version for the U.S. But I can't get the MPEG card to play the game because nobody has it. I e-mailed and called import shops but recieved no good news from any of them on availability. I don't want to get stuck with a great game because I don't have the necessary peripheral. I don't know where to turn to perhaps you can help me out. I don't care how much it is just as long as I can get it. Thanks.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Ok, here's my advice to you:

Call, not e-mail, call every retailer in our links page asking for the card. If that doesn't work, post in every forum, scour the auction sites (www.ebay.com, etc.), and post on usenet. I'm sure you'll turn up something.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

5 Questions
From Jason Mazure:

Hi,

I have a few comments and questions for you.

1. Do you know if Metal Slug 2 is coming out for Saturn? I have seen it advertised in the back of some magazine like Gamefan but that doesn't mean a whole lot.

2. I just got Saturn Bomberman but it has no instructions and I have never played any of the games in the series. Could you explain to me the different rules of the game modes, what the powerups do, how to play etc. or direct me to a website that has a manual archive so I could print out a copy of the manual?

3. Please DO NOT get discouraged by your lack of response to the Game Basic site. I am a GB owner and I think it is great. The only problem is I have downloaded the games and read through the site but haven't been able to find any instructions on how to load these games into the Saturn. The guy who runs the site knows how to do it but he isn't showing us how to make use of all these programs. I think there are a lot of fellow GB owners out there who have the kit but are still trying to figure out how to get it all up and running. The whole damn manual is in Japanese. I don't speak or read Japanese. What all the silent GB owners out there are waiting for is a good translated English manual in book or online form. I am in a state of limbo while I wait for some English instructions to appear. I can't make much use of it right now. This is obviously why you are not getting the response you hoped for and why you will continue to not get much response. If someone came out with a English manual the U.S. GB scene could explode and really put Japan's output to shame.

4. I have seen this game ,Free Runner, in an old sale ad and on a store shelf once and wondered what the hell it is. I have never seen an ad specifically for it and can't find any reviews of it in any magazine or any mention of it online. Have you ever played it and do you know what it is? It's not an import. It was a early SEGA release.

5. I read the article that was posted about the test market thing that was attended by, was it you or Vargas? I just have to say that the answers that the attendees gave were horrible and made me cringe. When asked what they felt would be the most amount of money they would pay for the system they said something like $145. They gave some way, way lowball price which probably upset SEGA. Considering they are already probably going to take a huge finacial loss on the system at the proposed price I heard before of $229, this could only serve to discourage them and make them begin to doubt their prospects in the US unnecessarily. This kind of info could cause them to not include the modem with the system to lower the price. This would be a horrible turn of events. I can understand someone thinking that the lower the price they say they can influence SEGA to sell it cheaper and then they'll be able to save a few bucks when the system launches. I don't think that SEGA will be able to sell it this cheap. Maybe they will but this will only serve to reinforce the belief that the Japanese have about American consumers, that we are unwilling to pay for the latest, greatest technology. And people wonder why Japanese companies don't bring over all kinds of cool technology/appliances that they only see on TV or in magazines. It is exactly because of the kind of negative feedback that was given at the SEGA test group. Sure those that were there liked it and were excited but as long as they are unwilling to at least pay a premium on new, cutting edge technology Japan's going to say a big fuck you to these US gamers. What do they care if you like it if you're not going to pay them enough to make it worth their while. I'm sure that the people in Argentina and other third-world countries would love it too but they aren't going to pay that much for it and SEGA isn't going to slash they're price down to 20 pesos so that Manuel can afford a new Dreamcast system. You(the test group) were given a chance to send a strong signal to SEGA that the American market is ready, excited and willing for a new SEGA system and that SEGA should pull out all the stops and go full steam ahead with they're development plans for new and exciting games for the US market. Instead what they got was a lukewarm response that it was great and all but as long as if they didn't have to pay more than a PSX for it. You can't always expect new technology at old technology prices. They had a chance that I and most other will never get and they utterly and completely BLEW IT!!

B-bye,
Jason Mazure

p.s. love your page.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. It's not coming, trust me.

2. I have just the page for you: Alex's SS Bomberman Shrine. Checkout the FAQ section, it should have what you want.

3. I don't know, I think Romar has done a fair job with the page. The FAQ explains most of the stuff you mentioned, and a work in progress English translation of the manual is available. The new programs even include a SegaNet.txt which explains how to run things! If you're still having trouble getting started, post to the GB forum, or e-mail Romar; we're here to help!

4. Saturn, Genesis, Master System, or Arcade? I haven't heard of it, must of either been canned or not very good.

5. It was Vargas that attended (the article has been taken down via Sega's request). As for the focus group answers, well, remember, these are the same people who said they preferred the large Saturn boxes to normal jewel cases. Sigh.

Life is Just a Bowl of Saturns
From Saxton:

I have been disloyal. I'll admit it. I gave my Saturn to a friend so that he could play it... and I took his N64 in return. Now, we are trading back again... but this is something that I would have never done in the past. My hands feel dirty. I'm used to that annoying stick on the controller and I think Quest64 is pretty neat.

What has done this to me? Sega, that's who. I've owned all of their systems save Nomad and 32X. I have more customer loyalty to them than to any other company on the face of the planet. And they have reduced me to this. I await Magic Knight Rayearth with bated breath. I promised myself I'd never buy another Working Designs game ever. Yeah well, EB has my order pending. This is a sad sorry state. And it gets worse. Rayearth is the last new Sega game I'll play in a long long time. I'm not going to import a Dreamcast. I refuse to, I don't have the money, and I know little Japanese beyond "Aligato" and "Grig Orig" (Yeah PDS!) So... the next new Sega game I'll be playing is..... Sonic Adventures? What ever comes with the Dreamcast.

I had lost faith... until I picked up Phantasy Star I again, I thought Quest 64 was kinda cool. Phantasy Star reminded me what a real RPG was. And then... heaven forbid... I stopped checking Seganet.com daily. It got down to once a week and it's lowest part. And I haven't written a Reader Review since that contest... (I still haven't seen my Command and Conquer review up Fernando... ahem) You know what dragged me back from the black depths of despair? The preview of Grandia II that Fernando had up. Praise everything that is good in the world! Those pictures... unbelievable. And it sounds like you don't have to have played the first one, which is good, cause as I said... I speak little Japanese beyond what I picked up from PDS. That game... well, the pictures reminded me of what Phantasy Star I (I had been playing it, remember?) would look like on Dreamcast. Which brought up a new spark in my mind. Phantasy Star V. That led to my thinking of Shining Force IV, or any new Shining title besides Shining Wisdom 2. That led to thinking about a possible Lunar sequel. (That I would import.) And that got me excited... all these awesome games... and then my hopes crashed back to reality for a minute. Yeah... next November. At best. But then I saw ToeJam and Earl III. And there is hope. I refuse to get excited about Dreamcast yet, but there is hope.

Command & Conquer review, oopsie! Well it was just a two paragraph review, but since you're visiting SegaNet daily again I'll post it.

All Japan Pro Wrestling "Collection"
From am2guy@hotmail.com:

Wait just a second, Fernando! If you DONT include the part about denying PSX and N64 loyalist access to Saturn, then Robin actually made some good points. Maybe you own a PSX or whatever, and simply dont want to hear it, but the guy has a right to his opinion. Just like the guy who worked at EB, who basically pissed on the Saturn and went on a one man PSX ad campaign. You felt it was appropriate to post that garbage.

Anyway, what do you mean by All Japan Pro Wrestling Featuring Virtua-"Collection". Is this a new version with some changes to the wrestler edit, or is it the same game being re-released at a cheaper price?

Thanks in advance,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
It's the latter, Sega of Japan released a whole bunch of classic Saturn titles for 2, 800 Yen. I think it's a good 100 titles or so.

Eternal Champions On Dreamcast?
From Chris Muntsy:

Could you tell me if Sega has any plans to make Eternal Champions for the Dreamcast ? I've been waiting for the sequel since I bought my Saturn since it was advertised on the back of the original Saturn box. I once Emailed Sega and asked them if they where still planning on releasing it and they responded that it would be out by Christmas of last year.. Still waiting.. Many people may disagree with me, but I feel Eternal Champs was a great 2D Fighter. Thanks..,

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Damn, I haven't heard of this title in ages; seems that after the whole "Save EC" campaign died down...

Getting to your question, well, I wouldn't hold my breath for it. Most of the original EC programmers/designers are gone, the brand isn't worth much, and I simply don't see it happening. Then again, ToeJam & Earl is making a comeback...

Arcade to DC
From Rodan:

Why is Sega afraid of porting "older" model 3 games to the DC? The original model 3 architecture is still way more powerful than the N64 and is at least on par with Voodoo2's in SLI mode. A "The Lost World" port is one of the top 5 reasons I would buy a DC. SEGA better port "Star Wars" as well. I don't understand why they wouldn't port these games. They would surely be big successes, along with games like "Daytona 2". Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant and keep up the good work!

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I think this has been addressed before, but here goes again. There are many reasons why Sega doesn't want to port the old Model 3 titles:

-Want to keep Sega/Dreamcast brand fresh, don't want to rehash old arcade titles on home console (which is what they did with Saturn).

-Model 3 ports are much harder to pull off than the relatively simple Naomi ports; Sega would rather have DC's arcade games come from Naomi, and use the other resources to produce original titles.

Remember, Sega made the decision to port over Virtua Fighter 3tb at the last minute and the way that's going they're probably inclined to port as few Model 3 titles as possible.

I don't think it's such a bad deal, the Naomi to Dreamcast ports are going to turn out much better and they'll give Sega the time to invest in adding Dreamcast-exclusive features.

Saturn Reviews
From Mike Tham:

Are you guys going to review more Japanese Saturn titles like Shadows of the Tusk and Wachenroder. I'm pretty sure they're some good games that did not recieve any hype in the English speaking world.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
It's sort of difficult to review games we don't own. Sega doesn't provide reviewables of Japanese titles, and we're not include to purchase games that we:

-Don't have the money to buy.
-Don't have the inclination to play.
-Don't have the Japanese knowledge to enjoy.

We welcome reader reviews to fill the void whenever we can't review a game. And, ahem, I think we did a better job than most in covering the two game titles in our previews section. I think we even mentioned what scores the two games got in Saturn Fan reviews.

We Love Vic
From psychy@axs.net:

Well, first of all, I have to commend you for standing up to that traitor Vic. Every since he betrayed us Saturn owners by giving us Rayearth instead of Lunar, I've been quite sour with him. I try to go to Working Designs' webpage these days and it seems like they're all being a bunch of jerks to Sega fans. Just because Sega of America gave them sore treatment doesn't mean all Sega fans in general are to be held responsible. He could have at least had some decency and have made a formal apology to their extremely loyal Sega fans (the keyword here is "Sega") for canning Lunar, but no. Well, he and his entire company has lost my respect and it will take a damn lot to get me to buy any of their products ever again since all he seems to care about is his money and his pride.

P.S. A message to Mr. Ireland, don't make promises you can't keep sir. (i.e. Lunar - Silver Star Story or Lunar Complete) Got me waiting almost two years for a Saturn Lunar game before announcing that you were canning the Saturn version. Whatever Vic, you're the man *sarcasm noted to the fullest*

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
I'd rather not get into the whole WD thing; I think Sega fans that were hurt by what WD did should accept the situation and move on. Fine, you feel WD screwed you, I can respect that, don't buy their products and go play the other great games out there. I also think that Vic should just ignore that flame-bait, instead of adding fuel to the fire.

Two Q's
From Krank:

Hi, I'm from Singapore and I've been going to your pages ever since I heard about it and I can only say what a good job you guys have done in providing the latest information and news about Dreamcast stuff. I got a few questions I was hoping you can help me put through to someone who knows given your broad contacts and knowledge. 1) Will the Dreamcast be able to play Saturn Games? I got a bunch of games that I would play again but being TV sparse...1 TV...and I've also got 2 more consoles to which totally uses up my 3-point input box, that leaves the Saturn. 2) Saw those funky T-shirts and Jackets....How do you get them? Where can we order them?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
1. The Dreamcast will not work with Saturn games, so it's time to start making room for yet another console by your TV set.

2. Not sure how things are in Asia, I'm sure Japanese stores are selling Dreamcast shirts/jackets of some sort. As far as the Dreamcast clothes I got, those came from Sega of America. They're not selling them I'm afraid. Your best bet is to ask someone in Japan to look for something, if that's not possible, you're out of luck.

Hardcore Man, Hardcore
From Joe Schnur:

First of all that jackass ray romano or whatever his name is a fucked up piece of shit and the second I read that letter in the mailbag I all I could think about is kicking his ass all day.How fucking stupid is he the dreamcast is going to kick sony and nintendos gay fucked up airhead asses.

I am a diehard sega fan(in case you havent figured it out yet)and I look at your site everyday,it's the greatest site on the net.I am saving up money and am planning on buying the dreamcast, every game(exept football and basketball and other sports I dont like),every accesory and a fat ass 36 inch TV ,a vcr , a fat ass dolby prologic sound systemand some other stuff. Can you reccomend the best TV,stereo and other stuff worthy of hooking my dreamcast to (they cant be sony).Or should I buy the most expensive thing I can find and compare specs ext..

Sincerely,Joe Schnur

PSwhen I first got sega rally I couldn't stop playing it either

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
To be honest with you, I have no clue about TV sets. I'm sure the HDTV's would make the Dreamcast games look that much better, but that's not what you're looking for, I don't think. Anyone who's a big techphile want to help us out? Best 36 inch TV out there?

DC Bashing
From N/A:

Dear Fernando,

You know, I can't help but notice the fact that Sega always get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to comparing systems and games to other companies. It seems that all the harsh words are reserved for Sega. We commonly see PS and N64 owners bash Sega on other sites and it makes me sick. Sure, Sega failed on their 32x and Sega cd and both deserve flak but the DC? Come on! It is not even out yet! These bashers prematurely downplayed the chances of Sega making a comeback. Let's get the facts straight: DC has: 1) Terrific specs; the best in the industry for now 2) Good third party support, Namco anyone? 3)The best, I dare say, in-house game developers on any system. It has the AM boys and girls, headed by Mr. Yu Suzuki, Yuji Naka and the rest of the Sonic team, Team Andromeda(Please announce Panzer Dragoon soon), and many others. You won't find these guys on other systems. 4) There's a sure arrival of countless peripherals, in case you don't like the controller. Hell, even the Saturn got a truckload of controllers and peripherals. 5) Sega seems to be doing things right so far. They had to cancel all advance orders for the DC. Their properly hyping the DC helped a lot.

I'm not sure why Sega is still getting some harsh words from other system owners. They have this preconceived notion that anything Sega does is a failure. Even when things look good, they can't even acknowledge it.

But what really sickens me is the unfairness. Sega's mistakes are magnified a lot of times than they should, while the other systems' shortcomings are ignored. Let's see, the PS has the crappiest Capcom 2D fighting games. A lot of the games released are total crap and only a few deserves accolades, but still, the game is still hyped. There is so much crap that you barely have time to say this game is crap. This glut is definitely not good for the industry. Couldn't Sony be more selective in the games 3rd party developers produce? It seems that Sony is just their to make a quick buck and to hell with quality. Hype is not enough! The volume could use toning down. The controllers of the PS is not fit for some games. Sometimes, some moves are difficult to execute because of the controller. Some PS systems are not made well, they overheat only after a few hours of play. And can the PS become a success without the help of Namco and Square? I don't think so. Sony may have made great games like GT, but it doesn't cut it. Almost all of the great games on the PS are made by a 3rd part developer. What will happen when a new system like DC arrives that is also easy to program for developers? WIll Sony still get the Lion's share of every game? No. The reason PS succeeds is because they have all the right combinations. Saturn is difficult to program and the N64, well read on.

Nintendo, man, Nintendo lost it. They messed up big, this time! Their 3rd party support is decent but not good enough like the PS. They don't have any Capcom, Namco, nor Square games. It's a wonder that they even managed to stay competitive, though they lag in Japan. The games that can be considered spectacular come out only three or four times a year particularly near Christmas. Their format sucks and the DD is non-existent. This lack of memory capacity hurt the games. Often the games are poorly presented and the so-called dream team members... well, let's just say the promise was not fulfilled to make it short.

One of the most silliest complains I read, was when some biased idiot did not like Sonic Adventure because it had "crappy ovals" for shadows. I mean, this was reason enough for this idiot not to like Sonic Adventure! How stupid could this jack-ass be?! Idiot, idiot! Second, some magazine and website downplayed Namco's announce to make games for DC by also stating that Namco also made an announcement before to make games for the Saturn and it did not materialized. Well, the president of Namco said the announcement at the TGS, a major gaming event, in front of the president of Sega himself! Wouldn't it be ridiculous if Namco retracted their statements? To all those bashers, accept it. It's a done deal, Namco will make games for the DC and that alone should be reason enough for PS owners, especially Tekken fans, to buy a DC. Don't raise any false speculation that there's a chance that Namco will not make games for the DC. Third, why do some people compare Sonic Adventure to Zelda 64? These people should realize that Zelda was supposed to be released in 1996, that was two years ago! Of course, Zelda 64 will be a great game. It is no surprise because Miyamoto already made Mario 64 before and he knows how to take advantage of the N64. DC is obviously a new system and Yuji Naka is still learning the ropes. Sure the game concept was conceived when the Saturn was still alive, but the hardware does not even exists. It takes time to properly program the game and tweak gameplay. It is Yuji Naka's first effort after all. Also, the time it took for Zelda to be made was long, so it better be good. I know Nintendo's future in Japan depends a lot on this game. Yuji Naka only worked on Sonic Adv. for a only few months! How could comparisons be made? The most basic of all is that these games are not even the same genre! Fourth, those first impressions of Sega's first batch of games. Remember RE 2? It looked like crap during its preview in video. That's why Capcom took their sweet time and released it in 1998. The same is true for MGS. Remember those first few PS games in '95 and the N64 ones in '96, pretty crappy, don't you agree? And there were a lot of those type of games. Now, it is unfair to prematurely judge the upcoming DC games. It is still possible that they will be vastly improve, then again maybe not. The point is, don't judge based on what you see on the 'net, wait for the final product then decide. Programmers will eventually write better code for DC and that is something to consider. Fifth, why are people judging Sega based on what they did before only? SIGH... They just don't get it, do they? The reason why DC was made is because Sega wants to improve their tarnished image and grab a larger share of the industry. Sega claimed "to have learned from their mistakes." Sega hopes by bringing in the "right" system with quality games, they may manage to win back disgruntled owners of previous Sega systems and some new ones too. The mistakes and failures of the past should be totally forgotten. Sega now has a new staff and the people behind the previous systems are gone. Better members have taken over and they certainly made some positive moves.

Believe it or not, I'm not a biased idiot like some owners of N64 and PS . I still believe in fairness. I know Sega still has to produce quality games consistently, DC still has a lot to prove. I'm not labeling those who opt not to buy a DC an idiot. The reason why I wrote this letter is to challenge those who still refuse to see or acknowledge that Sega may have a winner in their hands. I don't see why their views should remain. Maybe the reason why they are so is because they believe that Sony will announce a new system on Nov. 20 and blow away the specs of the DC. There had been a lot of rumors like this DVD based PS2 can do ten million polygons per second and Nurbs(whatever that is). But they are just that, rumors. Why should they be so eager to believe something that is unconfirmed? There is the possibility that this PS2 may be hard to program and be too expensive. With all the developers on board, it is proven that it is easy to write games for the DC and the price is very reasonable. Only $220 in Japan with some internet capabilities, that's a bargain. I still can't figure out these biased people. Face it, DC has a better chance to succeed than fail.

I'm sorry this is a long letter, which I normally don't like myself. It's just something I want to get off my chest. Thanks for reading.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Console wars, console wars, I can't stand the damn console wars. Wouldn't it be nice if people just played the games they enjoyed and shut the hell up about everything else? My advice to you is the following: ignore the biased idiots, and play the games. It's not worth your time and energy to argue with people engaged in console wars. Enjoy your Zelda, your Metal Gear, and your Sonic and let the kiddies yell at each other on usenet.

Browser
From Leon Thomas:

Since the Dreamcast have a modem, will it have a web browser? If so, who's making it and what features will it have?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Go look in the news archives; there's Sega's DreamPassport packed in with the thing and Microsoft's IE coming in '99. Go check the archives for the full story.

Is It "Possibly" To Use Spellcheck?
From DarienTuxe@aol.com:

Do you have any idea of what type of modem they're using? I mean like the modem brand or like using a 56K flex technology. Also if DC had something like a Parralell port. Is it possibly for Dreamcasy to play N64 or PSX games( PSX is able to play gameboy games with a converter through the parallel port)?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Modem, modem, well, the Japanese one is a detachable 33.6k manufactured by Company X. Yes, I don't have a freaking clue who's doing the modem, Sega hasn't really talked all that much about its modem technology save for the usual networking hype bullshit. I would guess one of the partners is making the thing, but I haven't confirmed anything. I'll get around to it.. some day.

I'll say it now, and I'll say it again: the Dreamcast will only play Dreamcast games, nothing more, nothing less. Anything you hear to the contrary is probably coming from a website on Geocities. Not that there's anything wrong with that, teehee.

One Million Units
From Rick Smith:

sega wants to sell 1,000.000 units by april & my ? is how long did it take sony & nintendo to sell 1million units?

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Took about six months for the Playstation to sell one million units in Japan. The N64 managed a million in just two months, but went downhill from there.

DC Netplay
From nedwards@home.com:

Are you willing to place a list up on your site, updated regularly after the 27th of November (D-Day) listing the names and email addresses of people who imported Dreamcasts who want to try playing games online. I'm dying to find someone else in San Diego who will be buying a Dreamcast so that I can try playing them online in Sega Rally 2 or another game. Is SR2 the only game announced so far that will definitely support point-to-point online play (where you call your friend up and play)? What else can we expect to see soon for online play? I've heard VF3TB won't be compatible with online play (probably because of lag time?) so does that mean we'll never see a fighter with online play? I've got a cable modem so I can't really remember what's possible with a 33.6 modem. What do you expect to see in the future? How many people do you think will import Dreamcasts in each major city in the US before Christmas? I think American Dreamcast importers would really appreciate a network to find other DC owners in their cities (or at least locally enough that the long distance charges aren't too high or cause too much lag), so can you help us out? Thanks immensely for your hard work on this site. I'm here every day.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Well, the site probably wouldn't have something like that up from day one, but if there's enough demand, we'll probably set something up a few weeks after the launch. I want to get the thing in my house and running before committing myself to setting up a listing like that.

VF3tb will not have network play, Sega Rally 2 is the only game that we know for sure (100%) will be network-friendly. Capabilities of a 33.6k, well, it's probably not enough to do any decent gaming over tcp/ip (except for maybe strategy games or something). Direct dial gaming will work pretty good for most games, but I think it will still be too laggy for a timing-based, precision fighter like VF3tb. Let's hope SoA allows US DC owners to hook the system up to a network card.

More Rubbish From Robin
From Robin Toledo:

I know I've bitched about this subject already, but I think that it just has to be readdressed, especially to the real Sega fans out there. You'd (Mr. Mosquera) probably rather read mails regarding the Dreamcast and all, but come on already, folks, lets just wait (impatiently) and see what happens, ok? All this Dreamcast hype is making it look like the Playstation and N64, and that disgusts me. Face it, if you are a true Sega fan and Sega Enterprises Ltd. stays the way they are, then the DC will rock.

Back to the subject. I've noticed a few letters popping up again about people recently buying Saturns (practically for nothing) and are now claiming to be Sega fans--especially the ones who review Panzer Dragoon Saga on various gaming sites that say,"I recently bought my Saturn for practically a couple strokes of a salesman's penis just to play this game (Panzer Saga) and they both rule!! Yeaahh!!" These fools who bought their Playstations and N64s (and viciously killed the Saturn) are now just finding out why our ringed friend is God's favorite game machine. "Saturn rules! Saturn rules!", they chant. Well let me say something to you folks: "Screw you. You killed it, now suffer without it." And all the true Sega fans who read these garbage and just sit back and smile for whatever reasons just have to think a second. You and I bought our Saturns when it first came out. We paid a hell of a lot more for it than these donkey dungs are paying for it now. We sticked with Sega through the Sega CD and 32X (even though I don't see the Sega CD as a mistake) while they hailed their Playstations and N64s. We bought our Virtua Fighter 2s and Sega Rallys when they helped launch crap like MK3, Twisted Metal, Warhawk and Cruisin' USA to stratospheric successes. Look at what's left of the Saturn and Sega here because of them. Now they find Saturns and games, pay dirt for them, and proclaim themselves as Sega and Saturn fans...isn't there something sickenly wrong here? Just think, these hemorrhoids who laughed at the Saturn when it was alive now own them and are enjoying (possibly) divine games like X-Men vs SF, Panzer Saga, Radiant Silvergun, Vampire Savior, MSH vs SF, among other games (courtesy of EB), just like us. Heaven forbid! Now I know that we can't stop these people from buying Saturns, but I think that we should do something about this (repeated, brutal, unforgiving criticisms maybe?). Personally, I'd love to find a way to keep Saturns and Sat games away from these leechs' undeserving hands (like buying out ALL Saturn products...but I don't have that kind of money).

If you are one of these people reading this mail (providing Mr. Mosquera publish it), I hope that I've offended you. I hope that you also take your Saturn and games outside and burn it to hell. Play your Playstations, N64s, American games, violent games and sports games and be happy. Leave Sega alone.

If you are more than fed up with this crap like me, or even if you are from an angry mob that I've possibly just created, feel free to e-mail me at saturnfanatic@hotmail.com. Better yet, storm Seganet and other Sega sites, even general gaming sites about this disturbing subject. Thank you...oh, and while this world is pretty cool, I'd rather be on Saturn.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
Heh, and you guys wonder why I don't feel like answering my e-mail somedays. It's crap that this. Note to self: never publish another e-mail by this moron again.

Internet Dream
From Costas Mataragas:

Hello,
I have two questions. How will the internet service work for the Dreamcast? And Being that I live in the USA will I have to call long distance to Japan in order for me to use it? I would be very greatful if you could answer me these two questions.

Fernando Mosquera Replies:
While I don't know how it will work exactly (don't have one to tool around with), Sega has said that you'll be able to use your own ISP. I suppose, as long as your ISP is based in the US, that you won't have to call Japan to cruise the net.

Got a question, comment, or concern? Send your e-mails to mailbag@seganet.com. By sending in an e-mail you agree to have it published on this site. If you wish to keep your name or address secret, please state so in your e-mail. Thank you.
