Saturn:The Bottom Line

Editorial by Patrick McManus

Isn't this fun to watch, a maxed out system trying to handle Saturn games. Sony has gone nuts, they're trying to release all these 3d games to try and stand up to N64.  The system's maxed out.  San Fransisco Rush being a recent casualty.   Plus with Sony buying up the James Bond franchise to make a game, they're just trying to put anything out.  It's time Sony starts planning for the future.   They're trying to make psx out to be a 64 bit machine and it's ugly.  Sony has Metal Gear Solid, N64 has Hybrid Heaven, which is actually shaping up to be superior (Metal Gear will rock though). I'm not for Sony anymore, I'm for Nintendo and Sega.   I'm anxious to see what rehashes Sony is gonna have at E3 this year, probably another Crash or more sports titles.  Look at the "amazing" Blasto which was so hyped up it's funny.  It turned out to be crap.  It's disgusting to watch the pathetic media jump on Sony's bandwagon and hype up some totally mediocre game and then give it 100's everywhere.  Good thing that didn't happen in Blasto's case.   Pertaining to the release of DarkStalkers 3 for Psx this fall, some people ask capcom why do they bring out these Ports of their amazing 2d fighters when the Psx is gasping to handle it.  It makes Capcom look bad.  Well, Capcom is doing smart business, they know the poor saps over here who will buy anything will buy the disgusting translations.  <> Now for the bottom line,  Isn't it funny how now that Saturn is on it's last legs, it's whipping the crap out of PSX.  With import gaming of course. Take the recent Darkstalkers 3, Xmen VS Streetfighter, Panzer Dragoon Saga, House of the Dead, and games like Grandia, Shining Force 3, and the upcoming Resident Evil 2 which has been speculated to be using the 4 mb Ram Cart, and you're set with some amazningly entertaining fun.  The only one I mentioned that people might disagree about is House of the Dead, but hey, what does Psx have, Time Crisis?

The best humor I get out of this is from my friend at my local Electronics Boutique.   He tells me stories of people coming into the store and playing  the import copy that they carry of Xmen Vs Streetfighter, and then asking "Is this coming out for Playstation?" My friend would say "No, THAT"S not coming to PSX" pertaining to the quality of the translation on the screen.  Same goes for Dead or Alive.  Looks like the proof is in the pudding.  Psx CANNOT handle Model 2.   Dead or Alive is a mediocre translation at best. It's funny what people think now adays. Last year, there was a little Saturn display in the store, and there people coming in asking if Fighters Megamix was Tekken 4.  Thats the kind of people who are buying this PSX.  Thats Sony's 10,000,000 prized user base. Sony brags about the millions of Playstation's they've sold but they never mentioned how many were returned for skipping, overheating, and all the other problems the paper weight has.  As much as the media denies that they took a major part in killing Saturn, they were the ones who planted the seed in the public's mind that the PSX was the system to end all systems.

I recall someone writing as letter to a certain IGN website which I wont mention who, about how the Media killed Saturn.  This Site responded by criticizing the writer on how its the CONSUMERS that killed it.  Well, guess what, people read your mag before they buy.  Lemme state one thing so I won't sound too biased, Sega definitely screwed up when they launched the saturn and they DESERVED to be screwed.  There I said it, but after they got their act together, Saturn continued to be #1 in my book.  Now I have a vivid memory of the past years of the media coverage of Saturn but I do remember the past few months or so.  What I mean is, when a game as big as Xmen VS Streetfighter comes out, that game should get front cover or at least, an honarable mention and a pat on the back for saturn.  Same goes for Dead or Alive when that came out.  Now people could say Oh those games were only in Japan, well I don't see any countries named before the titles of the mags like USA Gameplayers or USA Gamefan.   No way.  A game is a game.  And with I've read recently about Panzer Dragoon Saga, this game should be previewed everywhere.  What I'm saying is, people read the mags before buying the system they want.  The morons at Sega didn't help either by not advertising.  The only respectable thing I have seen from the Media recently is in EGM's 100 games of all time.  Saturn actually beat out PSX by a good 2 percent.  Kudo's to EGM.  A small compliment to the editor "Knightmare" on the Gamefan staff who shows his Sega colors.  It's hard to be a Sega fan now adays.  PSX is now the "cool" system like it was with Genesis years ago.  The casual gamers make up the most percentage of sales, not the hardcore ones like myself.  With Katana, Sega obviously have to take the surplus route meaning they've gotta have a whole crap load of games like PSX with the only difference being that most of Sega's games will be great unlike PSX where there was more bad than good.  Let's hope all this evidence hoping to a 98 release makes it happen....99=failure.

Well, theres my LONG rant for today.  One more thing,  I cannot wait to see the look on Sony's face after Katana arrives.  I wanna see their smurks wiped off their face with a little dose of what I call, quality gaming. 98! 98! 98!
