It may not have much in common with Space Channel 5, but this sampler rocks.

Soundtrack Review: The Space Channel 5 Planet Dance Sampler

Sega's free goodie has little to do with SC5, but we can't stop listening to it!

June 14, 2000

If you ordered your copy of Space Channel 5 direct from Sega or from certain retailers, you'll have found yourself with a free soundtrack sampler CD entitled "Space Channel 5: Planet Dance." Let's clear one thing up from the start. This CD has absolutely nothing to do with Tetsuya Mizuguchi's fabulous futuristic space show. You'll not find any of the instantly familiar Space Channel 5 themes floating around in the background, and really the only factor tying the sampler with SC5 is the picture of Ulala on the cover.

It doesn't matter, though. All thoughts of Space Channel 5 aside, this soundtrack makes for an awesome listen. Once you've popped it in your CD player, you may not want to pull it out, not even for the game's true soundtrack.

The Planet Dance sampler features 8 songs and around 27 minutes of music, all originating from various artists but mixed by N.Y Z100 DJ Rich and L.A. KISS FM DJ Jimmy Kim (that's what it says on the back of the box - exactly). All of it is just asking to be danced to, thus explaining the descriptor on the box of "the world's greatest club hits." In fact, I think I wore out my seat sliding and bouncing around as I wrote today's update. And man alive, you try typing when you've got bugs in your ass and feat - ahh, so there's the link between the soundtrack and a videogame, both improve you finger skills.

Uhh, goof-ball humor aside, the sampler features music of an alarmingly different number of styles. I suppose all of it could be played in a dance club, what with the heavy beats, but some songs will remind you of that European-originated song that manages to set the world afire every so often, with others reminding sounding as though they were pulled straight from Konami's Dance Dance Revolution soundtrack. Download the sample MP3s clips below to see for yourself.

Sure, it may share little in common with Space Channel 5 (I suppose the music has the same level of energy, although that sure is straining), but the Planet Dance sampler stands out on its own. We'd suggest you try and track down a Space Channel 5 package that comes with the sampler, or maybe just head on out to your CD shop and pick up the full-length 72 minute Planet Dance CD.
