 500,000 Systems Sold, and Counting!

Sega of America has sold over half a million consoles to date! Click for more details.

September 23, 1999

Today Sega America announced that the Dreamcast has now sold an astounding 514,000 machines after only two weeks at retail! Even after the most successful console launch ever on the 9th of September, Sega continues to break records.

In the official press release issued out earlier this afternoon, comparisons were made in terms of sales to the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. It took over four months for Sony's machine to hit the 500,000 mark, with Nintendo's machine taking two months. Sega went on to state that not even the Apple iMac computer rivaled their latest console's performance, having sold only 278,000 units after six weeks on sale. Similarly, DVD just managed 430,000 units in its first year.

Chris Gilbert of SOA commented on their success, saying, "Consumer demand for Sega Dreamcast is continuing at a record pace. All of our retailers are reporting huge sales for the system and we are working very closely with them to meet the massive demand we are anticipating for the holiday season."

As reported yesterday at IGNDC, four of the top five and seven of the top twenty games in the NPD's multiformat charts are Dreamcast titles, further branding Sega's console as an instant success. Can it get any better? With the Christmas season now upon us, we believe it most definitely can.
