The solution to all our memory problems? Quite possibly.

4 Meg Memory Card For the Dreamcast

This new peripheral has more space, and can connect to a PC for downloading game saves

September 17, 1999

One of the biggest problems with the Dreamcast has so far been the small amount of room in the VMU for saving games. Try to play through a season of NFL2K, for instance, and you're going to fill up your VMU, as the game requires a whopping 192/200 blocks. Thankfully, a third party developer out there seems to have a solution to the problem.

Known as the Dreamdrive, the new device by Ultimate Video Accessories is like a VMU without the screen. It's made exclusively for saving and retrieving game data from the DC, and it can't be used for playing mini games. The sweet part is that the Dreamdrive has four times the memory of the VMU.

There are other features, though. Here's what Ultimate Video Accessories has promised for the product:

  • Connects to IBM-PC or compatible computer
  • Transfer RAM contents to hard drive
  • Send saved games over the internet
  • Receive saved games in Email
  • Transfer saved games from hard drive to the DREAMDRIVE
  • True 4 Meg Memory Card, NO DATA COMPRESSION!
  • Copies and re-formats memory cards
  • You can archive your game saves on the PC hard drive and Email game saves to other gamers.
  • You can download game saves from web sites and newsgroups, or transfer your saved games to other memory cards using your PC.

A slight note regarding the "NO DATA COMPRESSION!" thing. This is an important feature, as previous third party memory cards for the Saturn and PlayStation claiming to feature high memory capability have actually been the same size as the standard memory card, but used compression to store more data. This proved to be problematic, as some games were incompatible with the unit, and the memory card would often be corrupted, meaning you'd loose your data. If the new card by Ultimate Video Accessories promises to feature no compression, it's possible that these problems may be avoided.

The Dreamdrive will be available in October through the Ultimate Video Accessories website at http://www.mp3psx.com/.
