1999 Dreamcast Holiday Buyers' Guide
Our
wish list for 2000. Come on, movers and shakers! Get moving and
shaking!
November 12, 1999
Despite
the massively successful worldwide launch, 1999 proved to be a so-so
year for Sega and the Dreamcast, primarily because of problems
involving software delays, lack of role playing games, and I believe
some people out there were dissatisfied with that whole lack of 'net
play thing in America and Europe. Of course, there's always 2000,
and we've decided to compile a list of things we'd like to see Sega
and its third parties bring our way next year.
BRANDON'S WISH LIST
Chakan in 2000: This game is easily one of the most
exciting concepts I've heard in a while, but will AndNow be able to
bring it all together by the end of next year? Let's hope so.
Anachronox: It's like I told you earlier this year. I
need me some Anachronox. More so than anything else on Dreamcast
next year, I am hoping that Eidos will wise up and give us this
splendid adventure in . . .
Online Play!!!: Come on Sega. Get off your can and give
us what you promised! I want some serious Internet gaming! Starting
with . . .
Quake 3!!!: Oh yeah. If there is any truth to this one
ever being on the table, let's hope the kids can learn to play
nicely together and give us the goods!
A follow-up to Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion: Yes, I
know the Genesis had a sequel, but I want a good one, and I want it
to be authentic (read 2-D). Gimmie!
More Namco: OK, I've though I'd seen women play with my
emotions, but even the most evil of my ex's could learn a thing or
two from Namco. Come on gang, after SC, you can't just quit on us!
ANOOP'S WISH LIST
Ys Book 1 & 2 Dreamcast Remake: My second most
favorite game of all time on the DC? Oh baby! Ys is somewhat
strange in that parts 1 and 2 alone are nothing, but when brought
together as Hudson Soft did back in this classic Turbo Grafx CD
title, they form heaven in a CD.
Panzer Dragoon Saga Dreamcast Remake: My first most
favorite game of all time on the DC? Oh double baby! This, the
greatest game in the history of humanity, and it wasn't given the
attention it deserved, due mostly to the lack of interest in the
Saturn worldwide. This is the true cinematic RPG - never mind what
Square promised of (laugh) Parasite Eve.
Surprise Japanese release of Shenmue before Christmas!:
This doesn't apply to next year, I suppose, but I'd feel a whole lot
better next year about the state of the DC if this puppy were to
come my before this year ended. Actually, I'd settle for being able
to obtain a copy of that "What's Shenmue?" playable demo. Come on,
Sega - I put up a 8000 word preview on the bleedin' game - at least
give me a playable demo so that I can impress the chicks!
Cosmic Fantasy Continues on the Dreamcast: Cosmic Fantasy
2, which came our way via Working Designs, had such a hold on my
then-fifteen year old mind that I actually managed to shed a tear of
sorrow at the end as Van headed off to the stars. With the death of
the Turbo Grafx came the death of any possibility of part III on our
shores. Release this series on the Dreamcast!
Let the Dating Sims Come to America: Damn you! I'm sick
of playing these games in Japanese! Damn you!
MATTHEW'S WISH LIST
Playstation 2 No Good: Sony releases PlayStation 2 in
March with only two games, both of which have been extremely rushed.
Gran Turisimo 2000 is one of them, and fails to impress the Japanese
with shoddy visuals and only a handful of poorly designed courses!
(Ed's Note: Not bloody likely, Matt!)
Shenmue: This all-important title gets released to Japan
in Spring next year, and turns out to be the best game ever created.
(Ed's Note: Very bloody likely, Matt!)
Bizarre Creations and Metropolis: This awesome racing
title is released in Spring, and is dubbed the definitive racing
game on any console to date, beating Sony's and Namco's offerings.
Nights 2: Yuji Naka announces Nights 2 for Christmas
2000. Early screenshots look very promising, and the final version
turns out to be one of the most innovative and enthralling
experiences ever created.
Namco: Annoyed at Sony after messing up the Playstation 2
launch, this key developer decides to back Sega with Tekken, Ridge
Racer and Time Crisis. Plans for an RPG are also announced.
General Entertainment: This mostly unknown Japanese
company decides to release a sequel to their 1998 DC launch title,
Pen Pen. The sequel consists of loads of tracks, as well as internet
play. Yes, it turns out that Anoop isn't the only one around here
who likes riding around Mrs. Cream and Horror Man's wacky courses!
Anoop: The King of dating sims decides to brainwash
Brandon into fruitiness by tying him up in a chair, making him play
Plus Plum, Seventh Cross, Densha De Go 2, Sengoku Turb, July and Pen
Pen. Brandon eventually escapes and ties Anoop up, making him live
his worst nightmare with an hour session of NFLK 2000. Anoop's
conversion is a successful one, as he vows never again to watch
another anime cartoon in Japanese!
JEREMEY'S WISH LIST
Tekken Tag Tournament: Yes, I know. It's for the
PlayStation 2 only. But come on NAMCO, it's Tekken! Personally, I
spend a small fortune in tokens on this baby every week. After the
unbelievable quality that was Soul Calibur, give the masses what
they want and bring us the Triple T!
Shining in the Darkness II: Back in the early days of the
Genesis (and before the excellent series of Shining Force games)
this first-person RPG amazed me each and every single time I played
it. Just imagine the same dynamic play coupled with Disney-like
animation that is capable on DC! Please?
SNK vs. Capcom: After thoroughly enjoying both KOF &
MvsC earlier this year, it left me salivating even more for the
eventual arrival of a clash of the titans! The two masters of 2D
fighting finally coming together and throwing down the gauntlet?
Give it to me now!
Some cool Internet options: Once the online thing hits
it's stride (or for that matter, even starts moving at all) the
chance to take on a Turkish Dreamcast owner in a game of Phantasy
Star is pretty damn appealing. Imagine adding even more levels to
your copy of Sonic Adventure, or perhaps download Heihachi for use
in that game of Soul Calibur! (Hey it could happen, that hair is
razor-sharp!)
