Question

Anyone have any idea of what the size limit for downloading SFD's on the DC is? If I were to guess it would probably be somewhere between 6-7 MB's. But even at that size, if you get it compressed well enough, reduce the screen size and resoloutions, and maybe lower the frame rate, it might be possible to get around 5 minutes of video into that, any other thoughts or ideas about this?

Post Video compression...

That's what we all are working on right now. Cutting down the size. I've done pretty good today with it. I can get a full 2minute wav in the movie down to 500k. Im working with video compression right now to get the size of the actual avi(Before its a sofdec) down. I can get a 2mb avi down to a 800k avi but the image quilaity is not good enough to even watch if it switches backgrounds alot(which is most of the avi/mpeg's i work with). I'm trying to find a middle-point to get it down to a resonable size and resonable quailty. Im testing other compression types right now...

is there a way to create a "dummy" wav? im just making this up, but is there a way to maybe link the video to an audio file that exists on the dreamcast browser itself? maybe looping sound, or just use a wav from the dc system. Before i get flamed to hell, i know nothing on this subject, so i thought id ask anyways. goodluck.

thanks for the info!!
Maybe i worded my question wrong, but what i meant to ask was if anyone knew the maximum file size for a sofdec that the Dreamcast would be able to download.

well when i download some sfd's on my dreamcast it usually says not enough memory blah blah after i downloaded 2 1.4MB files and a 2.5MB SFD which is 5.2MB then once i do those three and finish the 4th file it just says not enough memory so i think the max has to be around 5MB to 6MB(if ur lucky) it shoud be around there.

Vampman, ok, so you know nothing of the subject, that dosent mean you cant bring up new ideas or questions, you just might bring up something that someone had not thought of yet, that could lead to a possible soloution...anyone who would flame someone for that is truly an idiot.
Just my $0.02 on the subject...

I think they said that the dc has 8mb of memory. So if you figure that the various stuff it remembers when you use it (ie. back history) uses mebbe 2 altogether you have about 6 left. So you guys are probably right, 5 or 6 usable.
I'm no expert on the matter either, so don't be jumping all over me about this.

By the way any porn would be appreciated greatly, on account of my being a guy, and needing it to live.

I wish vamp. But the audio has to be encoded in the movie itself . Good idea though.

plus, you need to remember that the cache doesnt clear automatically, so, IF the browser itself loads into ram, and doesnt just stream off of the cd, then, you have that much less space to use. Last night with all of the .sfd downloading, the dc wouldnt even accept a cookie for me to check my email, which is something i do alot.

Okay, the 8MB of memory would be the VSRAM in the video processor. The Dc's SDRAM is 16MB. The various stuff the Dc remembers when you use it ( e.g. histories) would go there. The 2 or 3 MB already in use in the video processor would have to do with video chores for the browser. So I guess the .sfd has to be loaded into the 5 or 6 MB of VSRAM? There wouldn't be any way to free up any of the main SDRAM and load more there, and then swap it with the old data on the fly? Like so that when replay it, it'll actually play a second part.

Ugh. Why did I wince when I asked all that? Sounds tricky. Somehow I get the odd feeling that it'd take a browser rewrite, if it could be done at all.

Guys, don't jump all over me about this, because I am saying ahead of time that I could be wrong about all this. I am just trying to figure it all out.

So, what are the possibilities and why?

Question

Somehow, what I just posted directly above this seems all wrong. Who knows how it all works?

You are correct, the DC uses 8MB Video memory and 16MB SDRAM for system memory. all files will be stored on teh system memory though, not the video memory. Even videos are stored on the syste memory.

the video memory comes into play when something has to be drawn on screen, and for storing textures.

The video itself is streamed from the system memory to the video memory as it is played. It is also decompressed as it is played.
