I think levels 5-8 are classic.. let alone classic Panzer levels. Stuff coming from every which way but all the while retaining a certain style and constant level of intensity.

Yet, I keep thinking back about which levels I can't wait to play through again and I'm at a loss. That is, I can't decide. There are so many brilliant levels here that I know I can work at for weeks to perfect. The first level is cake, yes, but I know I can do better in the second level (I don't have an A yet on a level even in easy) and the beauty of that level doesn't hurt.. but fallen ground, the snow level, the the forbidden memories level, level 8, and the final boss.. they all rock so much.

I'd love to able to play through the whole game in one sitdown so as to absorb all of the game's aesthetics all at once. (Listen to me - I sound like a druggie now sitting in front of a spectrum of illicit chemicals)

Anyone else think that levels 6 and 7 should have been considered one long level? Same goes for 9 and 10.. I know the health bar becomes a serious issue.. but as far as level design goes..

6 and 7 were good seperated. But 9 and 10 should have been one episode. I mean, 9 is basically just a boss battle.

And personally, I'd say that Smilebit is 3 for 3 on the Xbox, with GUNVALKYRIE being their weakest effort but still quite good.

Smilebit is one of the only truly reliable teams at Sega right now.

Exclamation Hard mode is extremely tough!

quote:
I just started playing on Hard mode. Doesn't seem much different from Normal mode, except that the projectiles come at you faster, and some enemies seem stronger (thank god for the HW form) and are a little quicker on the draw. But keep in mind that so far I've only gotten to Episode 3, and I bet the difficulty really picks up on Episode 4, like it had for Normal mode.

Geez... I take this back about Hard level being almost the same as Normal. Along with what I mentioned before, consider your Life Gauge being just halfway filled (sometimes less) from the start of every Episode, and enemy hits takes more damage out of you. And sometimes you'll have to think twice about restarting right at a boss. Episode 4 was tough as hell because of the amount of life I had when I finally got to the boss. I had like a 10% filled Life Gauge starting at the Episode 4 boss, and had to use my GW Beserk Attack as many times as I could just to muster enough energy to make it through both parts (Statue & The Cavalry). Got through it, though. Made it to Episode 7, which is where I currently am now. Man, this mode is no cakewalk by any means.

Hehe.....good idea! :D

Ok, time for some boss strategies and tactics for those in a bind:

HI MY NAME IS LADY K AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE THE SPOILER TAGS TO PREVENT FOLKS FROM SEEING THINGS THEY SHOULDN'T.

:mad -bishoptl

Episode 1 Boss: Assault Carrier Vermana

Start off by using the Heavy Wing and take out the series of missle launchers on top with lockons. Switch over to Glide Wing to take out any missles that approach. When you fly over to the carrier's right side, take out the fuel canisters and sides. Once you're on the right side, take out the ship launch bay in Heavy Wing form. You'll fly under and to the left, so get in some shots on its left and underside. When you're in front, use Heavy Wing shots to take out both front missle launchers, and use the Glide Wing spread shot on any incoming missles. When you fly above to the left, again use HW lock-ons on the fuselage and any remaining parts of the carrier. When the carrier launches the 6 large rocket attack, switch over to BW form and take them out one by one. Continue the assault and the carrier will be grounded in no time. Easy.

Episode 2 Boss: Ikrakav

Get behind this aquatic creature by braking, then using HW lockons at its core behind its shield. After certain damage, it'll rise out of the water and spin to protect its core. Follow it by speeding up then resume HW lockons. When its about to release pink flora spores, brake to evade and position yourself at its side. Speed up again and pelt away at the core. When Ikarakev releases organics, use the BW or GW form and take them out. Keep following its weak point, evading its flora and organics and you'll win.

Episode 3 Boss: Catharp

Accelerate ahead of him and take out its immediate shield with HW lockons to expose his weak point. Target this weak point until he leaps and tries to land on you. Brake to have him sail over you, and accelarate ahead of him (easy with GW) and target his head with HW shots. He'll volley shots and missles at you, so take them out or evade them by positioning yourself at his side. He'll sprint off occassionally and you'll chase him down, so resume this process with HW shots and he'll go down.

Episode 4 Boss: Aerial Laser Defense Unit & Dragonmare Squadron

When you face off the laser defense unit target the center with HW lockons and dish off as much damage as you can for before it gears up for a laser shot or huge sphere attack. Speed up ahead to its side to evade, then swoop back to get in more damage. It'll gear up for a swing so, evade again by going to its side. When it regains its power, fly above and use BW or HW lockons on its series of circular power distribution nodes. When it shoots missles, use GW shots to take them down with ease. Once the nodes are deactivated, swoop back to its front and continue HW lockons at its weakpoint. Observe which attack its going for next and evade. Repeat till its defeat.

Ah, but it ain't over. Square off against the Dragonmare Squadron next. Use BW or HW lockons on all dragons while using GW shots on their fireballs. They'll circle around you, so keep up the attacks. When they go into formation and they fly in front of you with their "tail" attacks, brake to slow down and dodge by using up down patterns. Repeat until Evren's squadron goes down.

Episode 5 Boss: Squid Manta

As you sprint across the bridge, use HW lockons, doing as much damage as possible as it soars beneath and to your sides. Keep an eye on your radar and follow his position. When it launches missles, use GW shots to bring them down. When his energy drops to half, you'll take to the air and continue the assault. When his middle area doesn't absorb any more damage, accelarate to either of his sides, and attack its weapoints on its wings. Be careful since it'll launch shots as you get into position, so get in your hits first. Accelrate ahead of him or drop back to dodge. When it sets up for its huge crystal shard attack, speed up ahead and penetrate through them. Repeat tactics until defeated.

Episode 6 Boss: Archive Defense Unit

Well, this battle comes right off at the beginning of the stage as you follow Abadd to reach the Ancients' library. Use BW and HW lockons as usual at its center, and when it launch blue missles, take them out right away so their explosions do damage to the unit. As you fly through the segmented tubes, it'll rush ahead to clamp onto the next tube in its pursuit. Accelerate ahead to avoid its rush, and prepare for its rapid blue missle attack. Take them out quickly and resume HW shots at its center to destroy it. Thankfully, there's no boss at the end of Episode 6.

Episode 7: Abadd

This battle can get tough as its all about positioning, dodging, and getting in your HW shots. Start off with HW lockons as usual, and when Abadd approaches you on one of your sides, accelerate ahead to avoid. When he volleys shots and lasers, use GW and move around to dodge. Two weakpoints will be exposed (head and chest), so position yourself to his side and aim for the pulsing chest region with HW shots. Drop back and aim for his head with additional HW shots while dodging his attacks in GW form for more maneuverability. When he rises high for further volleys, use GW form. Keep this up, and you'll be the victor.

Episode 8: Cradle Defense System

Another tough battle awaits here. Begin by using HW lockons on its left and right arms, dodging high or low when it swings at you. Try to destroy those before it unleashes its electrical attack. Use up/down dodging maneuvers and just concentrate on evading. Once that's over, focus on its middle tiered section and "legs". Missle attacks are bested in GW form, so keep a sharp eye. Once destroy, its sections will fly up and you'll soar in pursuit. Dogde its laser attacks in GW form and when come to the top, target its middle section again in HW shots. It'll go into a spinning red laser attack, so be ahead of it by accelerating out of its way. Key in mind that you'll need to brake to reposition yourself in optimal position, depending which way it spins. When its parts drop back down, pursue and follow the whole tactic over again until its destroyed.

Episode 9 Boss: Dragonmare Armada

There are a lot more dragonmares this time around, so use similar tactics you used against Dragonmare Squadron. They're more relentless and they'll try to ram you, so keep ahead of them (or drop back) when it gets hectic. Use GW form against their fireball assaults. Follow them around and get in as much HW damage as you can.

Episode 10: Ultimate Abadd

Abadd begins in a protective shell defended by a ring of orbs. Use HW shots (your dragon better be at max level 5!) and focus at its core. You may just opt to absorb the damage from the orbs and just go ballistic, or opt to dodge. Your choice. Once his energy is depleted, Abadd will ride atop his ultimate dragonmare. Concentrate HW shots until he get in front of you, then when he disappears, switch to GW right away and dodge his laser attack. When he reappears, switch over again HW and assault away until you need to use GW form to dodge again. Abadd will then use his dragon's tail to attack you so, slow down and weave to the sides to evade. Get in front and do as much damage before he begins his "lock on" laser attack on you. The technique here is to hit Abadd with your own lockons once he has targeting reticule adjusted to you. Listen for his lock on mark. Time your shots on him so that you'll break his lock on before he gets own shots out at you. If you don't do it right, you'll be hit for sure. After enough damage will disappear and go for a barrage of laser attacks. Use GW form and just dodge all around the screen before he reappears. When he does, he'll go for a ramming attack, disappearing below the clouds. The 3rd time he comes out, accelerate forward to evade. Continue with the HW attacks until his dragon reemerges and goes all out. Not much to say here, just go ballistic with HW lockons and time your attacks to terminate his lock on reticule attack. Pursue and follow, and you'll get the best of him!

Edit: Just noticed my new tag. Yay Sega! :p

I've been using the Glide Wing a lot more than any of the other forms. Been playing on normal, and I started taking advantage of the switching and the different attributes midway through like, level 4. The boss was great. Normal hasn't been too hard yet, but again, I've been using the Glide a lot... it's defense is so much better than all of the others. I think the most difficulty I had was the level 2 boss. Died like three times on the fucker. :-p

EDIT: DAMMIT CALISTA! SPOILERS MAN, SPOILERS.

just picked the game up yesterday. here's my very short impressions if anyone cares:

graphics: wow. best graphics on xbox yet. i'm up to episode 6, and so far, the graphics in each level are as follows (at least for me)

ep1: :)
ep2: :eek
ep3: :\
ep4: :)
ep5: :\
ep6: :)

sound: the music is good, but i wouldn't say its godlike or anything.

gameplay: the three wing forms make combat incredibly fun; instead of a straight shootout, big battles become races to see if you can use the correct form to fight the boss quick enough. fun fun fun.

Finally 100% yippy!!! What a fun ride this has been. Definately one of Sega's best {if not thee best} efforts since going third party. There are few shooters that can match the atmosphere the Panzer Dragoon games provide and I will treasure this game for years to come. I'm really dissappointed that I missed out on Saga. The cinemas provided in Orta made me see just how much more of the past story I missed. Can wait for future versions!!!

Mission 3 is the only mission that have yet to defeat totally{and by god I will}.

???? awaits me along with the ???? Dragon and the ????????? Dragon in the Pandora's Box Game mode.

Here's my current stats:

Nah. The ending is the same for Hard mode as it was for Normal mode. Nothing has changed from what I saw of both endings.

I also went to that last box on Page 3 of the Events menu within Pandora's Box to see if anything would be uncovered after beating Hard mode... but the question mark is still there.

i think the last four episodes pale in comparison to the first six. both gameplaywise and graphically. i was a little disappointed by ultimate abadd...well, actually just his first form. his second was pretty cool, but his third was pretty annoying.

i was disappointed by the final 4/10 of the game, but all in all, fun fun fun.

Are you talking to me? Pretty funny if so... only mentioned Zwei once and it was to say that Orta doesn't have the same magic as Zwei and the original did for me... and that statement was obviously dripping with nostalgia. Hehe, and I'm supposed to keep my opinion to myself? Keep yours to yourself, and please, stop reading message boards, it's definitely not for you. You've already violated the ToS several times over.

Regardless, I just played through levels 6, 7 and 8, and I'm on the level 8 boss. Easily, easily, some of the best levels I've ever played in my entire gaming life. This boss alone is amazing. I want to bump it up to hard though, guess I must have honed my l33t skillz one the older games and Rez. ;)

PDO is just plain and simple better than PDZ and PD, although it has inferior music, nostalgia aside.
i read your recent post also, dont know if your feelings have changed or what.
giving you some sort of magic is a different type of discussion, you would have to be in that state of mind to feel it, and open enough to receive it. PDO does HAVE that sort of magic, this is coming from a big fan of the series.
*spoiler*
personally im on the level 8 boss also, level 6 knocked my socks off, initial route A and route B, both kick ass, specially route A...with the morphing hallway.
level seven rez style worm fight kicked ass too, the level is freaking surreal, i have some shrooms set aside to go with the level later on.

-Q-:

if you're talking about the defense system in the cradle, then this is what i did: use the hw form to deal damage to its midsection...the thing with the reticle. then when you see its arms sort of rear back, dodge down then up. use gw form to destroy all his missiles. when it turns around destroy its arms.

when it goes into its attack form, switch to gw form immediately, then dodge the alternating lazers, up and down. when it gets above you, switch to the gw form and dodge all its shots. it helps to dodge in a sort of circular motion. when it fires the rotating lazers, speed up or slow down accordingly to stay ahead of the beams. just remember to pummel it with hw form's attacks whenever you see an opportunity.

Woo, just beat the game, what a wild ride. Took me at least seven tries to beat that last boss. :-/ Gonna continue playing until I get 100% Pandora's box.

The last five episodes were fantastic. And I will say that, yes, PDO is the best shooter in the series. The final levels were that good. But... it's not my favorite. I didn't come in to bash the game or anything, as frankly, I'm not about fanboy-ish comments or console war politics. Just came into the official topic to express my opinion. Let me also save everyone the suspense, my favorite Sonic, Mario, and Final Fantasy games aren't the ones that are generally considered the best.

In any case, what's the word with the sidequest? I was going to try it out when I was stuck at the last boss but I was afraid I would lose my data. Is it near as good as the main quest?

I just finished the game. Even though it was the longer and more challenging than PD or PDZ, id have to say that I liked PDZ the most. Cure smilebit for not hiring the composer from Zwei. The final boss music and the ending theme were really big let downs. The game didnt go to the music. But, I still thought PDO was awsome.
