Remember the Game Fan incident?

Printed in the September 1995 issue of Die Hard Game Fan, which was ultimately pulled from shelves:

quote:
bonus shit or what I mean what the hell do those guys at Namco smoke anyway. (wish i had some) I think those little jap bastards love to freak, no i take that back i know those little jap bastards love to freak on military Sims and that's cool if your a little jap bastard but I am not.

Here's a scan:

(Haven't seen this in a while, so I thought I'd post it to get people yapping about it and to spread out the scan a bit more... that sort of thing should always be available for historical reference)

Never caught that issue, although I did see them slam many a video game for having rap songs in the soundtrack instead of the 80s butt rock that they wanted. Douches, all of them, but at least it made for interesting reading until all the editors switched.

And the remarkable thing is that it's still better written than your average Gamefan review.

It's pretty obviously filler text (inserted in order to have something to place the design around) that never got replaced with "real" text. I seem to remember Mr. Halverson making odd references to sabotage in the following month's issue instead of giving any sort of apology.

Probably too busy whacking it to Card Captor Sakura or whatever. At least that what he was doing when he was running Gamer's Republic into the ground.

Because I'm not into sports games I didn't know that was printed until the next issue where the apology was made. I was wondering what the hell they were talking about so I looked at the previous issue and saw it! I still have that mag in a box somewhere.

code:
August 18, 1995 GameFan, more so than any other American title covering the gaming industry, has been the greatest proponent of the Japanese market and culture. This is a known fact in the industry and among gamers. We are also the fastest growing gaming magazine on the market, despite the fact that our cover price is 20% higher than that of our competitors. We are thought of by readers of all gaming titles as the magazine with the highest production quality and editorial integrity. For these reasons, we are the constant target of our competitors. Our September issue was the aim of sabotage. The intention was to include language in our issue offensive to the Japanese to damage relationships and set our friends against us. During the production process, text containing various profanities and language offensive to the Japanese culture was woven throughout the text of the issue. We were able to remove the majority of the language. Despite our efforts, one paragraph contained within an editorial made it through the production process. By the time we discovered this, some of the copies were already distributed to retail outlets. Unfortunately, because our production process largely involves digitized information on disk and it travels through the hands of several outside sources, it is subject to this type of manipulation. We were caught with our guard down, never having expected such an outrageous act. We have put safeguards in place to insure that this will never occur again. The action was undoubtedly directed to harm GameFan. We ask that you accept our deepest apologies for any offense that it may have caused. Please consider that the persons responsible for this action intended not only an offense against the Japanese, but against GameFan. This type of motive and behavior should not be condoned. Carefully consider the circumstances and our integrity and help us maintain it by not reacting against GameFan, but together with GameFan. Sincerely, Dave Halverson Editor In Chief, GameFan Magazine
Actually, considering all the stories you hear about gamefan's glory days, I could almost see this being the truth.

As much I hate GameFan and all that it stood for, what happened was really messed up and Halverson and his crew did not deserve such a malicious act.

Nope, it was a "Playstation" cover with various pics airbrushed by their artist (forgot his name..."wolf" or something like that?) representing the hot games of the time.

I bought it at the same store I'm still working at now; it's a small independently-owned game store, so no word ever reached them about it. I walked in, saw the issue, grabbed it, bought it, then showed the guys behind the counter what was inside. :)

It was a trick picture that's been around on the internet forever. It appears to be a bulldozer in a desert pushing a giant tumbleweed or something, but if you look closer you can tell that it's really just a small toy bulldozer, the desert is actually a woman's body, and the tumbleweed is her pubic hair. It's pretty clear GamePro just did a Google image search for "bulldozer" and threw it in the magazine without actually looking at it.

Anyway welcome last....decade

Old news but for those of you who don't know, the article in question was written by none other than Nick Rox(AKA Nick Des Barres). He was joing around and decided to see if it would actually make it past Dave for quality control. It's funny, cuz Nick is one of the very few white guys I know that absolutely WORSHIPS the Japanese

Apparently, this is what happened as told to be by those that were working there.

Late night, not sure if it was Andrew Cockburn, but one of the staffers was getting stoned, decided to put in some 'funny' filler text, and Halverson never caught it.

No one was fired, or repremanded and it took a few years for Namco to fully accept an apology and send out games in a timely manner again.

Cockburn did that.

He took RE2, burned it, allegedly, gave it to a friend.

A few days later the president of Capcom was told about it and actually got a copy of the Disc.

They were able to trace it back to GF and sent the Federal Marshall's in.

Cockburn is also the guy that put LSD in the coffee that lead to Halverson's amusing Cybermorph review.

If one collected the entire history of GameFan in book, it would be the perfect guide on how not to run a game magazine. And it would need appendixes for Gamer's Republic and GameGO!

Yes. If it were still around today, it would be the only magazine I subscribed to. I noticed one thing about the magazine: it had a lot of text. There was just so much to read - a single issue could keep me entertained for over an hour. Wheras GamePro or EGM can be read in about 20 minutes. It was worth the extra dollar per issue.

I remember they changed all of the editors and then the reviews started getting terrible...nothing except shitty obscure Japanese platformers would get over 70 in the mag and the quality of the writing went down. Plus the internet was starting to get big and costs for such a heavily inked magazine were getting too high.

*hugs his issue of GameGO!*

Yes, despite the people that ran it, the absolute debacle that the entire venture became, and the pretentious underpinnings upon which it was even created....

its got to be extremely rare. The only problem is that the binding sucked and pages can fall out pretty easily.

The content itself wasn't actually that bad, though. It did focus on a lot of things that most other gaming mags never even think to cover. I can't say I didn't learn something.

Ol' mulletman still owes me half a years worth of Gamer's Republic. I liked Gamefan and GR though, always entertaining and often infuriating reads. They were like the GAF in print form. :) Which reminds me, Halverson implyed that Nick Rox would be joining the Play staff a while back, but as of yet nothing has come of it. I wonder what happened?

That apology is totally retarded. So, after the magazine had already been released as "digitized information on a disk" into the hands of "several outside sources" in their production process, someone inserts offensive material... but they were still able to discover the sabotage and "remove the majority of the language"? And despite apparently knowing that someone had inserted this language and removing most of it they were still "caught with our guard down, never having expected such an outrageous act"? And yet they STILL didn't spot the offending text?

Mind you, it's not terribly surprising that GameFan couldn't even muster up a logical or decent apology.

You can thank their apparent lack of editors for that. Their previews, always boiled down to: "Trust us, this game is gonna rock! It will rock! It will! It really will!!! You've forgotten that classic IGN Reader's Review mag, which lasted a whopping two issues. Never seen a lamer idea for a mag in my life...at least Gamefan in it's prime was worth the cash I plunked down for it (probably says more about the other mags though...and they're not any better).

Where the heck did Andrew Cockburn go? And wasn't he the Other Stuff writer, with the Japanese wife? Seems like he had a good ole' time fucking Gamefan up.

Btw, fuck Nick Rox...pretentious little snit. Though at least he gave Sega Rally a good review.

Yes, I HATED that shit. They'd go on about a game for months like it was going to revolutionize gaming and then give it a 60< when it came out.

Plus they were always hyping up these shitty looking import platformers all the time...I mean, Hermie Hopperhead? Who the fuck thought that was worth talking about for two years?

Edit: And do any of you remember GameGO? It was basically a follow up mag to Gamefan once that title folded...all they ever did was review shooters and gush over nime meant for small girls. I don't think it lasted for more than 3 issues.

Yeah, around the time Halverson was jizzing all over Hopperhead was about when I gave up the mag completely, but that game was always in the back of my mind. I ended up playing that game many years later, and Jesus Christ is it even bad. And I love, no matter how lame the premise might be.

Remember, Halverson is the man who said (and I will NEVER stop saying this) "Knuckles Chaotix is the best 32 Bit game ever."

^ old GameFan reunion thread from many moons ago. Hits all the points people have been mentioning here. Star studded.

Thanks for the link. Reading that proves only one thing: the people behind GameFan will always avoid the truth, magazine or not.

EDIT: Wow, after reading through the entire thread, I now realize what an arrogant asshole this Cockburn guy really is.

I love how border pointed out the unnecessary Next Genration bashing and not only did Cockburn fail to address any of his points, but then proceeds to drag God into the argument for absolutely no reason (then again, its not surprising since most religious types always have to hide behind the absolute will of God to reinforce their flawed arguments).

I could go on, but I'll end with just this...

Does he own us like he owned the gamefan staffers when he took out all his salary and left only enough for a few to get paid every 2 weeks causing a twice monthy race to the bank to get funds or own us like he did when he sold used cars?

You know, as broken as this incident was at the time -- I must admit that my own experience with the production of gaming mags has made me able to see how something like this can sneak past a managing editor and production staff, even if down the line that includes a copy editor and a few other quality assurance related folks.

Nonsense paragraphs, bizarre typos, missing or improper images, headlines that don't fit the text, etc. -- a lot of this stuff happens to every publication eventually, mainly because the people involved get so used to what the magazine should look like that something won't catch their eye unless it totally assaults the layout. Look at the layout of that Game Fan article and imagine how easy it would be for someone used to seeing blocks of text set like that, in that font, in that color scheme, would just ignore it entirely. "Oh look, the sports section... I haven't read this in months and I'm not about to start." Then the magazine comes out and proclaims jap bastards love to freak and that Namco are on some good drugs. Hey, the screenshots had a football game in it!

Dave's real failure, at least for that one incident, was to write up an apology that totally didn't have the tone of a publication that was striving for quality or remorseful of their slipup. Kobe Bryant gave his wife a 4 million dollar ring. Dave gave the readership the equivalent of a toy ring from a 25c capsule machine. Perhaps a more sympathetic letter would have allowed everyone to accept the incident as an unfortunate mishap and simply remember it for the comedy value. But really, it was the beginning of the end for that mag....

Of course, I've heard from a few ex-Game Fan / Game Go / Gamer's Republic people in the past, and Dave's other slipups are the stuff of legend too. When you hear how he'd stiff employees, take credit for their work, or totally rewrite their work, you get the impression that maybe he's the kind of guy that could proclaim about the freaking of jap bastards or spend a month cuddling up to Card Captor Sakura in lieu of working. The chain of events that led to Eidos taking control of the company hurt my brain to think about.

Surprise, surprise, his latest endeavor, Play, honestly seems like a decent magazine... it hasn't sparked an incident, sent off disgruntled staff or freelancers, or proclaimed every single game from Japan an 88% must have.

(Aside -- say what you will about GameFan's writing; it had a ton of screenshots for the time and their coverage of imports / quirky games was far and above EGM and GamePro at the time. I absolutely loved GameFan up until the point the other mags caught up to their ideas... which was right around the time the Saturn launched, if I recall. And I have to admit wanting to stab Nick Rox for his "purple shadows" rant about Street Fighter Alpha... I got over that sometime in 2000 I think. Hahaha.)

I remember that odd article, but it went over my head about how much controversy it would stir up. Gamefan, now that was great magazine, that was great for 16 bit and the run up to 32bit, but started to decline shortly after the US launches of the Saturn and PSX. I still think such a magazine can still work in this internet, as the sheer amount of information and pictures per issue was astounding.
