Press release here

Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that it
would modify the original launch plans so that the market is
supplied with a continuous flow of product during the holiday
selling season. For its North American debut on October 26,
2000, the company plans to ship 500,000 units of the
PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, followed
by shipments of approximately 100,000 units per week through
the holiday season.
Since it was previously announced that there were 1 million
pre-sales for launch day...can you say "riots"?

Hmmm... I don't get it... Why don't they just ship out all they have
and sell them all out? I mean... It's going to sell out one way or
another... Why not just make everyone who preordered happy?

end of the holiday season.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
100,000 a week till Xmas?! Looks like Sony is spreading out the
allocation they have. This may put a cramp into my ebay selling
plans.

My emphasis.
Anyone else willing to bet that 'through the holiday season'
doesn't mean from the week after launch through to the end of the
year?

Oct. 26 is going to be an entertaining day. This actually will give
the PS2 more press by the mass media on launch day than it would
have gotten otherwise.
It will be free advertising for Sony. They are marketing
geniuses

If you say so. I guess the decision to ship only 500,000 units
for launch is a result of that genius as well...
BTW, 1.4 million units for the entire holiday season sounds
pitifully low. I mean even the DC managed to sell 1.5 million units
for the holidays last year. There's gonna be riots in the streets.

100,000 domestic or worldwide? You still have to contend with the
European launch.

Exactly. It'll remain in the press through the holiday season,
easily detracting attention away from other console specific news.
Great strategy. The Ps2 will sell like hotcakes this generation
either way so Sony will be happy. I'm not buying one til next year
however so it shouldn't be a problem finding one then.

Ok, now that that's out of my system, I don't think I'll be able
to get my hands on a PS2 until January now. Ugh, what a freakin'
burn that is. I've been counting on them hitting the 1M mark so I
could waltz into a Target early in the morning and grab a system
easily. This throws a wrench in the works for me. I HATE having to
rush to pick up anything, so I'm not gonna go out at launch. Ugh,
this has shades of Tickle Me Elmo all over it.
Where the hell are the units? Are they still pumping systems
heavily into Japan? Sales have gotten down to reasonable levels over
there now, so there's really no need anymore. What about Europe? If
the US is having problems, I don't know what Europe can really
expect.
Looks like my trip back to school shouldn't be a problem anymore.
I'll just put all my money into kegs and fast women. Who needs video
games when you've got fast women, right? PEACE.

Actually Opa , I think that 500,000 on launch day is where
the genius comes into play.
Let me explain myself. The media will pick up on this widespread
shortage on the nightly news...and will people be able to buy the
system?....of course not.
But, here's the kicker...so many people will be hunting for the
system before the holidays that it will definitely be the "hot item"
and even people who would not have bought the PS2 will feel like
they need it.
These people will end up buying one after the holidays when
supply increases.
The extra media attention may sound bad
for Sony, but in all actuality, it is a good thing b/c it is free
MASS MEDIA press for the PS2 from Oct 26 through the new year.
Anyway, just think back to the hype at the N64 launch...and
you'll remember it was driven by the news....and not payed ads...

I don't care what numbers are being tossed around if you have
already pre-ordered a PSX2 you will get one on October 26th. Sony
isn't dumb enough to do otherwise. Mark my words now because I will
be saying "I told you so!" to everyone on that day.

Didn't Funcoland said Sony was only gonna make 700,000 units? Now
either that was BS or something is wrong here.
