I mean, I'm expecting to see a PS2 ad on TV every 5 mins, and every banner on the internet should be for PS2. Instead I see absolutely nothing.

It almost seems like Sony is trying to keep the launch a big secret, since they know they can't meet the demand.

Well, one thing that might make sense would be if the ads start tomorrow, when Sony unveil their own games. Any later than that, and it seems like a surprising (and possibly quite arrogant) move.

Since the demand is supposedly impossible to supply to already I doubt they would need to advertise to such extremes as holding every banner ad and every commerical spot....

I'd be damned if they can supply the preorders alone not to mention the casual gamers, the lil johnnys at christmas, the psycho old people who won't give up gaming, and the dvd obsessionists who just must have a dvd player w/ a blue led not to mention it stands vertically. wooo!

I was in the Sony store the other day and they had a DVD player that had a blue LED, looked pretty cool and i'm thinking of buying it for a DVD player...Guess Sony learnt something from the brisk PS2 sales

Maybe Sony wants a shortage...
...when demand > supply, there's lots of panic and hysteria = great publicity and media coverage. Nintendo proved that.

If that happens, they don't really need strong advertising, just enough to let people know that "it's here".

I find it funny that there is zero PS2 advertising on TV as well. I remember earlier this year, people were going on and on about how the airwaves would be flooded with Sony's PS2 Ad campaign.

But frankly, the Dreamcast's pre-launch advertising was much better. They had teaser Ads as early as June/July before their September launch. The actual Ads weren't great, but at least they flashed the "9.9.99" launch date in every commercial.

I know the typical excuse right now for the PS2 is that Sony is worried about shortages, therefore they don't want to advertise. Though IMO, that seems a little far fetched to be the entire reason. Nintendo was "supposedly" worried about shortages with the N64, but that didn't stop them from advertising.

Sony still doesn't have any PS2 print Ads in this months gaming magazines! It's mostly third parties advertising their PS2 titles.

Right now, most of my friends who are casual gamers, don't even know what the launch date is for the PS2. The few that do know, found out by going to EB.

I seriously don't understand Sony's strategy. If they think they won this generation by default, then they're in for a rude awakening.

Well, sony has a big tri-fold ad in the newest EGM. It wasn't exactly striking, but it was there.

if I hadn't found out about toys r us one day preorder, I would be worried about too much advertising. thAT would have meant more people waiting in front the target i planned on, but now I don't care

You're not the real opa! opa said that the "shortages" were fake PR to get Sony attention! Don't make me email Terminator and have him look it up!

Well, I guess if the PS2 sells very well without much advertising, it proves that people are Sony sheep and only buy the name brand.

Of course if they ran lots of ads and it sold well, it would prove that people are mindless drones controlled by advertising money.

In all honesty they don't need it, it would be more than foolish to think that all the domestic PS2 won't sellout in worse case scenario by the end of the week.

Also they have been showing the Madden ad which serves as advertising.

You will probably see some towards the mid of Oct. and later probably detailing post-launch titles.

Well stores are advertising it, but does SONY even need to? Everyone knows about the friggin PS2, my teacher was talking about it today and how his son made him pre-order one for him because all his friends are too. Why advertise something that the media and word of mouth will do for you for free? Save up thoe bucks and use it during November shopping days to advertise the PS2 when the new shipments come in. I think you'll see some game ads soon though.

The shortage excuse is dumb. Youd think sony would want people to now the thing is out there. Just beacause the can't get it now dosnt mean they wont get it later.

Quite frankly, PS2 dosen't need advertisment.

Who dosen't know what PS2 is by now? It's been on news shows, talked about on Comedy Central, on magazine covers constantly, etc, etc

It's advertisment is that it's simply the next Playstation.

Yeah, kind of reminds me of how they didn't even need to advertise SW:TPM. The media hype itself was more than enough. They must have saved tens of millions on ad fees.

This is from EBworld about ths PS2. They sent this to me without any request.

quote:
Dear EBWorld.com customer,

The PlayStation 2 launch is fast approaching and we have some very
important information regarding your order. Since you ordered your PS2
before the July 9th cutoff, you can expect your PS2 order to arrive at your
door with the initial launch shipment. For most of you, this means you will
receive your package on October 26. If your delivery address is a P.O. Box
or outside of the U.S., your package will be sent via U.S. Priority Mail or
other method, and you can click here
to see estimated
delivery times.

So in anticipation of the PS2 launch day, we have come up with a few
excuses to explain your absence from work.

* I had a bad case of the Japanese flu
*
* I thought it was Saturday
*
* I had to stay home and play video games

Please note that it's not just the PS2 that's selling like crazy.
Games and accessories may be in very short supply at release as well. There
are over 20 games currently scheduled for release at launch and more are
being added. Do you have all the games you need?

We know for a fact that many of you haven't ordered memory cards and
extra controllers with your PS2. Memory cards are essential for saving game
data, and how do you expect to kick everyone's butt in Street Fighter EX3 if
you've only got one controller?

Follow this link to our PS2 page
to make
sure you have all of the games and accessories you need on the big day.

Finally, here are a few situations that may cause delay or even
cancellation of your order. Please take a moment and follow this link to the
order status page and
verify the following information:

1) Credit Card expiration date is accurate and does not expire
before 10/26/2000.
2) The billing address is identical to your credit card billing
address.
3) The shipping address is accurate and complete.
4) The credit limit is high enough to allow for your purchase.

We don't charge or authorize your card until just prior to shipment,
so we won't know about these issues until very late in the process. Help us
out by verifying the above items so we can get your order to you on the
26th. If changes or additions to your order are necessary, please give us a
call at 1-877-4EBWORLD (432-9675) or e-mail your changes to help@EBWorld.com.

Thanks again for ordering from EBWorld.com, and we hope you enjoy
your day off on October 26!

I agree, Sony doesn't need to advertise. The first shipment is as good as sold.

It just strikes me as strange that Sony would conserve their advertise budget this way. This is something you'd expect from Sega. I thought at least Sony would push the Oct. 26th date on TV some.

I guess I'm wondering if this is an arrogant move by Sony or they're simply trying to conserve their Ad budget.

Though, as long as they advertise after the system launches, it won't matter either way.

well....in my little local babbages, there are over 300 people on reserve for a PS2. I'd say that a good number of people have heared about it.

Oh, and I'm in the top 10 to get one.

PAID IT OFF TODAY.

oh, got a DC keyboard too. Couldn't find one till today.

I don't think Sony needs to spend a lot of money advertising PS2 all over the place, because everybody already knows about it. Isn't Sony going to have a tough time meeting the demand as it is?

Sony dosen't need to advertise the system itself that much seeing as it's a sure thing that it will be bought. It's the games that need air time.
